I feel quite guilty. I've had a rather shit day. Dh and I are struggling atm as I'm off work atm and I only get SSP, thankfully Dh is the higher earner (although he only earns 15k pa after tax) so we can survive, but what's thrown it all sideways is I've just found out I'm pregnant (today) bit of backstory so you can see why I'm in a rather impressive sulk.
I was going to the supermarket and when walking across the car park a woman blocked my path with a trolley. In her defence I wasn't really looking where I was going. Skirted around the trolley apologising. Unsure if relevant. Grabbed a trolley and went in store. Through several aisles this woman was in front of me. Each time she suddenly stopped and started texting. Three times out of about 7 I had to say excuse me. Each time she took over a minute to pull her trolley to the side The aisles are very narrow, big enough to get two smaller trolleys down side by side but not the bigger ones, she had a large one I had a small one, therefore I couldn't get around her without her pushing her trolley right to the side. Finally as I was heading toward the end of an aisle to check out she did it again, I ended up sort of impaled on the handle of my trolley and my knee jerk reaction to this was to shout "get your head out of your fucking phone before you cause someone or yourself a bloody mischief!" Blush feeling rather ashamed. Was I being unreasonable?

'In a perfect world, you would have omitted "fucking"'.

I love that--it sums up so much about MN. Grin

Summerwood1 · 02/08/2016 18:01

Haha, good on you. What did she say?

Missgraeme · 02/08/2016 18:02

I have started saying'oh sorry u walked in front of my trolley without looking where u were going ' They hear the word' sorry 'and think it's actually u apologising and u have the satisfaction that no u fucking weren't!!

Queenbean · 02/08/2016 18:02

Internet shopping is your friend OP

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 02/08/2016 18:03

Maybe next time she won't be so bloody self absorbed and will have some consideration for those around her - consider it a public service 😁

MargaretCavendish · 02/08/2016 18:07

You were rude, but you were having a bad day. She was definitely a bit annoying - but then, she might have been having a bad day too. She may have been checking her phone a lot because something was happening. I think we're all very quick to explain away our own 'bad' actions, but to assume that any rudeness on the part of others is a deliberate affront. I make a conscious effort to assume that others' rudeness isn't much to do with me unless there are clear signs to the contrary (something I was actively taught to do in CBT). I've found this approach has improved my own life (and mental health) considerably.

shinynewusername · 02/08/2016 18:08

This gives me the rage in supermarkets though it's not usually because of texting. Some people just seem unable to grasp the concept that other shoppers want to use the same aisle and block it completely by leaving their trolleys sideways and standing in the only remaining gap.

YWBU to swear, OP (though I can't really blame you) but YWNBU at all to be cross.

ChatterNatterer · 02/08/2016 18:09

YANBU

SoleBizzz · 02/08/2016 18:10

Yanbu. Good

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/08/2016 18:10

I'm sorry that you're going through a hard time. However we've all got our troubles that women included. I suppose. You don't the day she'd been having. You shouting and swearing at her might have been the last thing she needed. However that's not to say I do agree that it's annoying people stopping and texting infront of your feet all the time.

RichardBucket · 02/08/2016 18:14

YANBU. I hate these idiots so absorbed in their phones they have no concept or consideration of how they're affecting other people.

Ignore the what-iffers as well. If she was dealing with some huge emergency she should have realised after maybe the fifth time Hmm that she should park herself off to one side to carry on scrolling through Facebook texting about the emergency.

Mari50 · 02/08/2016 18:16

I think you were rude and I'm also amazed that you passed her 6 times only to keep finding yourself behind her as she dawdled on her phone.

TheWindInThePillows · 02/08/2016 18:17

One day, it might be you needing to text, or your child blocking the aisle, or you getting distracted. On that basis, why not just say 'can you move please' in a firm way?

Shouting and f-ing and blinding is always a good idea when you do it, not such a good idea when you are on the receiving end of it. It's not a nice environment to be in when you are shopping and hear this, it makes me feel stressed being around shouty intolerant people as I worry they will be shouty and intolerant around me and my children.

2kids2dogsnosense · 02/08/2016 18:19

It's not just phones - the number of people (well - women, though it grieves me to say it) who stand blocking the aisle with their trollies, kids and fat arses while they talk about what our Shane said to their Courtney at our Kylie's wedding (this also happens with Rupert and Cassandra at Jonquil's wedding, if you're in Waitrose).

I could spit.

I like the idea of tossing random crap into the trolley . . .

Junosmum · 02/08/2016 18:21

You were very rude. I keep my shopping list on my phone.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 02/08/2016 18:21

She's a clown don't even give it another thought.

Flowers for you cos you had a shit day.

wasonthelist · 02/08/2016 18:27

This is why gun control is a good idea.

mrssmith79 · 02/08/2016 18:27

Over a minute??? You were able to stand behind this woman and potentially have time to count to sixty? On more than one occasion. Don't believe you.
And you were incredibly rude.

MoggyMischief · 02/08/2016 18:28

I would have kicked her ass in my head

Swearing wasn't great. Drawing attention to her testing behaviour was spot on. But...you'll just be a rant she'll spout off for a night. I doubt it'll make her change habit.

WorraLiberty · 02/08/2016 18:28

It was probably a shopping list.

Either way, you were very rude and I have no idea what your back-story has to do with this?

Even the fact you have to ask if it's unreasonable to shout and swear at someone in a supermarket, beggers belief.

PovertyPain · 02/08/2016 18:30

Good for you. You did on behalf of all the people that she probably blocks on a regular basis. Flowers Grin

Isle blockers do my fucking head in. Put your trolley to the side, if you want to text, yack, check your shopping list. It's.not.fucking.rocket.science! My youngest has SN and knows not to block an isle.

OreosAreTasty · 02/08/2016 18:39

MN detectives are out in force tonight it seems mrssmith
Is it really totally inconceivable that someone would fail to shift their arse for over a minute after being asked and holding me (and others) up...
Do your shopping and fuck off IMO.
Yes I was rude.
Maybe that was unreasonable (opinion is split) I do think I should've found a different way to tell her to move her arse pronto, but I ended up just wanting her to bloody move asap. And I'm a dickhead when I'm hurt (may have threatened to throw DH out of a window for accidentally elbowing me Blush ) although generally not that bad these days. Oh well. Done now. Thanks for giving me a laugh (re filling trolleys with random items lol)

Sparklingbrook · 02/08/2016 18:42

I agree that you have no idea what was going on in her life. The texts could have been anything. maybe she was having a really stressful day herself.
And to top it all some stranger yelled at her in the supermarket.

No need for shouting and swearing. YABVVU.

allegretto · 02/08/2016 18:45

YANBU but today I had the same thing with a car driver - stopped at three red traffic lights (me behind her) and every single time didn't pull off at green as she was bloody texting!!

BagPusscatnip · 02/08/2016 18:47

You are my hero OP Grin
