What telltale signs make you suspect 'troll'?

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 12/08/2016 13:57

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating troll hunting but what makes you suspect a thread is the work of a bridge dweller and makes you give it a wide berth and/or report to MNHQ? I was thinking quite often the post just seems a little off or implausible and I've tried to think what often arouses my suspicions.

A few things that set my spidey senses tingling are:

  1. The tone is at odds with the material/dilemma or shifts dramatically across the thread.

  2. Events move too quickly and the revelations come thick and fast.

  3. A 'twist' in the last few lines of the post (to make up an example a long post asking for advice on 5* hotels in the Maldives and in the last line saying something along the lines of 'I can only go the last week of August as I 3rd September is my signing on day at the dole.')

  4. Anything to do with a well known sexual fetish (pissing/shitting/bukkake) I'm a bit suspicious about.

This isn't about any particular thread or poster and one of those things on its own isn't enough to set alarms ringing in my head, but what makes other posters start scratching their chin and think 'hmmmm chinny reckon'?

Virginia Andrews just started a thread on here, I reckon.

neonrainbow · 12/08/2016 16:03

I don't think there's anything wrong with asking people how they identify a troll. There's plenty of troll hunters on mn so surely they'd like to share their insight?

ilovesooty · 12/08/2016 16:08

Why would they share their insight? If you suspect trolling just report. Why give them attention and promote conversation about them?

RosieThorn · 12/08/2016 16:08
Sparklingbrook · 12/08/2016 16:09

When you have been on MN a while they are pretty easy to spot TBF.

There's no 'hunting' to be done really. It's not like they are hidden. Confused

AppleJac · 12/08/2016 16:12

In mumsnet world a troll is someone whos opinion you dont agree with.

I ve been called a troll on here many times. Im not a troll i just have a different opinion to the person calling me it

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 12/08/2016 16:13

First post
Clickbait material
Salacious detail
Cliffhangers
Plots from films

But half the time I don't care, if someone is that needy/lonely for attention I will happily provide it. Just don't fuck with the vulnerable, that's all.

WorraLiberty · 12/08/2016 16:24

I don't care either to be honest (unless they're fucking with the bereaved or vulnerable), it's just part of being on an internet forum really.

Especially one that encourages name changing.

I reported a thread last night because I don't believe it to be true, even though I don't believe the OP could be described as an actual troll really - just attention seeky.

But I don't see how HQ could prove it either way, so no doubt it'll stay and I'll just watch with bemused interest Grin

BagPusscatnip · 12/08/2016 16:29

Do not Google Bukakke at work!!

KateSMumsnet · 12/08/2016 16:47

Hey guys,

Just popping on to say (forgive us for being a broken record) but if you do suspect a poster is trolling, best thing to do is report it to us.

It's also worth bearing in mind that this thread might be exactly the sort of thing a potential troll might like reading...

SoTheySentMeA · 12/08/2016 16:55

If it's in the relationships topic I sometimes think troll if it seems too implausible (and AnyFucker hasn't touched the thread)

neonrainbow · 12/08/2016 17:18

Maybe if there were more threads like this less people would troll hunt on threads. I hate troll hunters more than trolls.

Sparklingbrook · 12/08/2016 17:34

Trolls will always be worse than troll hunters IMO.
The troll hunters spotters should just report and hide the thread though.

very Grin I haven't seen them for a while. I miss those manky pumps!

Allalonenow · 12/08/2016 17:41

This thread will be a masterclass for potential trolls! Hmm

This thread will be a masterclass for potential trolls

Hardly.

Given 90% of the posts are 'what's bukkake?' followed by 'don't Google bukkake at work!' then followed by 'Uggh I wish I hadn't googled bukkake'

It has become rather more bukkake-centric than I could have ever imagined

OP posts:
PurpleTango · 12/08/2016 17:54

How the hell did I reach the grand old age of 44 without ever hearing the word Bukkake?? Thanks for that OP :D As for what makes a troll? Usually you can spot them from first post, think to yourself "Mmmm.... Lets see how this pans out", sit back with a glass of whatever and watch the OP dig their own grave. Tis fun :D
