To think beach volleyball is just an excuse for folk to perv at athletes in skimpy gear

I don't understand why it is even a distinct sport from normal volleyball. Surely it came about just because some folk were playing it on a beach? Why not then have beach gymnastics, or beach football or beach archery?

The men seem to keep sand out of their bits whilst wearing shorts and T-shirts, so it's very difficult indeed to understand why women can't do the same.

On another topic, what's with the crystals and rhinestones on gymnastics leotards? Don't they end up getting shed all over the arena? It would be incredibly uncomfortable jumping onto a Swarowski crystal with bare feet.

RunnyRattata · 09/08/2016 13:21

I think if the athletes want to run about with their arses out then that's entirely up to them and I would have no problem with it as long as the usual rules about public decency apply. I like showing my body should be fine on its own. I would have a problem with male dominated committees or whatever they're called deciding that that's what has to be worn and making it awkward for women who want to compete to object. I don't know if that's how these things are decided or not. I think it's probably not readonable to expect people of any gender not to have a good look at whatever's on display though.

I agree with being Confused about why beach volleyball is an olympic sport at all. Why not things like lacrosse and netball?

I think 'I like showing my body' should be an ok enough argument on its own.

It's not in the least hard to comprehend, but since when did history dictate what we wear for any activity? If we worked on that basis we would still be wearing long dresses for playing tennis.

voluptuagoodshag · 09/08/2016 13:28

Hmmm I just googled mens and womens beach volleyball. Men seem to be wearing baggy shorts and a vest - women seem to be wearing minuscule bikinis. Why is that? If it evolves from a beach (not difficult to comprehend at all) then why aren't men wearing skimpy speedos?

Yes it is hard really because the presence of the sand itself is surely enough to distinguish it from the other volleyball and I don't know of many other sports where the kit hasn't evolved over time.
Your first post on this page illustrates exactly why I'm uncomfortable. It should be ok for your 13 year old to express concerns about the kit if she had any and not expect to be penalised. I know that's not how it works and that's why I think there's a problem. The agency is not in her hands and it ought to be.

GlindatheFairy · 09/08/2016 13:29

I don't like some skimpy outfits in sport, but women's bodies are different from men's. Female athletes may want to wear something different from their male counterparts just as I wear a dress and tights to work, not a shirt and tie.

I have not belittled her effort or said she had a problem with the kit. I was using her as a theoretical example. 'It should be ok for your 13 year old to express concerns about the kit if she had any and not expect to be penalised'
I can see where your daughter's sport has been criticised but not your daughter personally or her efforts.

No one is belittling her efforts. Beach volleyball is hard work I think we all agree on that but why should the athletes were such differing clothes depending on sex when the argument is that it's the easiest outfit to wear coz of the sand. My DD is a very well developed 13 year old and if she was asked to wear such attire I'd feel hugely uncomfortable about it and I'd be right in there asking these exact questions.

Sorry but if I was active on a beach I'd be in the skimpiest outfit I could wear. They're in big bikinis, not thongs and string bikini tops. I've even pondered if I could get away with similar when running in the heat.

I would worry about getting sand in my nethers. I still remember the horrors of doing the long jump at school in a gymslip and gym pants.

heknowsmysinsheseesmysoul · 09/08/2016 13:53

I think beach volleyball must be much harder due to the surface they're playing on and that's the difference.

I recently walked quite a distance on a beach and eventually just walked by the water where the sand was wet and therefore more solid and even; because I felt fucked trying to stomp through the dry, deeper, uneven stuff higher up the beach. My calves were killing me! It's like trying to walk through several inches of soft snow.

Yes I would say it and did say it Proud Mum. I am not taking away anything of your daughter's efforts so come down off your high horse. I am merely wondering why outfits are so skimpy for the females and not the males in beach volleyball. I am wondering why it is an Olympic sport but other sports are not.

And yes I do wonder why the male divers wear such small trunks but female ones wear an all in one costume. I do wonder why some runners wear such skimpy outfits but others wear shorts. Gymnastics too.
