to ask you for a motherload of heartwarming, tearjerking, cosy things to watch, in deference to DP's mildly pregnant hormones?

Yes, including things with new babies if you would like. I want to find a load of nice, sweet, soppy films and TV things, because at the moment she can't cope with gritty realism. She's not big into stuff like Call the Midwife but she made me watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks at Christmas, so if there are good classic films we might not have seen, those would be great.

Thank you!

Gilmore Girls is a very good one. But even better is Freaks and Geeks, set in an American high school in the early 80s about a pair of siblings, a geeky little brother and a formerly geeky/preppy older sister who has recently started hanging out with the 'freaks', and their friends. If ever a tv series could be described as 'perfect' that is it.

Oh, thank you so much everyone, this is fantastic. I have a great list going now.

I love Fried Green Tomatoes. I have the book too. It's just perfect, and actually one DP introduced me to, so that is clearly right on her wavelength and so lots of the others should be too.

I've heard of 'Winter's Bone' but can't remember where. Possibly on here, actually.

Everything else sounds good too.

I like to go old school when I'm feeling like this, the Goonies, Big and Stand by me

Goodnight Mr Tom is not ideal watching material for a pregnant person IMHO (altho it has a happyish ending...)

RobinsAreTerritorialFuckers · 26/07/2016 11:20

Yes, I think I am going to save that for me to watch on my own! (I know the story)

I couldn't watch anything remotely violent when pregnant (which was a huge pain as my usual movie fare is war films, thrillers and crime dramas).

DH came home with "Amelie" one day. I must have watched it about 20 times. It's fun, soppy and a bit quirky. So if she's happy to watch something with subtitles, I'd recommend that.

Others along a similar vein that I watched while pregnant, or would have appealed to pregnant me are:
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
The Grand Budapest Hotel

I love old faithfuls like
Dirty Dancing (already mentioned, I know)
Pretty Woman
Shirley Valentine
The Full Monty
84 Charing Cross Road
Tootsie...
