I've just seen a competition down the side of the page on here for a 'Portable Soother Steriliser'. Unless your baby is immunocompromised, don't most parents just give a dropped dummy a quick suck to remove any grit and then hand it back to their DC?

baby's mouth

Callico · 23/07/2016 13:17

Yabu that it's about dummies Grin

Binkermum29 · 23/07/2016 13:18

Give it to a dog to lick. Their saliva is said to be sterile.

OvO · 23/07/2016 13:21

With my eldest I would get him a new dummy every time, which over time did evolve to just sooking it.

With my youngest it was straight to sucking the fluff off! Grin

Beeziekn33ze · 23/07/2016 13:22

Binker - and their bums?!

Blankiefan · 23/07/2016 13:22

I always had a dozen on the go - spare ones in the car, change bags, handbags, pockets, etc

We sterilised all of them every evening.

There are so many things we overdid. I am now wiser but also wise enough not to have a 2nd so I am a fountain of learned wisdom that's destined to never be used.

gamerchick · 23/07/2016 13:24

And i thought this would be a different thread

Well we know where some of your minds reside Grin (I thought the same)

OvO · 23/07/2016 13:24

Id never have used a baby wipe as I don't like the idea of them sucking whatever crap they put in wipes.

My germs were much more preferable. Grin

I expect most parents do it at one time or another but it is pretty grim to watch!

Bit like sniffing their bum to find out if they've done a poo. Revolting but we've all done it!

My health visitor warned me not to do this (I hadn't actually asked her or considered it, btw).

GoblinLittleOwl · 23/07/2016 13:40

WHAT? Revolting.
But then, dummies are revolting.

NeedACleverNN · 23/07/2016 13:41

Dummies are not revolting Hmm

Get off your high horse. They are an essential tool needed for some babies.

Arf

Which bit are you grating? The image of a random woman's fanjo or the part where she's bent like a dog frantically licking it?

DP used to just suck it. I was too squeemish, I'd always have a tub with five or six dummies in wherever we went! Grin

squiggleirl · 23/07/2016 14:20

I dunno. I mean there's nothing in my house I look at when it's dropped on the floor and think, 'Oh that's dirty. Do you know what'd make that clean enough to use again? A swill around in my saliva.' Absolutely nothing.

I can't ever imagine having my MIL around for dinner, dropping her fork on the floor, and as I pick it up, giving it a good lick, cos that makes it cleaner. And if I wouldn't do that to my MIL, why would I do it to my kids, who I actually like?

I've 3 kids who all loved their soothers. I have spent years carting cleaned and sterilised soothers around, and if I had #4, would do the same. We even had a little microwave steriliser for soothers - it was great. Licking dodies and giving them to kids is just ick.

QueenArseClangers · 23/07/2016 14:58

I've never used dummies for my 5DC but did see an dummy invented where if it was dropped it had a case closed round it before it hit the ground? Sounds like a good idea.

NatureCreatesFreaks · 23/07/2016 15:02

Neither of mine had dummies so never had this problem... Thank goodness!

Libitina · 23/07/2016 15:03

Yep, definitely done that. Makes sense at baby group etc as it could be any of a dozen babies.
