Watching eat well for less and I just can't believe people actually spend 200+ a week on a food shop

One lady was giving a teen 20 a week to get chips and chicken 😟

We have 6 in our family

One baby
One toddler
One teen
Me and hubby
And a cat

I spend £65 a week including nappies and toiletries

This gose up to £90 during holidays and the teen is eating at home not collage

It's mad what are these people feeding there kids

My children have breakfast lunch and dinner I don't encourage grazing all day they can have fruit in between meals and I cook from sctrach pretty much 5 days a week junk on a Saturday then roast on a Sunday

Kateallison16 · 25/07/2016 00:42

AndNowItsSeven it's meant to say seed bread haha. My writing is a bit rubbish Wink

Dontyoulovecalpol · 25/07/2016 05:59

Katalison you are eating the same foods over and over though. And £50 a week- what about your toiletries/ booze/ cleaning products?

In today's shop being delivered I have-

A Tommy tippee nappy cannister (£15)
Nappies (£9)
Large washing powder (£8.99)
Shampoo and conditioner (£9)

That's not far off your £50 a week and no food. I can easily feed us- very well- for £50 but we buy things other than the basic meals and snacks in our weekly shop!

Dontyoulovecalpol · 25/07/2016 06:01

Oh and Saturday and Sunday you barely eat anything

MrsKoala · 25/07/2016 06:24

We had a takeaway curry on Friday for 2 adults and it was 28.60 (and 1 pound for 2 sachets of micro rice - i don't order the takeaway rice because it's 3 quid per portion). That was 1 chicken main, 1 lamb main, 1 cauli side dish and 1 naan (all the meat mains round here are about 10.95). So 30 quid for 2 of us. Chinese is a little cheaper and you get a set meal for 2 for 24 pounds - but we don't like it as much.

We then had dinner out Sat night and that was 100 quid and also lunch and dinner out yesterday which was about 100. I didn't cook or shop all weekend - it was bliss. Got to shop today tho as the cupboards are bare. Only porridge in for breakfast.

CakeNinja · 25/07/2016 07:52

We get our Chinese from here. If we get all the things we usually like, it's about £70 for the 2 of us although there are leftovers!

We live well and could easily afford to spend more. But I honestly wouldn't know what to spend it on?

Do you really believe that? Surely you could, if you wanted to, buy organic meat, organic veg, top of the range brand, artisan breads and cheese etc. You could shop at Waitrose, have veg box delivered etc.

I can understand people wanting/needing to stick to a strict budget but surely everyone can 'see' how you can easily spend a lot more money on food - if you want to and can afford to.

I spent £50 at a Food Festival last Friday just on a few bits and piece Blush.

I personally wouldn't dream of spending money on an expensive handbag or hair cut (I buy all my clothes from charity shops and get my hair done on model nights Grin) but I can understand how different people choose to spend their money differently.

stonecircle · 25/07/2016 08:17

But Katealison, your £50 a week is for 2 of you right? In our family of 5 (plus 3 dogs and 2 cats) we spend almost that on milk alone in one week.

But your £50 pw for 2 equates to £125pw for a family of 5. Make some of those big, forever hungry, sport playing teenagers and you'd easily get to £200 pw/£800 pcm or more.

dustarr73 · 25/07/2016 08:20

CakeNinja thats very expensive. There is a lovely chinese beside us and you get a main course with rice/chips plus 3 starters and a can of soft drink for €12.50

Lostbrokenandconfused · 25/07/2016 08:28

Why is this a problem? We spend that - butcher, waitrose - because we only eat free range organic meat, organic fruit and veg and I cook everything from scratch. I can't see why this would upset you - personally I can't understand how anyone can bring themselves to eat meat that isn't free range, but I wouldn't get cross about it!

AYD2MITalkTalk · 25/07/2016 08:39

Hello there CakeNinja! I've walked past that restaurant/takeaway and wondered what is like in there Grin I'm guessing you live in one of those £1.5m houses nearby - I've walked on your personal grass verge outside your enormous gates where there is no pavement MUAHAHAHAHA!

