To think that old magazines are not so important?

A friend of mine who is extremely frugal lent me some Jamie Oliver magazines a few years ago when I was off work with extreme anxiety/stress. Yesterday she texted asking for them back saying they were a subscription gift from her mum. I am pretty sure I got rid of them months ago or even longer. Anyway I can't find them anywhere. I didn't think she would want them back or if she did would have asked sooner but can't really remember the conversation when she gave them to me...I was in a bad way at the time. I've tried fudging it a bit saying I might have given them to mum etc but judging by her texts she's annoyed and really wants them back. My DH says she's being silly over years old mags and I kind of agree but I guess different things are important to different people. Part of me thinks I should try to replace them but I've looked on eBay and people sell them for a couple of quid each plus postage so even if I could get the right ones it would cost a lot. Back issues from the publisher cost a fiver each. I could get her a new subscription I guess which would be cheaper/easier but am I worrying too much? DH can't believe I'm even considering it and should just tell her I chucked them.

Didn't Jamie, do a supermarket magazine for Sainsbury, maybe that why you thought they were supermarket ones? I'd second buying her his cookbook instead...

Oh dear :( I think I'd have assumed they were not a loan, books = loan but magazines = chuck out when you're done. I think. :(

MrsMac2014 · 05/08/2016 11:01

Oh, I would have thought they were given to you and meant to have been recycled when you'd finished. I suppose she should have made it clear at the time and not left it for 2 years! Who's ever given magazines away and then asked for them back. A book maybe but not a magazine. (or is that just me)
I think you should 'fess up. Apologise, tell her you recycled them and ask her if she would like some replacement magazines or a Jamie cook book. She might not - I get my recipes on-line nowadays. Then ask your friends/family if they have any JO recipes and you can pass them on. You could get a magazines/books on ebay or from somewhere like 'The works' I'd be glad to get rid of cook books. Or print a selection off the www. and it'll take up less space. Good luck!

RepentAtLeisure · 05/08/2016 11:27

Wow. I've never heard of loaning magazines before! To me, you read them and the recycle one way or another. Were there many? I suppose if she is really determined to get them back and you want to keep her as a friend you'll have to remember the issue numbers between you and gradually buy them back for her. Such a drama though!

dobbythefuckingjizzelf · 05/08/2016 11:43

This thread is the very reason I never lend people old issues of magazines to read, if it was me I would be giving you the issue numbers missing from my collection and expecting you to trawl ebay until they were all replaced

It's not always just the recipes but other articles within the magazine that I keep them for and those articles won't be in the cook book

Fianceechickie · 05/08/2016 12:00

I've found a subscription for a tenner for six months and comes with 18 booklets to download which seem to be basically back issue content so got that. Texted her apologising profusely and explaining and said I'd email her the booklets...no reply so far!! If she wants to fall out with me I guess I've at least done my best.

I don't suppose you know which issues do you? I may actually have them (magazine hoarder here too!)

Fianceechickie · 05/08/2016 12:20

I think it's October 2012 to Sept 2013 ish! That be amazing if you did!

MrsMac2014 · 05/08/2016 12:27

or some of the Jamie cookbooks are on ebay with starting bids of 99p plus delivery, Sorry Jamie

Bumpkin2 · 05/08/2016 12:45

I think mine are after that but I'll check for you!

Fianceechickie · 05/08/2016 18:43

And now she's stopped speaking to me...despite apology and subscription...

Mine are later than those unfortunately but it sounds like it wouldn't have helped anyway!

AliceInHinterland · 05/08/2016 19:47

She is totally bonkers if that's really all its about. Friends of mine have not returned much more valuable items. I was not ecstatic but that's the risk when lending something.

SlinkyB · 05/08/2016 19:55

Your friend is being silly. You were in a bad place, she should just accept that she wasn't clear enough about retuning them, and that she should have contacted you a hell of a lot sooner.

FlowerOfTheWest · 05/08/2016 19:58

I'm a magazine hoarder but if I ever give any away to friends, no way do I expect them back! I think you've been very nice to buy your friend a subscription and if she takes the huff about it then she's blowing things out of proportion.

FrogsSpawnofSanta · 05/08/2016 20:06

Is it this Jamie magazine?
www.jamiemagazine.co.uk/Shop/BackIssue

They have back issues available.

Fianceechickie · 05/08/2016 22:19

Thank you! Yes it is..they're a fiver each though! She's got back to me now is all okay. She said I didn't need to get her the subscription but glad I did she obviously wasn't going to let it go. Love mumsnet where else would you get so many views from people who think the same AND totally different from you?!Smile I think she was being silly really but it is kind of what she's like over money and stuff. We're chalk and cheese me and her. Not sure the friendship will last but at least I've done the right thing...

Don't "borrow" anything else, no matter how much she insists!
