When people say their dog is fine and won't bite?

Walking down the narrow road with my ds and hear a dog heavy breathing behind me. So I turn and tell the owner she can go infront. Her reply "it's ok he won't bite he's soft as anything" and stays behind us. With ds I couldn't walk fast so decided to cross the road when I didn't need to. Was this rude of her not to walk infront as she could see we were uncomfortable with a dog right behind us? I'd rather be the judge of weather or not I want the dog by us.

Its ok op, this os an open forum to, y'know, discuss stuff. If threads had to pass a trivially test this site would be half empty Grin

Costacoffeeplease · 13/08/2016 10:14

Once again, in plain English, this dog wasn't slobbering, sniffing, jumping up, biting, snarling.... It was walking, on a lead, and.... Breathing Shock. How very dare it!

Freezer, I completely understand your DD's worry about dogs. I think that dog owners should keep their dogs on a lead and controlled as the owner was in this case but it is also the responsibility of the person who has the fear to stay away from the dog as well.

The OP asked the woman to go in front, she said no so she crossed the road. That's it. No one was BU until the OP got all wound up about the words a dog owner said. Hmm

limitedperiodonly · 13/08/2016 10:16

I'd never let a worm owner go in front of me. It would take all day.

Costacoffeeplease · 13/08/2016 10:17

You know, we often see posts on here that 'dogs must always be on leads' this one was, but it's still not good enough for the hysterics - what next? Carry them around? Walk them in a hermetically sealed box?

limitedperiodonly · 13/08/2016 10:20

Person, dog, sabre-toothed tiger, worm, whatever: if you want to be be behind what/who-ever's behind you, it's fine to suggest they go ahead.

I think worms probably go faster than snails, so my worst case scenario would be being stuck behind someone walking a snail. Especially an unmuzzled one not on a lead

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 13/08/2016 10:24

No, people said there is nothing wrong with saying its friendly, not "it won't bite"

These are two distinctly different things.

No one called troll, drip feeding, yes, troll no.
Slightly hysterical, maybe.

SoupDragon · 13/08/2016 10:25

Why are people so stupid?

And that goes for non dog owners/lovers too.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 13/08/2016 10:28

Idefix I'm not surprised you have small dogs.

Actually I think if you need to take your dog on a lead regularly you probably shouldn't have a dog. They belong on farms and places where they can run about freely, not cities

I loved those books.

Must dig them out, I keep my old German editions somewhere.

TellMeSomethingNew · 13/08/2016 10:53

OP it's clear you have no experience with animals or being able to read animal body language, so YANBU to be scared.

But YABU to assume all dogs are aggressive and pass your fear onto your kid. The fact that the dog was big and pulling on the lead has NOTHING to do with whether or not it's aggressive.

marshamella · 13/08/2016 11:08

Costa I apologise for not giving you recognition for following me all morning too. I give up defending my post

Thank you - nice to have my contributions recognised Smile

Costa, it's nice to be recognised for our efforts, isn't it?

I'm thinking of changing my NN to "BeingATwatItsABeingATwatItsABingThingThing"... What do you think? I think it rolls of the tongue quite nicely.

Narrow road, dog walking right behind, DS is scared.

So, pick up scared DS, let the dog and its owner pass by, replace DS on floor, then walk behind the dog. Everyone goes on their merry way.

Kind of simple, really.
