To take up two parking spaces?

Over the past 6 months i have noticed scuff marks (the kind you get when someone has opened their car door too wide and hit my door) today i noticed a dent and massive white scuff on my left passenger door. No note was left behind and because i can't prove when it happened the police aren't doing anything about it (took my details, checked my insurance policy then left) I always make sure i don't park too close to neighbouring cars and when i have dd with me i use parent and child parking. I also always make sure i keep a hand on my door (if the weather is especially windy) so i don't hit anyones car but i am getting so fed up with spending money on repairs and taking my time with t cut to get the scuff marks out. Im on a low income so can't afford to keep spending money on repairs when it could be avoided. I know i will probably come across as a massive idiot but if i find two spaces that are quite some way away from the shop entrance (as no one really parks there or go to the shop when its quiet) then it should be ok? It's very upsetting when you spend money on something nice and then someone damages your property and doesn't even apologise.

If you park far away from everyone where no other cars want to be why would you need 2 spaces? Just park in one as usual, if it's as undesirable a spot as you think no one will park next to you anyway.

Parking in 2 spaces is a bloody ridiculous idea

I'm disabled and have a blue badge etc so always park in spaces that are wide. My car has loads of small dents and a scuff on the rear wing. Have no idea how it happens as I'm not parked near anyone!
I feel your pain op xx

Half my bumper was hanging off when I came out of a supermarket around a month ago. 2008 car but I'd kept it in fairly good condition. It went back on with few good pushes, but obvious crack near middle. I'd parked at the back of small carpark and the person driving must have had major impairments to not notice my car or to have seen what they'd done. It's really Angry particularly as DCs saw it and were upset.

I wouldn't take 2 spaces in a car park. I would expect to come out and get some sort of warning / ticket.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es its hire purchase i don't technically own the car until i've made all the payments. You can take it over how ever many months you want but the payments will be higher if you took it over 12 months than if you took it over 5 years iyswim? Leasing a car is different. My friend does that and they give the car back after 3 years and get a new car, i think the dealership covers any repairs needed but i don't think they 'own' the car.

I deliberately park near cars with no child seats in or at least near cars which are parked well. Or I park further away and walk. I worked in Tesco when I was at uni and my poor old car got really battered from door dings :(

That's what I was thinking of, when you have to give the car back at the end of the term, rather than keeping it. Either way, if you want your car to look nice , I agree it's annoying when this keeps happening. There was a spate of vandalism near us the other night and when I went out to check my bar I noticed just how many dings and marks there were on it. Plus the scuff marks where someone reversed into it and then denied all knowledge.

Slightly off topic but I really don't think minor scratches will affect the price you're given for the car when you trade it in.

My previous car was 2 years old and had quite a few scrapes (all not my fault but lived on a narrow street). When i traded it in the salesman valued it by looking out of the window! They're mostly interested in the mileage and age and will have a sheet with set prices they give you according to this.

I think you just have to accept that getting scraped in car parks is part of driving around. If everyone took your approach and parked in two spaces it would really be a problem...

I once agreed a trade-in price for my car with a garage, and on the day I was due to take it in the exhaust went, I was expecting them to reduce the price offered by an amount to cover the cost, but they said it didn't make any difference to them. It was a lot older than 5 years though.

They will iron out any dents and fix scratches etc dirt cheap before they sell the car on; little marks won't bother them.

Don't take up 2 spaces. I really judge people who can't park properly.

I love my car, I am always polishing and taking the alloys off and cleaning them ect and I get that a car is a pride and joy to some people. However dh scuffed the alloys and it's going to take a day for them all to be refurbished as it will look crap just doing the one and tbh we haven't got the funds or time to get it done. So it will just stay like that.

If it's quite some way from shop door then odds are high no one else would park there, anyway. No need to also take 2 spaces.

I had a crazy friend who would park askew across 2 spaces. That really was the first thing that should have made me realise how nuts she was.

If the car park isn't busy enough for people to mind that you're parking over 2 spaces then surely you can find somewhere where you'll probably end up with a space either side anyway.

I'm sorry but yabu.

Everybody's car is important to them whether it is worth £500 or £50,000 and nobody wants dings and scuffs on their doors. What makes your car so special? What if everybody decided they were going to park across two spaces? When I see a car parked across two spaces it drives me mad because it's like that person is saying 'I'm a douche who thinks that my car is worth so much more than yours'.

Also I think you risk getting a fine in a lot of places.

Don't think it's a police matter as no one was injured and it being on private land I assume due to signage rather than a council car park. Extremely rude to take up 2 spaces. Every car is precious. What sort of car is it ? Is it ridiculously particularly wide?

I love our new Sainsbury's car park markings. Each space divided by double lines on each side ensuring everyone parks in the middle. Tis fab 😊

If you do park in two bays you must buy two tickets or you will get a fine!

We call these trolley badges! If you get a ring at a supermarket !
80% of the time I parking a wide disabled space as I have DS with me who has a blue badge and I still get trolley badges!
It's just people at supermarkets who CBA.
You are being very OTT and you've probably spent more repairing the car that it's resale value !

I think my cars worth more than £60 😂 and no i don't own a smart car. I only reported it to the police so they could view the cctv and then we could do the appropriate thing.

What did you expect them to do about it? You car was slightly damaged by unknown people in unknown cars in unknown places at an unknown time....

Just park in be f the furthest away space (in one space) someone will only park next to you if it is the last space so unfair to park in two spaces.

I drive a huge car and there aren't many parent and child spaces so I just park at the far away spaces, always lots of room.

How do you keep a hand on the door, unclip a child and lift them out? I sometimes rest my jacket between the two cars if the door is going to touch but if the other car is really dirty I just place it very carefully.

Report
Amy214 · 14/08/2016 11:07

HeddaLettuce its not slightly damaged. Its a huge dent and is very noticeable. There is cctv all over that car park they are going to view it to see if the persons details are on it so that we can do what is right.

Lucked its not that hard. My dds harness can be unclipped with one hand, she can take her own arms out and i can lift her out with one arm/hand.

I'm questioning whether many people here have never tried parking away from other cars. You go as far from the entrance as possible into the emptiest part of the car park and you will ALWAYS get some arsehole who decides to park tightly right next to you, making it impossible to get in, never mind put your baby in their car seat. I park in 2 spaces now for that very reason.

Sorry if that annoys people but I'm fed up of making such an effort to be able to get my child in and out only to have some idiot park inconsiderately. Always plenty of other spaces. Also have recently become a victim of those shitty people who don't seem to look when they are opening car doors. Hope Mercedes accept the dent as wear and tear when I return the car in 2 years.
