To think beach volleyball is just an excuse for folk to perv at athletes in skimpy gear

I don't understand why it is even a distinct sport from normal volleyball. Surely it came about just because some folk were playing it on a beach? Why not then have beach gymnastics, or beach football or beach archery?

Kind of agree that the outfits pander to the reputation of the sport. I'm sure that it is indeed competitive, arduous and requires huge amount of talent. So why portray it as something else? No one goes to the gym wearing a bikini - it's not necessary. And Jessica Ennis doesn't wear those clothes either - they are skimpy and tight fitting but not as much as the beach volleyball ones.

And yy on the diving. Why not give the poor lads an extra couple of inches of fabric?

I don't actually. I don't like to be that exposed and I don't want to be tanned. Presumably being tanned is not relevant to these athletes demonstrating to us their astonishing sportsmanship.

OlennasWimple · 09/08/2016 12:09

There was never a need for maximum sizes for the female beach volleyball players' outfits, though, was there?

Practicality and advances in design tend to mean most elite athletes wear the same (think about swimmers and changing fashions and regulations on fabrics). No need to tell women their pants are too big to play the game Hmm

Cocolepew · 09/08/2016 12:14

If I had bodies like them I'd wear the gear everywhere.

lljkk · 09/08/2016 12:14

Do you say the same to gymnasts or track and field athletes?

Some of them, yes!! Why do the women gymnasts wear such skimpy outfits when the men gymnasts don't? DD (used to do gymnastics) says it's because the women grip onto things more with their legs, and the men simply don't. I also think the diving men could do the same dives just as well in jammers & not skimpy speedos.

The running athletes are fighting air resistance to shave off fractions of microseconds in their times, so there is a purpose to their skimpy outfits.

I also had a tirade at the costumes of women dancers in the opening ceremony. How strange that no male bums were hanging out so visibly. Hmm

Off topic slightly but is there a sporting reason why female competitors have to do their gymnastic floor routine to music while the men don't? Just wondering Smile

AlpacaPicnic · 09/08/2016 12:17

Not all the gymnasts have their arms covered.
Check out this Daily Fail link if you wish...

Neither North Korea or Uzbekistan have arms covered.

RunnyRattata · 09/08/2016 12:18

I did smile when the Brazilian divers's trunks were sensibly inches wider than everyone else's considering that Brazilian waxes and knickers are what they are.
Am I being thick or can wider shorts and longer tops not also be skin tight to avoid the sand getting in? It's not making sense to me. My skin tight yoga bottoms would be more difficult to breach than my equally skin tight bikini bottoms (which thankfully only the birds on the garden see these days)

The 'maximum size' for female players' outfits was utterly ridiculous and proof of how sexist sport still is, even at an elite level. If having a tighter outfit does improve their sporting performance (which is a dubious claim anyway) surely it should be up to them whether to wear a tiny bikini or not.

I thought male gymnasts had their arms out because that's what dominates most of their disciplines, upper body strength and need to see the lines etc and for female gymnasts the same is true of legs. Except in vaulting of course I think judges need to see the legs of all gymnasts?

voluptuagoodshag · 09/08/2016 12:24

I never insinuated that the sport wasn't difficult or competitive. I just get pissed off with all the hoo haa around sport today. Olympic 'sports' chop and change constantly, I've even heard that fishing might be included in future FFS. If so many sports are competing to be included in the Olympics why have two so similar? Why can't the beach volleyball players just try out for the volleyball team? I know what I'm saying will annoy folks who think their sport is the best but IMO too many hobbies and pass times are included under the brand of sport these days. And to piss folk off even more, I don't consider some of the disciplines (Olympic or otherwise) sport at all. Shooting, archery, darts, snooker etc. Yes there is great skill attached to each and it is competitive but sport? No, not in my book.

Yes Fuck you but you also said 'They're tight to stop sand.' I'm genuinely not trying to have a pop at you but I am trying to understand how it is that they work.

Having played both beach and indoor volleyball I can say beach is such hard work. Looks easy. Really isn't. Regular volleyball also hard work. Hats off to them
