We went when the kids were 8,6,4 and I remember it being horribly expensive, a bit stressful but yes fun with the Ariel photos etc and we loved discovery bay with the Dolphins.
I have an additional child now that never been aged 6, he loved Lego land and they all really enjoyed Disney Paris at Halloween last year.
I'm trying to talk myself into booking but god it's a lot of money isn't it? I'm looking at £6000 for a fortnight I think being conservative and not eating in Disney ever

The tickets are very expensive. You could easily spend £2500 on tickets for 6. Work out what parks are must dos. We do Disney or universal never both in one trip. Universal is great for older kids, especially if they like Harry Potter. Generally speaking uk travel agents are clueless for Disney and oversell tickets etc. If we are doing Disney we book with Disney and stay in a deluxe Disney hotel with free dining. With a big group a villa may be a better bet. Dibb has a villa rental section. Flights consider indirect for big savings look on skyscanner. October is a lovely time to go. If you must go summer last 2 weeks August best as us schools are back in.

Mrsderekshepard · 26/07/2016 14:30

That's really cheap. As a family of 5 we've been quoted 5.5k just for 2 weeks al in Spain!!

Dixiechickonhols · 26/07/2016 14:30

June July is red hot and mega mega busy. I wouldn't go then unless you have no other choice.
If you look on touring plans it gives a crowd prediction each day - massive drop off late August and October. If you are taking out off school tack a week onto October half term.

Pisssssedofff · 26/07/2016 14:30

We did animal kingdom in 2008 it was £6000 including flights, now £11,000 without 😳

Octobers a massive price drop isn't it

Dixiechickonhols · 26/07/2016 14:34

October is cheaper and low crowds. Just been planning mine we go again on 23rd October (2 week half term) parks are 2/3 out of 10 busy. They are 9 or 10/10 July. Big tour groups from South America too in July. I like Disney but not busy Disney.

SistersOfPercy · 26/07/2016 14:35

For me it depends on the park. I was very lucky as a teenager to visit Disneyland L.A many times, and I've taken my own children there as well. For me, that park is worth every penny as a visit to California itself is a special holiday.
By contrast we visited Paris after Cali and we were very disappointed. I'm probably comparing apples with oranges but it just didn't do it for me and although we had 4 day passes we only used 2 days and spent the other 2 days exploring the metro and stopping off at random stations to explore.

I would love to visit the Orlando park though as DD is desperate to see Hogwarts.

Finola1step · 26/07/2016 14:35

We went last year. Loved it. Going back 21st Aug for two weeks.

pegomassive1 · 26/07/2016 14:37

For me yes. Fantastic childhood memories I went 5x with parents and once with dh at age 22.
I can't wait to take my own dd when she is around 5/6
Of course it's not worth it if you can't afford it etc only of you can manage it financially

Dixiechickonhols · 26/07/2016 14:40

We are £3300 for animal kingdom lodge (deluxe) inc all food and tickets for 3 of us (all Disney adults..dd is 10) Flights were £400 each. Also got $200 gift card as we booked April 15 for October 16. Only spends needed are tips which will use giftcard for. For 13 nights. Not cheap but worth it to me. We will visit the 4 main Disney parks and typhoon lagoon water park.

Beckie222 · 26/07/2016 14:40

We are just back from 2 weeks in a moderate Disney hotel. We're a family of 4 and the holiday cost us £5000. This included direct flights, 14 nights hotel, tickets for all the Disney parks for the duration of our stay and the Disney dining plan. We also got a $200 gift card included which covered bits and bobs the kids wanted in the Disney shops. In total we spent £450 over there and this was shopping which we brought home. So really with the dining plan included we really could've went and not spent a penny.

Staying onsite gives the benefit of using the Disney transport so we didn't have any car parking or taxi fares to worry about.

It really really was the holiday of a lifetime and we wouldn't hesitate to go back. We normally do a European beach holiday and for 2 weeks this would normally cost around £3000, so with that considered I thought it was excellent value for money for the type of holiday we got.

Pisssssedofff · 26/07/2016 14:42

Just went on the direct site and it's coming in at £7315 for October this year including flights, hotel, park tickets and the basic food plan. I'll keep playing around with it to see if I can cut that down but it seems a good way to estimate. Tickets were £1600 and I wouldn't buy the food plan, they can fill their boots at breakfast lol

Hogwarts is at universal sisters of Percy no need to do Disney unless you want to. We find plenty to do with a week at universal. Dd loves both Harry Potter sections in universal and islands of adventure, theming and ride technology superior to Disney imo.

