Watching eat well for less and I just can't believe people actually spend 200+ a week on a food shop

One lady was giving a teen 20 a week to get chips and chicken 😟

We have 6 in our family

One baby
One toddler
One teen
Me and hubby
And a cat

I spend £65 a week including nappies and toiletries

This gose up to £90 during holidays and the teen is eating at home not collage

It's mad what are these people feeding there kids

My children have breakfast lunch and dinner I don't encourage grazing all day they can have fruit in between meals and I cook from sctrach pretty much 5 days a week junk on a Saturday then roast on a Sunday

Rinceoir

I was going to ask you if you are on a Paleo diet?
Your meals sound lovely and much like me and dh have to find for his health.
Would you share where you get ideas or recipes please?

Grittyshunts · 24/07/2016 22:14

dontyoulove looking at the photo earlier that's about right!! Lol Grin

Dontlikejam · 24/07/2016 22:15

Spent my childhood eating overcooked meat with overcooked salty veg

Pretty sure we are twins. I'd never survive in one of those houses where Monday means pork chop and Tuesday means sausages.

Grittyshunts · 24/07/2016 22:17

AYD2 it definitely depends where you live! Ooh fancy fish and chips now!! Hmm

Grittyshunts · 24/07/2016 22:18

dontlikejam and ALWAYS fish on a bloody Friday! That's my mum! She's still the same lol

dustarr73 · 24/07/2016 22:21

DontyouloveCalpol they do round here .Im in Dublin.Your rice or chips are included in teh price.Slight extra for fried rice or noodles.

Dontyoulovecalpol · 24/07/2016 22:28

Well they're not here, we wouldn't have been buying the special fried rice if they had included rice anyway Hmm and my Chinese doesn't sell chips.

Rinceoir · 24/07/2016 22:29

gilly I'm not on any particular diet plan but have lost a lot of weight this year (just under 4 stone) so have adjusted some of my old recipes and been trying out new ones!

I get recipes from all over- books/online/make some up. I've got a lot from an Irish website called littlegreenspoon- it's gluten free (I'm not but my SIL and best friend have coeliac disease and cook for them a lot- I've tried the recipes then kept making them!). I also make some Jamie Oliver recipes, also BBC good food, and keep clippings from newspapers etc if I like the look of it and adjust to my own tastes.

Dontlikejam we had 4 meals on an endless loop when I was a child! DHs parents are even more predictable- they even boil potatoes when they get a takeaway!

onecurrantbun1 · 24/07/2016 22:31

Chippy tea for 5 adults would be about £15 if just a couple of us were having fish and the others had sausages / fish cake as is usual. Chinese £25 ish but we don't have starters etc - that'd be perhaps 4 mains, rice, prawn crackers. 2 large pizzas (Dominoes / Pizza Hut) and a couple of sides c. £20. East Midlands so appreciate the cost of living is pretty low

Grittyshunts · 24/07/2016 22:35

rinceoir they boil potatoes to go with their takeaway?? ConfusedGrin lol

Dontlikejam · 24/07/2016 22:37

Yep fish on a Friday. Breaded cod. Can't touch the stuff.

Did your mum's have hostess trollies (to ensure salty boiled veg could then sweat in its own steam for a while?)

Dontlikejam · 24/07/2016 22:39

I have a special book where I write down the meals for the week. I'd cringe but I love it i have special pens

ColinFirthsGirth · 24/07/2016 22:40

I think £200 is alot tospend each week. I never spend more than £100 a week for my family - two adults one of which does a huge amount of cycling and two teenagers. £800 a week would take up most of my husband's full time wage so we definitely wouldn't be able to afford that. I imagine in Sainsburys or Waitrose you could get to £200 without to much difficulty.

gillybeanz · 24/07/2016 22:40

That explains alot Rinceoir

My dh has gone gluten free, not sure he was intolerant but also is nightshade free for medical reasons.
We used to eat all manner of rubbish, I still do tbh, but he has lost about 4 stone, in a short space of time.
His health has really improved though so specialist is over the moon and using him as a case for other patients.
You must be really healthy.

WankersHacksandThieves · 24/07/2016 22:40

Chippie round here is generally £20-£25 for 4, regardless of whether it's fish or something else. If we have fish we usually order a small fish so that's about the same as sausage or whatever. If you add in mushy peas or curry sauce then you are looking at the high end or over.

Chinese or Indian is £35-45, Pizza is around £30 but i really grudge that so rarely do it.

