AIBU?

People not locking loo door-AIBU?

Genuinely seeking views. My FIL is a little eccentric and generally that's fine. But he often does not lock the bathroom door when he's on the loo meaning I walk in on him by accident. I absolutely hate this and find it really rude especially when they are staying with us. Aibu?

Collaborate nobody is saying they go with the door open, the doors are closed just not locked so you'd poo the same way you would wee - in an bathroom with an unlocked but closed door where others knock Confused

A closed door means you knock in our house. I only lock the bathroom if there are guests in the house.

Is it not obvious taht he's gone to the bathroom?

Or do you have more than one?

Knock on the door!

I rarely lock the door, just because when the kids were tiny I was never allowed to - they would follow me in and talk to me (or sit on my knee!). Attempts to close, never mind lock the door were met with shrieks (I suppose they could have stopped downstairs with their dad, but apparently watching me doing a poo was more interesting than sitting wit OH watching football . . . and if dad wasn't there they had to come in with me for safety reasons.)

I've just got out of the habit of door-locking.

Yabvvvu I don't like locking doors of toilets, of they have a dodgy lock. I was locked in the loo a few times and it really scared me.

We have 2 bathrooms and they often go into their room for a lie down or to read so I can't just keep track of him at ours. When we visit them which is more often I try to rock out where he is before going to the loo because I know he often doesn't lock the door.
I can't believe I have never thought of knocking. So simple. I wish I'd posted years ago. I'm such a doofus

Don't you knock before entering a room?
Not routinely no, not in my own home.
We have locks on the bathroom doors but generally, the door is left open if it's not occupied.
However, I do expect other people to use the locks provided - that is what they are there for.

Don't feel a doofus - it's often the most blindingly obvious conclusions that take forever to reach!

Yes I'd always lock a loo door. Otherwise what is the lock for? Confused

I went to a NDNs for some drinks, about 25 people there. I trotted off to the loo and oh my god... someone I know from round the corner was sat on the toilet with his trousers round his ankles!

I'm still traumatised! I see him at the local pub and it's all I can do not to think of his red check boxers!

Why the heck he didn't lock the door god alone knows.

My in laws solved the problem of knowing if there was anyone in the bathroom in a rather unique way. They have a full sized glass door for their bathroom door (toilet sits right in front of it) along with no lock on said door.
I dread going there and needing the toilet because it's all just so open. Even worse in the winter with dark nights. You feel lit up like a Christmas tree! I have no idea what they were thinking.
The worst thing is that this bathroom door is directly in front of the front door to the house, so anybody just coming into the house would see you sitting there as soon as they walk in. Shock

Personally I'll happily admit I do like to lock the door if going to the bathroom. I enjoy the privacy and a chance for a couple of minutes peace to myself. Smile

I think what Collaborate meant was about closing the door you have a poo.

We always locked the door growing up because otherwise a sibling would burst in whether they knew you were in there or not.

Now we don't as only two adults in the house but I would if we had guests. The doors are often closed even if no one in there because the downstairs loo door has to be closed to open the back door and the upstairs one blows closed if you open a window.

This was a very boring post sorry.

Collaborate A shut toilet door means knock. The toilet may or may not be in use (probably is). So we do shut the door after a poo but when you knock there is no answer so you know the toilet is free.

A shut toilet door means the door is shut Grin I don't think it's code for anything else. And I don't want someone to knock on the door and have to shout back at them. If you don't know if someone's in there, you try the door handle (which also lets the occupier know there's someone waiting).

We never lick our bathroom doors unless we have visitors. Dd1 got trapped in our newly installed shower cubicle the plumber had put the handle on wrong so it would open from the inside.
thank god the bathroom door was open!

On my bathroom we have a sliding door and when I put the lock on, the kids will pull the door outwards and get in that way so when the lock fell off I never replaced it, the door is always open unless someone is using it. Downstairs we have a wet room with toilet and never had a lock on the door. I am happy there is no locks as my DS is diabetic and often has hypos and just falls to the floor so therefore I would have to break the door down if he could lock it.

I lock the door when we have guests. DD always locks the door, but we can unlock it from the outside if she has an emergency. The lock is in the handle, with a key on a hook outside.

My MIL has removed all the locks from the bathrooms in her house so that the grandkids can't lock themselves in Confused - the youngest is nearly 5! Makes you toilet more efficiently I suppose, if you're constantly alert to the possibility of someone walking in on you...