PNGirl · 26/07/2016 14:43

I was going to suggest either Easter or doing 10 days over a half term holiday. I went with my husband in November (not far off half term) and it cost us £700 each for a week inc flights and hotel with Virgin. We then paid I think £200 each for a 14 day pass for Universal x2, Seaworld, Aquatica and Busch Gardens. They don't tend to do 7 day passes any more. If we'd wanted to do Disney we'd have got a 1 day pass and done Animal Kingdom/Hollywood studios for about 100 dollars.

I think it's totally worth it. I went when I was 15 with my best friend and her family (parents wouldn't fly any further than 4 hours) and my husband went at 17. We both loved it so much we went for our honeymoon in 2010!

Dixiechickonhols · 26/07/2016 14:44

You need to book in advance for Disney offers. You will get free dining for oct 17 if you book now. Also reservations for restaurants open 6 months out- booking last minute is trickier if you want to eat at Disney and do character meals.

Dixiechickonhols · 26/07/2016 14:45

Breakfast isn't included at Disney hotels in America (think it is in Paris)

BeALert · 26/07/2016 14:49

I'd rather spend the money on taking the children somewhere like Costa Rica which they absolutely loved.

Mum2Pea · 26/07/2016 14:53

For 4 We paid
2200 for flights with BA in August
1200 for 2 bed at staybridge suites
1200 for 14 day wdw passes
200 for 1nt in wdw htl to get the free early fastpass, restaurant bookings, magic transfer and magicbands
500 for US 3 day pass
150 for US hotel for the early entrance
500 for SUV car hire
Would guess our shopping was approx £500
Rest went on
Character meals
Wdw parking
Meals in non disney most evenings

CalmDownBeyonce · 26/07/2016 15:03

If it's your 'thing' then it's absolutely worth it, if it's not, then think again! Some people love the hustle and bustle, always being on the go and basically living in a fantasy land for a fortnight, for others, understandably, that's a hellish concept!

We love it and can't stay away; we were most recently there last November and are planning to do a 'big' Disney holiday in 2/3 years time but we've actually booked a relatively cheap 11 night holiday at Universal's Cabana Bay (their on-site 'budget' hotel) for next May as it was cheaper to do that with car hire and Universal tickets than to go to a decent resort in Europe. We know we love Florida, we love the weather, the food, the shopping, the theme parks etc so we're happy to keep going back there. We're not planning on doing WDW this time (saving $$$'s) but the Universal parks are great fun so we're not going to feel like we're missing out too much. Can't wait!!!

Dixiechickonhols · 26/07/2016 15:09

Love Cabana bay Beyonce we stayed for a week in May (our 3rd time there)

Babymouse · 26/07/2016 15:09

I grew up not to far away from Disneyland. If it is a once in a lifetime trip I would really recommend going at an off peak time when American kids are in school. There is something fantastic about getting to ride rides over and over again (and the summertime weather in Florida is hellish). Also I'd wait until kids are old enough for a lot of small children the only thing they remember is the hotel pool (my own memories of Disneyland trips really start around 10/11 before that I only remember bits and pieces)

davos · 26/07/2016 15:10

We get villa, flights and cars for about £2k in January. Always book the villa last minute. And book basic car with good insurance package and upgrade at the airport.

The whole trip for 4 of us including tickets, spending money , food etc costs us about £6k

And worth every penny. We are planning a return trip in 2017. We used to go every other year

But I don't think it's for everybody. I totally get why some people wouldn't like it.

davos · 26/07/2016 15:11

The whole trip for 4 of us including tickets, spending money , food etc costs us about £6k

Also, should have included, if the exchange are is good we buy loads of trainers and clothes there as well.

m0therofdragons · 26/07/2016 15:16

£3500 for flights and accommodation? For 5? I can't find a week in Majorca for 5 for less than that. I'm jealous

Pisssssedofff · 26/07/2016 15:16

nor sure what to do with the tickets, we want a day and swimming with dolphins at discovery cove, the older ones will want a couple of days at universal I think, Harry Potter and behind the scenes, I think two days at wdw would be enough for me but not sure if that's a clever way to buy them
