I Know its a Failonline like but please read.

The food can't be healthy and looks like vomit. Why would one want to live like this. I understand that people are on budgets but I think I would rather starve.

I honestly don't get this frugal lifestyle you only live one life if you have the money spend it on living comfortable you could be dead tomorrow.

It looks tasty to me! I inwardly sneer far more at somebody saying a perfectly ordinary and tasty dish of vegetables and cream look like vomit than somebody publicising cheap recipes. Honestly - vomit?! - . sounds like something a 6yo might say - 'eeew vegetables!!' We spend far too much on food so im always looking for healthy cheap ideas. Personally I'd add some carbs like pasta or rice and a bit of cheese to complete the meal, but I'm a greedy bugger.

goddessoftheharvest · 29/07/2016 17:06

I've just had a look at her blog, and her meal plans and accompanying shopping lists are actually bloody good. I'd maybe bulk the mains out with some baked spuds or salad, but I'm going to have a go at using them when I go back to work in September

My grandmother was a great grandma by the time she was 63, and now at 72 has six GGC.

Not that unusual if all the generations had their first children in early 20s.

MyPeriodFeatures · 29/07/2016 17:19

My Mum cooks something that looks a bit like this but its a bit more orange - lots of cumin and paprika. Its called vegetable crumble and came out of a recipe book from a little vegetarian cafe i went to with her over 15 years ago. She varies with whatever veg is left over. I love it, it is my death row meal! If you are honestly disgusted by the sight of it and its contents you are adding to my list of reasons to despair at the state of the world! Enjoying being frugal, cooking healthy meals from scratch and being a great grandmother at 63? How awful to have a houseful of family and enjoy feeding them...

SuperFlyHigh · 29/07/2016 17:20

Not read the whole thread but that gratin looks nutritious as well as tasty.

she actually has some tasty if limited recipes on her meal plans and a vegetarian diet is supposed to be better for you than supplementing it with meat/fish.

she even does a festive meal plan with mince pies etc.

To be honest she has a lot of common sense if she saves rather than squanders her money.

SuperFlyHigh · 29/07/2016 17:23

YellowDraw - you do realise the 5 a day campaign was started by the UK Department of Health - some say encouraging the profits of the fruit/veg growers and sellers in UK.

I don't ALWAYS eat my 5 a day every day and I haven't died yet...

bitemyshinymetalass · 29/07/2016 17:27

And you realise that many countries its 7 or 10 a day, and whether or not it was to increase someones profits (which I doubt anyway) it is good advice for your health.

soyvanillalatte · 29/07/2016 17:32

I wouldn't worry about her existence. She has more equipment in her kitchen than I do and looks like she isn't skimping on herself. The you tube will be monetised soon enough too.

PuntasticUsername · 29/07/2016 17:35

OP's fucked off, then Grin

This is one of those threads where basically the OP's argument is "I have just discovered that some people live in different circumstances and/or make different life choices to me and I am shocked, SHOCKED I tell you".

Drama123 · 29/07/2016 17:37

Great stuff! Puts me to shame. Apart from lack of protein, I bet shes alot healthier than me.

Drama123 · 29/07/2016 17:39

😂😂 this is so true. How dare someone live a bit different!

Happyhippy45 · 29/07/2016 17:46

Being thrifty is awesome. I won't spend a fortune on food. I don't have to. I cook from scratch. Cheap, tasty and healthy meals. I don't throw out food either. Likewise on clothes etc. I don't buy shit just because I like it. I buy things because I need it. Wine is a necessity It's not grim or depressing to me. It's enjoyable. In such a throw away society it's good to read something like this.
This page is good. Lots of really tasty food and great ideas to save money.

It is healthy and quite varied, good for her, she obviously gets pleasure from being inventive with food, even though she probably doesn' t need to be quite so frugal anymore.
I'm a registered dietitian and all the talk now is about protein needs and how we might have underestimated them, and that as you age you need to ensure a good intake, 1-1.5g/Kg to prevent muscle loss and frailty, so ideally she should up that a bit. Otherwise well done her.

Happyhippy45 · 29/07/2016 17:50

crocodile smile exactly! Well said!

elgol · 29/07/2016 17:59

Interesting op.

Would someone mind posting a link to the Facebook page or blog thing please? Am not sure how to find it without going through the DM link and i don't think my phone could cope with that.

SpinachForever · 29/07/2016 18:07

Here is a link to the blog.

CommanderShepard · 29/07/2016 18:18

I'd much rather go for dinner with her rather than you. I like my meals without a side dish of sneering, which seems to be in abundance on your plate.

Curry travelled back up indeed. How incredibly rude of you.

littleprincesssara · 29/07/2016 18:21

It sounds delicious. I'd happily eat that as a main meal, and I equally happy eat in expensive restaurants.

I don't understand what vegetable bake has to do with Brexit and pesticides, but I feel this could quickly go the way of penis beaker, naice ham, pom bears, etc.

GillianFortWilliam · 29/07/2016 18:23

YAB(extremely)U - my sister feeds herself and her four kids on a £40 a week budget (which is all she has left after basic household costs). That's £1.14 per person per day. Meals like this become an inventive way to have the same veg (because they're all you can afford) again and again. You think you'd rather starve? Really? I suspect not.

Grittyshunts · 29/07/2016 18:31

The way I read it these are meals she used to make for her kids when they were skint and now she's trying to help other people, who may be struggling, learn how to cook meals for less. Good for her!

ApocalypseNowt · 29/07/2016 18:40

roasts sourced from a good qaulity butcher

You said sourced so you lose. Ner.

RichardBucket · 29/07/2016 18:44

All these "needs protein" comments make me cringe. Most people vastly overestimate how much protein people need per day, AND underestimate how much protein is in non-animal foods.

If you're taking in enough calories and don't have some kind of Freaky Eater restriction, it's almost impossible to not eat enough protein.

dizzyfucker · 29/07/2016 18:44

It's hardly a depressing existence. She's doing something she loves and helping people at the same time.
I would say this is an accomplimant dish rather than an actual meal and I can imagine people eating just this would end up snacking on high calorie junk between meals. But it's a good thing she's doing.
It sounds tasty but I love suede, squash, cream and garlic.

roundaboutthetown · 29/07/2016 18:46

I think her recipe sounds delicious.
