AIBU?

People not locking loo door-AIBU?

Genuinely seeking views. My FIL is a little eccentric and generally that's fine. But he often does not lock the bathroom door when he's on the loo meaning I walk in on him by accident. I absolutely hate this and find it really rude especially when they are staying with us. Aibu?

We don't have a lock on our bathroom as i am disabled and it has to be that way so if i fall off the loo or in the bath people can get to me asap as it happens quite regularly
we do however always shout anyone on the bog or knock on the door before we pop in just to make sure we don't frighten any of our visitors

I don't know what to say about the underwear. I guess it's nice that he feels so comfortable in your house? It would put me off a bit too. I don't think there's anything you can do except tell him to put trousers on.

No lock on the loo door here, and door kept shut to prevent cat access. When we have guests stay over we have a ~special symbol~ (thing hung on the door handle) to indicate occupancy, but I'm still always a little nervous of walking in on somebody.

This thread makes me shiver in the gross memory of staying with the parents of my STB ex H: they had a tiny loo with no lock, and a panel of frosted glass in the door (no blind), so you could clearly see whoever was in there enthroned as you walked past to the kitchen. At nighttime the gamble was: switch on the light and be illuminated like a frickin' stage play, or go to the loo in the dark and risk being walked in on? (The loo had no washbasin, and bathroom next door to the loo also had no lock and the door wouldn't shut properly)so in order to wash your hands you had to run the gauntlet of seeing your in-laws in the shower. They were actually exactly like the Fockers and would happily welcome you into the bathroom while they were naked, but personally I found it very hard either to use the loo or the shower while I was there, knowing I might be interrupted with a cheerful "it's only me!" at any moment as an elderly in-law barged in to clean their teeth while I washed!

I walked in on my boss in the loo last week. Now THAT was embarrassing.

Haha, I was hoping you were going to say it was after he'd got up, but before he'd got dressed that he went for a little wander in his pants, but it sounds like he's probably beyond hope I'm afraid, OP.

hosta is there something to learn from when he likes to be in underwear? I don't know I think he just likes a good breeze round his bits. Cringe. So jn the mornings he's got his pj's on that's all fine. He'll get dressed and all. But then randomly throughout the day he walks about in his pants. He likes to change into shorts earn he gets home. Maybe he gets hot? But then he wears a fleece and a scarf and bare legs and little y fronts. Blush
I suspect h has had a word as I came back unexpectedly from work and he seemed embarrassed to be caught in this get up. My husband knows I find this Confused and probably noticed my awkwardness yesterday. Ugh - maybe that will just make ithe worse.

We don't have locks on our loo door but there are only two of us. When I lived with exP, he had locks but we never used them. DD has a bit of a thing about locked toilet doors so will rarely lock a public toilet door, I usually have to hold it with my foot (she only lets me in the cubicle if it's a wee, she needs privacy for a poo apparently, if only she gave me the same courtesy!)

In the house I grew up in, the bathroom was directly opposite the front door. My DM never closed the bathroom door and on more than one occasion my dad came in through the front door with a friend, only to find my DM perched atop the loo.

He fixed a hinge thing to the back of the bathroom door which meant it always closed.

Does he wander about all day in his y-fronts? Or at specific times and in specific circumstances? So, might he actually sit down to dinner in them or does he do it in the morning/at night/after a shower or something? At least he's wearing them, I suppose.

The underpants thing wouldn't bother me. But I can kind of see why it might bother you. Are you quite close?

A proffer of a guest dressing gown? And then fetch it for him whenever he's in the y front situation and help him into it giving him no chance to decline.

bakeoffcake "We never lick our bathroom doors unless we have visitors."

Do the visitors join in or is it like a little show you put on for them?

My MIL tried the leaving the door open thing recently at our house. This particular loo is in the main hallway between kitchen and living room, so people passing by all the time. Yuk.

I went for a campaign of saying loudly "is the door giving you trouble MIL?" as I pulled it closed. Did it a few times before she got the message, but she now closes the door.

Maybe you could try that with the lock... "Oh dear, is the lock playing up? I'll have a look at it when you're done to see what's causing the trouble. Don't want people barging in on you all unawares! Ha ha ha"

I always lock the door when I am in the bathroom. So do the DSs and DH.

You can't expect visitors to know the door shut means it's occupied thing. They aren't psychic.

Hate visiting houses with no locks on the bathroom door. Sad

I lock the door even if I'm home alone! And I never took my kids into the bathroom with me.

OK the y fronts thing again. Please have an equally brilliant solution. He's doing it now and I'm getting all itchy thinking he's going to sit down to dinner in his underwear. Help me see it front the other side please... where Im from this would be a total diss - like I'm a non person. I think he means nothing by it but I find it so Confused

Just ask him to please lock the door.
As for couples leaving the door open completely,.. I don't understand couples who are happy to watch each other empty their bowels. Grin

We don't have locks on our bathrooms, never have, so that's the way it has to be.

My MIL has removed all the locks from the bathrooms in her house so that the grandkids can't lock themselves in Confused - the youngest is nearly 5! Makes you toilet more efficiently I suppose, if you're constantly alert to the possibility of someone walking in on you...

I lock the door when we have guests. DD always locks the door, but we can unlock it from the outside if she has an emergency. The lock is in the handle, with a key on a hook outside.

On my bathroom we have a sliding door and when I put the lock on, the kids will pull the door outwards and get in that way so when the lock fell off I never replaced it, the door is always open unless someone is using it. Downstairs we have a wet room with toilet and never had a lock on the door. I am happy there is no locks as my DS is diabetic and often has hypos and just falls to the floor so therefore I would have to break the door down if he could lock it.

We never lick our bathroom doors unless we have visitors. Dd1 got trapped in our newly installed shower cubicle the plumber had put the handle on wrong so it would open from the inside.
thank god the bathroom door was open!