Marynary · 25/07/2016 08:48

I've just worked out how much we spent last month (for the first time) and it was £130 a week. That is less than I would have guessed but it would be really easy to up the amount to £200 a week just by eating organic meat (rather than free range) and organic veg/fruit, eating more expensive fish, better quality wine, buying lunch at work and a takeaway once a week.

AYD2MITalkTalk · 25/07/2016 08:48

Please let me come and see your beautiful house Grin

stonecircle £50 a week on milk for 5 people? What milk do you buy?
I'm assuming you don't buy the 4 pints for £1, otherwise you'd be consuming 40 pints of milk a week per person!

Even the Yeo valley at just under £2 for 2 litres would have you buying 25 bottles a week. Does everyone in your family really drink that much milk? 10 litres/17 pints a week?

Am I mis-understanding something? :)

stonecircle · 25/07/2016 09:21

I buy organic milk which is just under £2 per 4 pint carton. We get through at least 3 of those a day (19 and 17 year old ds drink one carton each)

drspouse · 25/07/2016 09:25

We have our milk delivered and even when we got organic whole milk for DD to drink as she was under 2 (and DH drinks milk as a drink though DS and I don't but we all have it on cereal) it was only £10 a week got four of us.

feelingdizzy · 25/07/2016 09:34

I have been really poor, at one stage £30 a week for food when my kids were small.I now have enough money ,and a bit more,it gives me great pleasure to buy decent food. Also now my kids are teens, they easeast a huge amount.I don't spend 200,but I could no problem.

mrsvilliers · 25/07/2016 09:37

I would think I spend around that for 2 adults and 2 dc (5 and 2) on a big shop, veg box and top ups. Like Lostbrokenandconfused all animal produce is organic and most veg. I'm sure I could get it cheaper but I have no interest in eating lower welfare animal produce. I have to say I am Shock at pp spending £50 a week for 2, I think I spent more than that when I was living by myself. Don't you ever go out?! Buy a shove in the oven pizza express pizza on the way home?

tangerino · 25/07/2016 09:37

I find these threads really interesting. Love seeing what different people eat. We once got someone else's Ocado order delivered by mistake and it was FASCINATING.

We spend loads- easily £200-300 a week, for family of 4 (kids 10 and 8). That includes expensive booze, lots of organic fruit and veg etc. Also extravagant things like whole beef fillet etc quite often. Yum. I think we could do it much more cheaply, obviously, but would struggle on some of the v low budgets on this thread- as others have said, it depends where you live (farmers market here means expensive artisan luxury stuff, not bargains).

I would far rather eat well all year than have an extra holiday for a week. Only thing I feel bad about is when things get wasted- I have a bad habit of buying bagged salads and letting them turn to slurry in the fridge. Need to go back to proper whole lettuces which last much better.

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 25/07/2016 09:38

Were a family of 3 and spend that a month , sometimes less but i do make most things from scratch and encourage eating fruit for snacks so only buy small quantities of 'junk' food

mrsvilliers · 25/07/2016 09:38

Wine? Beer? Gin and tonics? Coffee???

Doggity · 25/07/2016 09:40

Those of you who can feed a family of 8 (including 3 bodybuilding teenage boys) on £39.78 per week, do you include toiletries and general cleaning products? Sanitary products and nappies, even the own brand ones, are not cheap. I shop around for deals on toilet rolls and various other cleaning products but still, it adds up. I'm also curious if people buy coffees etc. Out of our shopping bill, we all take lunch to work and school. I don't buy hot or cold drinks at work but will take a can or two of Diet Coke.

Dontlikejam · 25/07/2016 09:46

We once got someone else's Ocado order delivered by mistake and it was FASCINATING.

Oh god I am such a saddo because I would love this!

We spend probably £150ish for three. Could get it down a lot but I have zero interest in doing so. Grew up poor (like having to collect the child allowance from the post office before going to the shop poor) and didn't have much money all through my twenties. No interest in recreating that now.

CakeNinja · 25/07/2016 09:48

TalkTalk I definitely have pavement Grin

Dontlikejam · 25/07/2016 09:48

Yes please, but let me finish breakfast first Grin