Grittyshunts · 24/07/2016 22:45

Wow! wankers that's really expensive!! We get 3 15" pizzas for £21!! Not Dominos though but still just as nice! dontlikejam I have a meal planner book too!! Lol and no hostess trolley but salt and lots of it! Confused

LunaLoveg00d · 24/07/2016 22:48

A whole chicken for 2.39? Two breasts for 1.59?

I got a whole chicken for £1.39 last week. It was reduced to clear and had previously been almost £6. I don't ever routinely see chicken for less than about £4.50.

Rinceoir · 24/07/2016 22:53

gilly I suppose a lot of my meals have a paleo slant as I tend to go a bit mad with simple carbs but I haven't cut them out at all. I will have roast potato occasionally, or bread stuffing (with my roast dinner- but only one or the other and only once a week or so). I'll make a gravy Saturday too. When I eat out I eat whatever I fancy then pull it back during the week. I snack on fruit/dates/nuts.

I make more carby/buttery/creamy sides for DH and DD (she's only 2 but very slight so need to feed her up).

Gritty they really do have potato with takeaway! dontlikejam thankfully we didn't have the hostess trollies, we escaped that!

WankersHacksandThieves · 24/07/2016 22:54

If we want take away pizza we go to Sainsburys and they do then to order and cooked for about £6 for a large pizza but obv needs to be ordered, waited on etc and taken home. We've only recently got pizza hut/dominoes. If we order in pizza for the kids because we are out then even on a deal it's around £20+ for the two of them.

BeJayKayven · 24/07/2016 23:04

For some reason dominos pizza upsets my stomach and I find them very very salty. Occasionally we phone and order a Costco pizza giganticus if we have people coming - great with some beers and wine 😄

For takeaways we usually have Chinese £25 - £30 for 3 adult meals, Indian about the same.

Farmmummy · 24/07/2016 23:09

About 300per month plus nappies but we are a veg farm so don't buy any veg and one of our workers also sells fruit and often gives us any left so don't often have to buy that. That said I do work from home and do all our own cooking and baking from scratch

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/07/2016 00:02

It's easily done if have the money but amazes me that they don't relise how much they spend

I love ewfl and always makes me laugh When they state they Know their brands and say their normal brand is Rubbish (coke this week) and then a cheaper version is def their usual brand (beer this week)

DF and I prob spend £60 a week but then also go to butchers maybe once a month and spend £50/60 on mince / chicken /ribs /steak etc and freeze - plus have CHINESE takeaway least once a week that is maybe 22/25 so shopping butcher and takeaway is prob heading up to £100 a week

Some brands are nice - some cheap stuff is nice - tinned toms tho can't be value as too bland and watery

And yes love spag Bol and either use a jar dolmio is nice but also love lidls own Bol sauce and half the price - or make own and use tinned toms - Tom purée - veg - stock cube and simmer

Kateallison16 · 25/07/2016 00:10

For me, DP and our beloved cat:
We spend £200 a month or less.
meal plan attatched from my planner

Have fresh smoothies every morning,
Always porridge and berries if wanted.
Healthy lunches of meats and salads on seeded breads.
Dinners are all made from scratch and balanced (Jambalaya, spicy pork, stir fry)
Snacks there's always snack a jacks, Musli bars, yoghurt and fruit.

We buy plenty of name brands and finest ranges. Always a fridge well stocked with smoothies and fruit juice too.

Our cat eats very well, only has the best brands of foods and also healthy treats.

This amount also includes toiletries and household items too.

More info
We live well and could easily afford to spend more. But I honestly wouldn't know what to spend it on?
We live down south so average food prices, I shop at tesco. Enjoy cooking fresh meals with varied meats and veggies.

I would love to hear what you ladies are spending 800+ a month on food wise.
Makes me wonder if I am leaving off something essential haha.

To wonder if people actually spend 200+ on a weekly shop
38cody · 25/07/2016 00:15

I really don't know what we spend - got Chinese takeaway tonight ( takeaway once a week costs about £60-£70 but there are 6 of us in central London) Guessing food&toiletries Bill is around £300 per week.
Went for pizza in the week (4 of us) that was £115
Food shopping plus takeaway plus eating out - £500 week - not unusual for working family in London I think.

seasidesally · 25/07/2016 00:37

blimey if i cook mince and there's to much fat i either mop excess with kitchen roll or drain in a colander, never wash it with water, that takes all the flavour away and well thats just common sense i would f thought

i once had a lodger and she used to cook the mince by boiling in water was bloody tastless and didnt seem right but her friend said she used do the same, they were from the North of England so maybe a northern way
