Dog owners put them on a lead!!!

I am a runner, Im so tired of people's dogs running and jumping on me while i'm on a run. Its always dog owners with the larger dogs, if you have a dog that is excitable and is known to chase jump and be a general nuisance to others trying to enjoy the park please put it on a lead.

I suffer severe allergies and today a dog jumped on me while i'm out running and scratched my leg. I have now got a 4 inch scratch which could scar from the knee down. The lazy owner had the dog off a lead and was very overweight so could not keep up with the dog running off ahead.

She then had the nerve to tell me i was out of order for kicking the dog off me.

Please Dog Owners put your dog on a lead.

So what is she supposed to do when a dog I attacking her? And the owner hasn't/can't call it off? Most of us are not Dog Whisperers. I know fuck-all about dogs and how to get them to go away and frankly there are plenty of other things I ought to learn first.

This thread is reminding me why I have cats.

It's not up to us to learn how to control your dogs.

MuffyTheUmpireSlayer · 28/07/2016 16:31

YANBU. I don't think dogs should be kept on leads in parks but if you see cyclists/runners/walkers with children either put it on a lead or make sure you are there ready to stop it jumping on anyone.

(On another note, it is equally annoying when dog owners lett their dogs run up to you and sniff around your picnic. Not everyone is a dog lover, we are not all going to fawn over your dog!)

Of course dogs have every right to enjoy the freedom of the park, which is fine, but so do people.

Seriously
Some children like my son are scared of dogs because their owners allow them to jump up at pushchairs with babies in or rampage through a group of mums and toddlers eating lunch!
Do you seriously think it's okay?
If I run up to you scratched your face and stole your food you'd be okay?

I could hardly think of a more idiotic posts, and I've seen a few on MN.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/07/2016 16:35

I've been attacked (bitten) by a dog
Ive had a dog meander over and piss over my picnic
I have been chased for nearly a mile by a snarling dog when cycling.
I have on numerous occasions had dogs come over to my on lead dog and Attack it.

I still wouldn't start a thread saying "dog owners put them on a lead"

I would say to those dog owners that their dogs should be on a lead.

motherinferior · 28/07/2016 16:35

What's bizarre is if it were children - or heaven forbid teenagers - behaving like this, pestering people in parks, kicking might not be approved of but it would be all about 'can't their parents control them'. Nobody would suggest always carrying food to distract them (the suggestion made on a thread by people responding to a woman who had hit a dog because it was holding her toddler face-down in damp sand)).

harshbuttrue1980 · 28/07/2016 16:35

YANBU to expect to be able to enjoy a run without badly trained dogs pestering you. Badly behaved dogs should be on leads, well trained dogs should be recalled back to their owner if they cause any hassle.

YABU to bring body image into this scenario - the dog owner being overweight (in your perception) has nothing to do with her lack of consideration as a dog owner. Larger people aren't any more or less likely to be considerate, so no need to bring that up.

I never understand why people compare dogs to children or teenagers.

Dogs are not humans Hmm

I have cats. I like dogs. I never get the hysteria about animals on mumsnet. When I was out with my baby (yes - my baby!) the other day, a dog off-lead came up and sniffed the buggy. No drama. Dog simply sniffed and walked off as realised there was nothing of interest there. Baby smiled at it.

IJustAteTheKidsFoodAgain · 28/07/2016 16:38

I run with my dog. The fucker never leaves me alone. I have kicked him before to get him out my way. I don't know which camp to join hereConfused

We NEVER experience the stuff that supposedly happens on MN. Never.

Lots of people experience things you don't. So?

Idiotic because I don't want my 18month old to be hurt by a dog that's out of control?
Or because I don't want mutt to slobber over then Nick my lunch!
Seriously it's MUMSNET!!
If you think your pooch is more important than completely innocent baby maybe log on to dogsnet...

My cat too, except when I'm walking. The little shit. Grin

Maybebabybee · 28/07/2016 16:39

I honestly don't believe the half of all these dogs threads that appear every single week without fail.

I agree.

Surely if you're going to have a dog off lead in a park then you train it to come back to you on command and you keep an eye on it? And if that isn't possible you can't have the dog off the lead around other people. I am scared of most dogs.
As for the "if you kicked my dog after it had injured you I'd hit you" thing... In that case I'd be reporting you to the police both for having an out of control dog which injured people and for assault. I don't think the outcome would be one you'd like.

Lweji · 28/07/2016 16:41

You think it's ok to kick the dog?

Quite frankly, if he scratches or bites, and is at risk of doing it again, yes.

IJustAteTheKidsFoodAgain · 28/07/2016 16:42

I wouldn't be worried about a big dog - it's the little ones you should pepper spray when they get close

On a more serious note, if my dog hurt someone intentionally or otherwise I wouldn't blame them for giving him a (hopefully gentle) kick. Fear of dogs must be awful if a dog decides to come up to you and recall is so important to teach a dog, if only for their own safety near a road, but if you're in an area used mostly by people with dogs they are more likely to be unruly dogs hence they have to go there
