Dog owners put them on a lead!!!

I am a runner, Im so tired of people's dogs running and jumping on me while i'm on a run. Its always dog owners with the larger dogs, if you have a dog that is excitable and is known to chase jump and be a general nuisance to others trying to enjoy the park please put it on a lead.

I suffer severe allergies and today a dog jumped on me while i'm out running and scratched my leg. I have now got a 4 inch scratch which could scar from the knee down. The lazy owner had the dog off a lead and was very overweight so could not keep up with the dog running off ahead.

She then had the nerve to tell me i was out of order for kicking the dog off me.

Please Dog Owners put your dog on a lead.

YANBU to expect dogs to be under control, but you are a bit (well a lot) of a drama queen.

BusyJessica · 28/07/2016 15:15

You Know what I mean and your just trying to troll me, I mean the instinct.

Good old Fenton!

MunchCrunch01 · 28/07/2016 15:18

i commented about the leggings because Op stated that dogs jumping on her is a daily thing, and I thought she was getting scratched daily. I wear trousers to walk my dog in case a dog with muddy paws does jump on me (not my well behaved canine). If the Op who has severe dog allergies had been wearing leggings, she wouldn't have been injured - that's just common sense, but also she should find a way to report this dog as indeed it's obviously not well trained and being a nuisance.

allegretto · 28/07/2016 15:19

I'm with you OP. Dog owners who can't control their dogs but get arsey if you ask them to put their dog on a lead are a public nuisance. At our local park a woman with a huge dog let it bite a child and then SHE screamed and ran away. If you are too small to control a big dog you shouldn't have one, on or off a lead.

bigreendumbell · 28/07/2016 15:19

That dog has BAD recall! just trying to lighten the mood Smile

allegretto · 28/07/2016 15:19

I have been scratched by a dog through my clothes so I don't think leggings would make a difference.

MunchCrunch01 · 28/07/2016 15:19

similarly i walk my dog daily and i've been jumped up on about twice in the last year that i can recall. Are dogs especially attracted to runners?

Mia1415 · 28/07/2016 15:19

If you are really that scared of dogs & you run in a park where there are so many dogs they are jumping up & scratching you every other day, why not just run somewhere else???

I'm not defending badly trained dogs by the way. They should be on a lead! However they aren't and your park is clearly full of them, so just run somewhere else!

dietcokeandwine · 28/07/2016 15:19

YANBU OP.

Basic message is: if a dog cannot cope with the sight of an adult running, or a child playing, without instantly assuming they can join in/jump up/bark wildly, they should not be off the lead.

My childhood lab was a shocker (despite my poor mum doing endless obedience classes with him) for getting over excited and doing daft things like jumping up when he saw runners or cyclists. So he was put on the lead whenever we saw one in the distance, and never taken for walks in public parks where we were more likely to meet them. It's not rocket science.

My 3yo DS, who used to love dogs, is now terrified of even the smallest one after a young, very enthusiastic, over bouncy Boxer leapt up at him whilst we were walking in our local park. The size of the dog proportionate to DS was such that the dog's paws quite literally landed on DS's face and bowled him over. The only tiny glimmer of positivity to the whole thing was that the owner didn't do the cheery 'ooh don't worry, he's ever so friendly' thing but simply said 'oh my God I'm so sorry' before getting the dog away.

There are plenty of lovely dogs and considerate dog owners around but sadly they are always outnumbered by the idiots.

RiverTam · 28/07/2016 15:20

This thread literally appears every week because there are so many twatty dog owners out there who don't train their dogs and who's dogs have shit recall.

StuffYouAllInTheCrust · 28/07/2016 15:20

YABU Ok so the dog should've been under the control of the owner but you kicked it?! You're lucky it didn't bite you. And that I wasn't its owner.

LuckySantangelo1 · 28/07/2016 15:21

YANBU. I've been jumped on while running and it's horrible. I don't like dogs jumping up at all and I find if quite threatening when they are large. I live close to a bridle way & the local cats are constantly being chased by out of control dogs. My neighbours cat got caught and badly injured. It was pretty awful.

applesandpears33 · 28/07/2016 15:22

YANBU. DD is scared of dogs and hates it when dogs jump up at her and try to lick her.

MunchCrunch01 · 28/07/2016 15:22

the poorly trained dogs are more salient in people's minds as people talk about bad experiences more, if you don't like dogs you don't particularly talk about or recall the majority of well trained good dogs you meet.

2016Hopeful · 28/07/2016 15:22

YANBU - dog owners should be responsible and if the dog doesn't behave it should be kept on a lead if people are around. Imagine if a dog jumped up at a toddler it could seriously injure him/her even if it was 'just playing'.

Stuff - out of interest how can you get a dog off you without kicking it/pushing it?

bigreendumbell · 28/07/2016 15:23

The OP only kicked out at the dog, because it was scratching her and drawing blood.

allegretto · 28/07/2016 15:24

Pearlman - exactly! If it had been a female runner having problems with men nobody would have said "your fault, run somewhere else" but dogs are apparently more important than people nowadays.

cricketballs · 28/07/2016 15:28

thought it was too long on here without a dog thread its amazing that there are all these dogs jumping on people, licking people, chasing people etc when in all my years of walking dogs I have never witnessed a single dog doing any of these things

DotForShort · 28/07/2016 15:30

YANBU to want to be able to run without having a dog jump on you (though kicking it was wrong IMO). I truly cannot believe that anyone could excuse a dog jumping up on a runner as anything other than a badly behaved dog and an irresponsible owner. IME, many dog owners overestimate their control and their dog's recall.

I adore my dog but I am fully aware that not everyone else does (though he is the sort of dog that has made converts of even committed dog haters Smile). It is my responsibility to keep him away from people who may dislike/fear/be allergic to dogs. It isn't even difficult in any way.

mrsplum2015 · 28/07/2016 15:31

I totally agree. I've never been bothered about or by dogs but I now have a (small) 7yo boy who is extremely frightened of them. Everywhere we go there seems to be a dog who runs up to him, jumps and scratches him or nips him. No biggie a dog owner thinks. But each f$$ing episode makes him more anxious and distressed so it is a big problem to me!

Gottagetmoving · 28/07/2016 15:32

A dog should be kept on a lead according to the Road Traffic Act 1988.
If a dog chases people then the owner should have it on a lead. Dog owners can be a bloody nuisance.
One of our neighbours told me to not let my small nephew use his scooter outside my house because her dog would go mad and chase him!
I can't repeat what I said.

PersianCatLady · 28/07/2016 15:33

If you were running in an open park, get over yourself.
Totally dogs have to be on a lead on the pavement and on most beaches in the summer. Parks are one of the only places where they can run around free, if you don't like dogs why don't you go and run somewhere else.
