I have disappointed myself in being completely unable to put a fucking, bullshit, crappy bookcase together. It just will not work!

My DP offered to help me with it but I told him I was perfectly capable of putting together a book case, thank you very much. Now I have to go crawling back and say I can't. Gah! Angry

It is a thing of beauty OP. :)

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 03/08/2016 15:23

Well done Tumble!

I'm the flatpack assembler in the family too. DH never reads the instructions, goes at it bull-at-a-gate and like Zippy, we've had to agree never to build flatpack together again. For future reference I would definitely have an electric screwdriver (or drill with screwdriver bit) as it makes it all sooooo much easier! Grin

WingDefence · 03/08/2016 15:34

Oh that is certainly a thing of beauty! Does MN even have a DIY talk topic?!

Well done ImOnMyTumbleTap! Star

ParadiseCity · 03/08/2016 15:36

Y5 you say? Ooh if I recognise that bookcase when DD goes back to school I'll be very excited :)

Slummamumma · 03/08/2016 15:45

Brilliant- well done! I have made a bathroom cabinet once but couldn't have completed it without my then 4 yr old DS! "mummy, you need to look at the pictures.." !! oh yes, thanks I see...Grin

ImOnMyTumbleTap · 03/08/2016 15:54

Paradise, if you do and your DD is suddenly moved to another class because you are concerned about the teacher who can't tell the difference between a shelf and a frame panel, I won't judge! Grin

What's the light blue book you've got two copies of in the top shelf?

And where's Wonder (vital Year 5 book!)?

I know, I know, not really the point of the thread...

ImOnMyTumbleTap · 03/08/2016 17:43

I think they are called the Mystery Series Volume 1&2.

And Wonder? Who wrote it?

KingscoteStaff · 03/08/2016 17:54

R.J.Palacio. Amazing book. Can't recommend it enough.

I have just received 100 plastic paperback covers which (I hope) will extend the life of my book corner!

Both DC are coming in with me tomorrow to put them on!

ImOnMyTumbleTap · 03/08/2016 18:04

I've not heard of it but has been Amazon Primed. Thank you for the recommendation. Smile And the plastic covers sound like a great idea. My book corner is already dog eared from last year but those books are Miss I'mOnMyTumbleTap's personal books that the children can borrow but must be kept pristine.

I will probably tell them the story of the trauma of building my bookcase. It'll teach them about perseverance and teamwork.

DC read Wonder in school. He was forever telling me about it. Grin I haven't read it myself. It sounded quite a challenging book and I was very impressed they did it in class and apparently everybody loved it.

LooseAtTheSeams · 03/08/2016 19:47

Tumble don"t just tell the children - get them another Argos bookcase to put together to make sure they listened to your heroic story!

Brilliant idea Loose! Book cases for everyone! I'll let you all know when they are done so you can come and collect one each. Grin

My ex is amazing at anything practical, such as DIY, I am hopeless. Always seem to make things worse. Gender stereotype ticked.
But he couldn't find his way out of a paper bag whereas I'm generally good with navigation, do it on instinct. Stereotype not ticked.
Good luck with the book case. I'd call in help with it.
Years ago I bought a flat pack chest of drawers. Did pretty well assembling apart from one drawer. Just didn't have brute strength to get the bits together. It lay on floor until I acquired a new boyfriend months later who fixed it.

ImOnMyTumbleTap · 04/08/2016 18:09

cheval thank you but I have already finished it. Took me all day and a lot of Mumsnet help but I didn't need to tell DP I couldn't do it so I consider it a success. Grin

Yanbu please hand in your fanjo at your convenience you're not worthy of it.

Memoires · 04/08/2016 18:31

Way to go, Tumble!!

Should I say, proudly, that dd at 11yo, put together our 5 large bookcases. She tolerated me being in the room, but positively growled at her dad if he so much as poked his nose in the room! Perhaps, I shouldn't mention it. WinkGrin

Love that a book case has been built by social media - the women on mumsnet can do anything!

chubbylover78 · 04/08/2016 19:21

You've only let yourself down not all womenkind. I put up a stud wall and fitted a kitchen. My dp is totally crap at diy so I do it myself.

ImOnMyTumbleTap · 04/08/2016 19:29

Chubby Am I still a disappointment to myself now that I've finished putting it together?

TheTurtleMoves · 04/08/2016 20:24

You are a winner OP. Jolly well done old gel.

Postchildrenpregranny · 04/08/2016 22:22

Was really proud recently when DH and I ,after 34 years of living together, managed to put together an ikea extending table without any injuries, sobbing ,swearing or anyone stalking off in a huff .We have survived 9 Billy bookcases, 6 of the Dvd units that go with them , three desks , a wooden bed and a fiendish cabin bed.Plus a glass TV table .Thank god we are now rich enough not to have to buy flat pack !.Above table was a cheapie for when we have extended family over (rare)
The preferred method is now for me to do the construction ,calling on DH only when I need an extra hand or the addition of brute force
DD1 appears to have the gene and put together her Ikea triple wardrobe by herself aged about 15
DD 2 on the other hand has not .She has a female friend whose impending visit she has cunningly timed to coincide with the delivery of 4 chairs which will need constructing (should say she is doing friend a favour).Said friend put a desk together for her and identified why her oven wasn't working-the timer .DD2 is a Health Care Professional and otherwise quite practical .'tis weird.
But well done OP
