To be gutted that I won't be getting tax credits for 3rd child?

I'm just wondering what people's opinion is really.

We are trying for a 3rd child and I won't be getting any tax credits for this child as the government has changed the rules so that from next year tax credits are only paid for up to a maximum of 2 children.

I currently receive around £1k of TC for the kids and I would have received £4k for the 3rd if the government hadn't made the changes.

That would have meant an extra £250 a month. It's a lot of money for us. My DH works and I'm a SAHM. We have a £100k mortgage on a small house in a deprived area of town. We get by. We don't have much money left each month and I need to save literally for everything. I'm really really gutted. I really wanted 3 kids and this has meant that I'll be financially alot worse off now.

Of course I don't expect the government to "pay" for my children but it would have really helped, that's all. It would have eased the pressure off.

Just for the record we have never received any other benefits apart from JSA when DH was made redundant last year which was a godsend as we would have been homeless otherwise.

Do you think AiBU to feel/ think like this?

YY Dacre Ive never claimed tax credits and she still had a go at me.

It proves that tax credits arent what its really about.

firsttimerSW11 · 31/07/2016 19:01

I don't understand why people have children if they can't afford them. If you want a 3rd child, go and get a job and pay for that child. Why should tax payers fund your third child. Some of us think about whether we can afford more children before we have them, so it irks me when people think they should be able to tap into taxpayers money to fund them.
But don't worry, when Labour get back into government, they'll remove the welfare cap and tax credit limits and it'll become a free for all to pay for it, as the rest of us pay more and more tax to foot the bill.
Bitter, moi?

Sofabitch · 31/07/2016 19:04

Tax credits are paid to working families. So hardly scroungers sitting on their arse all day.

I think its too easy to say op get a job. There are many systematic failings that make that less than simple.

When a family with one earner making the average wage for the country can't afford to have the children they want and let's face it 3 isn't hugely excessive. Then something is seriously wrong somewhere.

Tax credits to me essentially subsidise business's and allow them to get away with shocking pay.

Here is another thing that contributes to the problem. IF these teachers are priced out of London who will be teaching the kids.

Pisssssedofff · 31/07/2016 19:08

Id rather starve personally Helena but each to their own

Marysunshine · 31/07/2016 19:08

Lindsxxxx
But clearly that is insufficient to meet their needs - hence why she wants to dip into the pockets ( again) of working taxpayers.

Don't work by choice - don't expect it is your right to take.

Sadly too many already do that and it needs knocking on the head.

Pisssssedofff · 31/07/2016 19:09

of course we need shops but a shop workers salary never has and never will support a family with or without tax credits

TippyT · 31/07/2016 19:10

We have a population issue there are too many people, and quite frankly. Deal with it, my OH earns too much so I don't get CB, I work 26hours a week. I would love to be a SAHM but unfortuntly for me the state will not fund it

falange · 31/07/2016 19:10

Pity for you. YABU. Get a job.

callherwillow · 31/07/2016 19:12

Let's keep the personal stuff out of it.

Laineymc7 · 31/07/2016 19:12

We both need to work too to pay for our children and our mortgage. I'd love to be a stay home mum but don't have that choice. We'd also love more than two but that's it for us.

Just5minswithDacre · 31/07/2016 19:12

of course we need shops but a shop workers salary never has and never will support a family with or without tax credits

But you were just having a go at her for taking retail work as a child free person Confused

callherwillow · 31/07/2016 19:13

The salary of two shop workers should actually be enough to raise two children with minimal state contributions.

Just5minswithDacre · 31/07/2016 19:13

Besides, plenty of people in retail have raised families Confused X 2

Lostwithinthehills · 31/07/2016 19:14

Pissed - your sister works 15 hour days on a Saturday and Sunday? What does she do on the other five days?

I didn't really understand your rant against Helena. Are you saying that unless people are working 75 hour weeks they are lazy? Those working hours are not really sustainable for most people in the long term.

Just5minswithDacre · 31/07/2016 19:15

The salary of two shop workers should actually be enough to raise two children with minimal state contributions.

Depending on housing, yes, I think you're probably right.

HelenaDove · 31/07/2016 19:15

YY Dacre as a childfree person i could get on here and moan like fuck about Child Benefit. But i dont because im not a nasty fucker.

And youd rather starve would you? And watch your children starve too. Dont be so bloody childish. Do you even know what starving to death is like.

HelenaDove · 31/07/2016 19:16

Sorry that last line was @Pisssed.

DragonsEggsAreAllMine · 31/07/2016 19:18

Sofa, three children is hugely excessive. Two adults and three children on one average wage just doesn't work without assistance.

We do need more future tax payers but they are more Iikely to come from families with a work ethic or immigration than families on benefits so there is no valid reason to subsidise them in order to ensure future workers.

Employers would benefit too, they would no longer have to worry about finding someone willing to do more than sixteen hours or refusing overtime.

Tax credits caused untold damage, it's going to take a long time to reverse that.

Just5minswithDacre · 31/07/2016 19:19

Sorry that last line was @Pisssed.

Phew! Grin

Namechangingme · 31/07/2016 19:20

Am child free too (what' a fucking depressing existence having kids seems, both RL and on here examples)

But ... I don't want kids in poverty

I also don't want to see kids brought up to play the system. Over the years it seems to be the way.

RepentAtLeisure · 31/07/2016 19:21

Sofa, three children is hugely excessive.

Really?! So if three children is hugely excessive, two children are excessive as well? If people only have one kid we'd better hope foreigners stop getting deported because we're going to need them.

YY bear. And like i said before even if extra hours are offered they are usually not consistent.

The tax credit system cant cope with intermittent inconsistent extra hours.

Sofabitch · 31/07/2016 19:28

I disagree that 3 children is excessive.

And we aren't talking about benefits. These are working families.

It's a systemic failure.

And 4k on around a 25k salary tax credits qre pretty much a tax break rather than everyone else paying.
