What telltale signs make you suspect 'troll'?

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating troll hunting but what makes you suspect a thread is the work of a bridge dweller and makes you give it a wide berth and/or report to MNHQ? I was thinking quite often the post just seems a little off or implausible and I've tried to think what often arouses my suspicions.

A few things that set my spidey senses tingling are:

  1. The tone is at odds with the material/dilemma or shifts dramatically across the thread.

  2. Events move too quickly and the revelations come thick and fast.

  3. A 'twist' in the last few lines of the post (to make up an example a long post asking for advice on 5* hotels in the Maldives and in the last line saying something along the lines of 'I can only go the last week of August as I 3rd September is my signing on day at the dole.')

  4. Anything to do with a well known sexual fetish (pissing/shitting/bukkake) I'm a bit suspicious about.

This isn't about any particular thread or poster and one of those things on its own isn't enough to set alarms ringing in my head, but what makes other posters start scratching their chin and think 'hmmmm chinny reckon'?

Promising updates to keep the overly-invested hooked.

Only replying to a select few questions and ignoring the rest.

I think on MN there are people who set out to troll and then there are people like the Liftzilla poster who have a real problem, get loads of attention, and then start to exaggerate and feed the overly-invested. Maybe they like the attention or maybe they feel bad to disappoint.

Actually, the overly-invested bother me more than the trolls. Especially when they start demanding updates as if they have a right to them.

I don't report very often because it's hard to be sure, but when someone seems to have had a hundred and one awful things happen to them in their life, it sets off alarm bells.

WhatamessIgotinto · 12/08/2016 18:07

Is anyone else wondering how to actually pronounce bukkake?

Is it buck - ache or buck - a - kay? I don't feel I can ask a real person ...

So no chucking your cash at strangers unless you're happy to chance it being a scam, no weeping and wailing at your keyboard over someone's sob story, just dont get that involved. And if you choose to, do it knowing you might be engaging with a troll and take responsibility for your choice.

Good point, I'd not thought about it befire, but there's a subset of posters who seem to 'need' these dramatic threads that the trolls offer up and they are almost in a symbiotic relationship that gives the trolls the attention they crave and those overly invested in them a chance to rubberneck/'save' the troll op or to demonstrate how empathetic they are by emphasise they have been up all night sobbing (never mere crying) all night about the troll op's plight.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck.

If it sounds far fetched and attention seeking...

neonrainbow · 12/08/2016 19:01

A group of men ejaculating on someone, usually a woman. For those who are at work.

SaucyJack · 12/08/2016 19:07

Funky coloured hair and a pencil up the arse.
_

I reckon it's byoo cack key. Dunno why.

People who post about naughty kids then drip feed about SN once everyone has called them brats.

Onlytimewilltell · 12/08/2016 19:29

It's bew (rhymes with phew!) car key
I think!

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 12/08/2016 19:34

Googled bukkake

Destinysdaughter · 12/08/2016 19:43

Think it's boo car key isn't it?

( guess it's not the kind of word you hear spoken out loud too often...)

Think this thread needs to be renamed, ' what actually IS bukkake..?'
😀

moonmeat · 12/08/2016 19:44

Do not google Bukkake Envy

Destinysdaughter · 12/08/2016 19:46

And whilst we're at it, 'felching' and
'figging' are also words you shouldn't Google whilst at work...

notamummy10 · 12/08/2016 19:56

Trolls can write threads about absolutely anything to get the attention: from believable stories that draws people in to stories that make you go 'Hmm'

All trolls are wanting is attention! It doesn't matter how they go about it, the minute a poster types something or uses the biscuit emoji 'Biscuit' the trap is set!

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 12/08/2016 20:00

Blue waffle is worse. May have googled that at work.

Trolls: I suspect one at the moment on a thread. My troll torch never seems to shine in the right direction though

Champagneformyrealfriends · 12/08/2016 20:07

Wonder if we suspect the same one peppa...

LondonStill83 · 12/08/2016 20:08

Blue waffle isn't a real thing though- just for those who do google it! I work in sexual health and THAT was a fun time, when all the kids thought they would have sex and end up with blue waffle... Though it did make my job a bit easier :-).

Bukkake is when a group of men sank in a circle around a woman and cum in turns on her, usually on her face. Sometimes it involves blow jobs. V common porn scenario. It's pronounced: boo-kha-kee

I wish I didn't know half of the stuff I know...

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 12/08/2016 20:11

I know it's not real but the picture I saw of it was pretty grim still.
I'm trying to think of the many other things I have googled which I probably shouldn't have. I can't believe people thought they would get it. Did it keep them away from sex London?

Bukkake is similar to soggy biscuit!

LondonStill83 · 12/08/2016 20:13

I would like to think so, but really, probably not :-).

May have made them use condoms though?

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 12/08/2016 20:14

champagne only if your troll torch is as rubbish at mine.
One troll one I commented on today only had a big standard comment from HQ as the deletion message
