AIBU?

To expect my neighbours to bring my bin in?

Just arrived home from work, 6pm. It's bin day and like every week none of my neighbours (all retired but fit and well) bring my bin in. It's always left on the street causing obstruction.
I just know that if I was at home all day everyday id ring someone else's bin in if they were at work all day.

Attitude? Do you even speak to them? Or do you like here speak only when there is something in it for you? Have you broached the subject with them?

OP said she definitely would bring in others' bins in similar situation. She seems nice and socially responsible, and therefore annoyed when others aren't like that.

I think it's better to assume people will be helpful and neighbourly. I feel bad for those of you who feel that this simple idea of helping someone else is 'weird' or 'unheard of'. And for those of you who have automatically switched into 'nasty' mode.

I do think it's possible this is a wind-up. Which is also quite sad.

Lived in a cul de sac once where neighbours would complain about our bin being outside their house. The bin men dumped everyone's bins in that part of the road. As soon as we came home from work they'd be banging on their lounge window pointing at it with angry faces. Totally bizarre. Where I live now, totally opposite. Whoever gets home first brings in the bins for all 4 houses into their yards. Sometimes it's me, usually one of the neighbours, don't know if it's just one of them or all of them doing it. Seems the decent way to go about it if you ask me! Takes 2 minutes!

I put mine out and brought it back in when I was incapacitated no one did it for me. The bin men said I needed to ring the council if I needed help and it would take a few weeks. It is situated less than two metres away!

My neighbour brings ours back-all three, depending on the day, but she loves us and we love her and take her out for meals and buy her baccy when someone we know goes abroad. In our cul de sac, there are 4 houses round us whose occupants all look after each other and can call on each other for support as needed. It's nice to be nice.

Fucking bonkers. Generally myself and my neighbours only take in each other's bins because we know someone's away or for the elderly neighbours. We don't immediately put the bins away for each other as soon as they've been emptied. As for calling them dicks?! Don't be a dick.

I'm so glad some of you lot aren't my neighbours.
We don't need to bring each other's bins in here as our bins are emptied quite early so most people put them away before they leave for work. We do however help each other out with bins when someone is on holiday. I once went away for 2 nights and didn't bother to tell the neighbour (we usually tell each other if we are going to be away). I didn't cancel the milk which was due on the morning of our return day as it would only have been on the step for a few hours. When we returned there was no milk on the step until the neighbour appeared with it saying that he'd noticed we'd been away the night before and thought I had forgotten to cancel it, As it would have alerted people to the house being empty he had put it in his fridge for safe keeping until my return.
We don't live in each others pockets around here but we do look out for each other in a friendly neighbour kind of way.

I've done it sometimes for my neighbour and sometimes he's done it for us. There's nothing fixed, though, and I'd not expect him to do it under any circumstances thoughit's nice when he does.

I think if I expected it, I'd deserve it if it never happened, and I think you're being entirely unreasonable in thinking they should, feeling annoyed they don't and then feeling strongly enough to start a thread about it. Maybe that's why they don't do it? Do you expect anything else from them? Are you obnoxious, or snotty with them?

Grin bet they don't pop round to wipe your shitty arse for you either. Bloody lazy bastards.

I bring my neighbours bins in if they're out and they bring in mine if I'm not home, it's a neighbourly thing to do, however I wouldn't expect them to do it. Ultimately it is your bin and you are responsible for it.

On my road an older neighbour gets up and puts all the elderly neighbours bins out for them and then someone else goes and puts them away after. I think it's a lovely bit of community spirit.

I will bring my neighbours bins in if im home before them or vice versa

Don't be ridiculous! Of course they don't have to move your bin! Next you'll be wondering why they're not doing your supermarket shop for you...

I wouldn't expect them too. However, mine does it every week without being asked and convinced my landlord to take better care of the house.

I'm not really sure why you'd expect someone to bring your bin in for you. I don't even expect DP to bring the bin in let alone my neighbours. YABU

I think you may have been set up to think they should be unrealistic progammes about good neighbours, like desperate Housewives and the like.

I was surprised nobody brought me a casserole after i had my children. Wtf is that about?! Grin

YABU to expect them to.

YANBU to ask them very nicely if they would mind doing it for you - and then perhaps doing something nice in return!

It wouldn't even occur to me to bring in someone elses bin, unless they were physically unable to.

Report
PickAChew · 30/07/2016 00:20

YABU.

Only deal with neighour's bin when it's windy and likely to inconvenience others. They have at least one fit and well adult walk past it in the road after the lorry's been.
