I've just seen a competition down the side of the page on here for a 'Portable Soother Steriliser'. Unless your baby is immunocompromised, don't most parents just give a dropped dummy a quick suck to remove any grit and then hand it back to their DC?

Why would you put something that's been on the floor in your own mouth?Confused

And yes, I carried a selection of sterilised dummies with me for the one of my babies who needed to constantly suck.

I didn't do it because that's how tooth decay bacteria is passed on to babies and I preferred DD not to have that bacteria so soon. They're very big on dental hygiene for children where I live and I was warned by the midwive and the dentist to not do that.

I just stuck the dummy under the hot tap for a little bit. It got sterilised about once a week, if that. I didn't mind floor germs getting in her mouth, they won't rot her teeth but my mouth germs will (I have terrible teeth)

Lweji · 23/07/2016 15:21

I just wash it under a tap or with the water from the bottle I'm likely to carry with me, or put the dummy away.
DS wasn't so keen on the dummy anyway.
I used to carry a spare, anyway.

I wouldn't put a wet dummy that fell on the street in my mouth, no. Bleurgh.

sklooshy · 23/07/2016 15:25

My is clearly in the gutter, not the topic I expected either.

I am guilty of sniffing and sucking too. Grin

sklooshy · 23/07/2016 15:26

Mind* that was supposed to say

VenusRising · 23/07/2016 15:30

I think with precious first borns it goes like this:
Sterilise everything! Carry a mini arsenal of sterilised duplicates in ginormous bags.

With the second:
Pick it up off the floor and rinse it or suck it if it looks a bit crumby.

With the third:
Get the older kids to pick it up and give it a brush off or a lick, and pop it back into baby

With the fourth:
Get the kids to wrestle it off the dog and give it back to the baby.

With the fifth:
Let the baby share it with the dog, and also use anything she finds under the kitchen counters from baby number four.

oldmums · 23/07/2016 15:33

oh no, never sucked the dummy, always had a few in a case to keep clean, then as they got older dummy for bed time only.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 23/07/2016 15:35

A third of adults have thrush in their mouths.

Just saying...

notamummy10 · 23/07/2016 15:36

Well this thread isn't what I thought it would be haha!

NicolaMarlowsMerlin · 23/07/2016 16:04

Never sucked and put back in. Tried to avoid dropping by having clips etc., and always had a spare. As they got older would rinse w water and then give it back. Reason to avoid sucking was that dentist told us best way to avoid children getting cavities was to not transfer the bacteria that cause tooth decay to their mouths. So we didn't ever share drinks, suck dummies, share cutlery etc. So far so good and they are cavity free at 9 and 7. Only 9 more years to go until it becomes unlikely they will ever need fillings.....

AStreetcarNamedBob · 23/07/2016 18:21

Yuck!! No I would wash it

ParadiseCity · 23/07/2016 18:24

That South Park song about Chef's chocolate salty balls is fixed in my head now.

Put em in your mouth and suck em!

VictoriaRoses · 23/07/2016 18:27

You can get special wipes got dummys

HoneyDragon · 23/07/2016 18:33

Can't you just give them the cork from your bottle of Prosecco or a Milky Bar if the dummy is dirty?

TheCrumpettyTree · 23/07/2016 18:33

Yuck, I would never clean a dummy by putting it in my mouth. I either wiped them or ran them under a tap.

singleandfabulous · 23/07/2016 18:35
