To camp in random fields without permission in England

feellikeahugefailure · 02/08/2016 14:09

I'm thinking about doing a solo trip around Devon and Cornwall in a car. Campsites seem expensive, you have to book and often there aren't any where I need them

I've got a pop up tent.

Would it really be so bad to just pitch it at 9pm in some quiet field out of sight (and without animals) spend the night, then come 6am pack it up and move on?

Obviously I wouldn't litter or leave any sign that I was ever there.

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/08/2016 20:58

I'm not sure camping in a field counts as wild camping? Anyway, I think it WBU to camp in a field without permission. Non-enclosed areas I would say are fine as long as you are genuinely considerate. Are there any dunes or anything you an camp in?

BMW6 · 02/08/2016 21:01

Grow up OP. You own stuff don't you? So don't spout the "Property is theft" bullshit.

ilovesooty · 02/08/2016 21:03

Good grief. I didn't think the OP could become more ridiculous but she's exceeded my expectations.

george1020 · 02/08/2016 21:05

OP you really are something fucking special (and By special I mean 'special' )
Human waste is a lot different to animal/artificial fertiliser, wtf is wrong with you? surely being one with nature as you are you would know that!
You cannot just bury your crap in a field and think that's ok because it's not! You can ruin people's livelihoods literally just by shitting near their crops! And don't even get me started on the contamination in waterways.

If you tried to camp on our fields without asking first My very pretty mare that looks like butter wouldn't melt would literally chase you out of the field if you could run faster than her or attack you for being in her space.

It just really isn't safe at all!
Just ask first, most people would be happy to let you camp and then you give them the chance to make sure you are safe. Also make sure you leave nothing, tent pegs can cause some horrific injuries.

Pardonwhat · 02/08/2016 21:06

As long as you don't mind farmers camping in your garden in return. YABU Hmm

WellErrr · 02/08/2016 21:07

YABVU.

Can I come camp on your drive?

Katnisnevergreen · 02/08/2016 21:07

**6% of the land in Britain is owned by 0.3% of the population. Usually stolen from the commonwealth by threat of (or actual) force. And a large chunk of it is still owned by the same Norman families who were 'given' it after 1066.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/dec/17/high-house-prices-inequality-normans/

How can a human 'own' land. Who can prove their provenance without implicating themselves of theft? Too right I don't respect it. But I won't cause any damage, not because it belongs to someone but I believe the whole earth should belong to the people, not a lucky few.

Op, do you not believe in birth certificates and are in a common law marriage too? Hmm

SheHasAWildHeart · 02/08/2016 21:09

Well that didn't go how I was expecting it!

Memoires · 02/08/2016 22:39

Did the read the post about the farmers who would get fined and lose their ability to sell their produce if you dig a hole and leave your poo in it?

You're sounding increasingly like a spoilt brat, and one who can't even be bothered to find out in what ways you could fuck someone up.

1066 happened a looooong time ago. Get over it.

Memoires · 02/08/2016 22:42

I see this sin't the place for a grown up conversation on the idea of ownership ROFL

Not until you've grown up anyway.

Memoires · 02/08/2016 22:50

I suppose you have issues with ownership of all types. Why not, what's the difference? You're the one who eats their flatmate's yoghurts? Who uses their tea bags? Who eats someone else's lunch out of the employee fridge? I bet you are. Why shouldn't you? You're hungry aren't you, and who on earth takes food ownership seriously?

FoxesOnSocks · 02/08/2016 22:54

What a very strange turn this thread had taken 🤔

Weightgainorgoodbrain · 02/08/2016 22:54

I feel like there's been a few posters lately who have some interesting concepts to discuss but their method of delivery has been "I'm doing/saying this stupid thing because REASONS and the world is unfair so NERRR".

newtscamander · 02/08/2016 22:55

People try to do this in our fields. DP sets the dogs on them. It's private property and akin to us pitching a tent in your back garden ffs.

newtscamander · 02/08/2016 22:58

P.s you're obviously being goady, but fuck it.

Lurkedforever1 · 02/08/2016 22:59

Pps are bvu to suggest camping in op's garden. As she/he/it is 'wild camping' on farm land, it would be much fairer for livestock to go 'urban grazing' in her garden. House could be used as an 'urban barn' for cows.

Memoires · 02/08/2016 23:08

That's a much better idea, Lurked. This should be the new holiday of choice come Brexit. I think op should pave the way for the future by ensuring her garden is first on the list for Urban Grazing and her home opened to those poor cows who have nothing to look at but grass all day. She could make pots by taking them on days out to see the town. She won't charge though, as she doesn't believe in ownership.

NettleTea · 02/08/2016 23:08

*fucking up someone else's livelihood

camping for one night? this is why i havent posted a thread in aibu for months!*

unbelievable.
there are plenty of ways that 'camping for one night' which seems so harmless to you, could be fucking up peoples livelihood

crop contamination resulting in whole harvest being rejected/worthless
watercourse contamination
damage
breaking rules set by DEFRA for particular payments to do with conservation/SSSI, thereby causing farm to be fined/struck off scheme
destroying a particular habitat unintentionally
removing the option of 1/28th of an income based on camping which may be relied upon to keep a farm afloat, and subsequent loss of reputation with customer base

I could go on. But I expect you think they deserve it because all landowners are rolling in it toffs who just inherited from the queen.

I will explain that to my Parkinsons disabled mother in law who survives on less than £100 a week

NettleTea · 02/08/2016 23:10

i wonder if she owns the car she is supposedly driving around in. Maybe the landowner could use it to pull a plough or something while she uses his field. Just take it though. Dont ask.

IggyPopsicle · 02/08/2016 23:10

OP, regardless of your feelings on land ownership, would it really hurt you to just show a bit of courtesy and contact the land owner first? I come from a farming background and I can tell you now, the upkeep of land and livestock is hard enough without trespassers adding into the mix.

If you ask permission first, your luck may be in but if you don't ask you don't get...and you certainly shouldn't take.

IggyPopsicle · 02/08/2016 23:14

Oh fuck it, I can't resist....

To camp in random fields without permission in England
AgentProvocateur · 02/08/2016 23:31

What an unwelcoming lot you are! I've wild camped all over Scotland with no issues.

And I've also had tourists camp in my suburban back garden when they were stranded in Glasgow late at night and couldn't get transport to their site. We still get a Christmas card from them.

maninawomansworld01 · 02/08/2016 23:31

OP you sound like an absolute charmer.
If I caught someone someone like you with your attitude camping on my land I'd be back with a muck spreader before you could pull your clothes on!

People like you (entitled twats) deserve shooting
Stay in the city you ignorant prick.

Hockeydude · 02/08/2016 23:34

OP you seem not to like the society we live in and that is your right.

However, it doesn't matter how we got into the position we are in, the fact is that we have laws and customs that members of society abide by. If you don't, you will either end up with a criminal record or you will get into confrontations with people who do abide by our customs.

spankhurst · 02/08/2016 23:43

I actually think it's ok, if you do no damage and leave early. Lots of people wild camp.
