AIBU to spend £300 on a hairdryer!?

lalaland1985 · 22/07/2016 20:49

I am lusting over the dyson hairdryer. I do have long hair that I have to wash and blow dry daily so if i calculated it as cost per use im sure its economical! (can you tell im trying to convince myself)

Has anyone bought one? Is it worth the extra money? Will i notice a huge difference from my babyliss one? Its my birthday soon and i keep leaving the page open on the John Lewis website for DH to see!

Yanbu

I ordered one just yesterday after a recommendation from friends. If you can afford it why the hell not?

SpaceKablooie · 22/07/2016 23:30

Thanks Eats, I'd love one.

AmberNectarine · 22/07/2016 23:59

Oh yeah, the 'get a cheap one and give to charity' posts are bullshit.

OP is well within her rights to spend her money on whatsoever she sees fit. As outlined above, I don't think I'd get the necessary value out of a £300 hairdryer, so I won't get one. £300 pair of shoes/bag, however? No qualms. The hairdryer is undoubtably of more practical value and will be used more often, so who's the fool?

We all have relative luxuries. Having these luxuries and charitable giving are not mutually exclusive, but it would be a very parsimonious life to give away every spare penny and possess only the most basic essentials. A life of martyrdom is not for me.

Also, luxury goods consumers contribute heavily to the global economy. Worth remembering.

WaitrosePigeon · 23/07/2016 00:02

Oh piss off Frances you bore.

lalaland1985 · 23/07/2016 00:26

Just thought - I have about £700 of John Lewis vouchers left from my wedding gifts. I think it would be rude not to order one!

Waitrose - I think you summed up my overly lengthy post on that matter very eloquently Grin

WaitrosePigeon · 23/07/2016 01:09

Yes, I was a little direct there Grin

I'm just sick of the constantly offended arseholes on here recently. Get a fucking life.

primitivemom · 23/07/2016 01:33

Another hairdresser here... Parlux I'd say is the best. But I'd bloody love to try one of these Wink

Well it's your money but I'd want a share in the company for that.

KoalaDownUnder · 23/07/2016 02:12

Bahahaha @ WaitrosePigeon

OP, there is no way I could justify the expenditure on my current budget (plus I have a Parlux), BUT if you can - YANBU!

My Dyson V6 Animal is life-changing. It feels beautiful to use and I actually love doing a chore I used to hate saddo

Paying top dollar for items you use daily is nearly always worth it. I don't care what anyone says.

(And re: the 'give the money to charity' comments - does that apply to everyone who spends money on: a luxury car, a cleaner, manicures, weekly takeaways, facials/spa days, iPads, and Sky/Foxtel? Because I don't buy any of those, and the money I save more than pays for very good quality versions of things that add value to my life. So, erm, fuck off!)

NobodyInParticular · 23/07/2016 02:23

Eats can I derail a bit by asking about your Dyson fan? Is it the newest AM09 hot and cold or the earlier AM05? I desperately want it, but please can you convince me why I need it instead of a £40 one? Smile

Also, if I have it about 1.5- 2 metres away from me, will it be strong enough to keep me cool at night when the temp can get to 30+ degrees upstairs yet quiet enough for me to sleep?

FrancesNiadova · 23/07/2016 06:02

The question posed was,"AIBU to spend £300 on a hairdryer."
Well I think yes, YABU.
Here's why...
"To achieve sustainable development and a higher quality of life for all people, states should reduce and eliminate unsustainable patterns of production and consumption." (Principle 8. The Rio declaration on environment and development 1992).
Now, it has been proved that purist anti-consumerism doesn't work. Whilst rich westerners donating their clothes to charities that re-distribute them to the developing economies fills a short term need and negates the need for another landfill site, it does not plough income back into that economy like the people buying affordable clothes made in their own county would do.
The necessities of getting to work, putting food on the table, buying what we need, all help to drive our economy in a steady way; it is good for the job prospects of both the rich and the poor. However, this rapacious acquisitiveness, the whole, "After seeing the ad on TV, I became desperately aware of my need for an electric armadillo," mindset just adds to the problems of world poverty and environmental destruction.
So yes, I think that it is unreasonable to spend £300 on a hairdryer.

WaitrosePigeon · 23/07/2016 06:36

And we don't give a shit, thank you and goodbye.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 23/07/2016 06:54

OP you have BEAUTIFUL hair Envy

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 23/07/2016 07:05

FrancesNiadova you haven't answered the question posed by a PP. Do you always buy the very cheapest version of everything and then donate the money to charity? If not, you are a hypocrite. The OP wasn't asking for moral judgement on how she spends her money, she was asking whether the Dyson is worth the extra money.

OP, if buying a device that saves you time makes your life easier, then go for it. I have very short hair partly because i can't afford the time in the mornings to deal with long hair. If I had long hair and there was a dryer which cut down the drying time then I would buy it like a shot.

SabineUndine · 23/07/2016 07:06

I'll be honest, if I had £300 to spare, I'd go to Paris for the weekend. Don't think I'd fill Mr Dyson's pockets

MollyTwo · 23/07/2016 07:11

Frances , you sound like a miserable bore with that pile of BS you just spouted. Go get a life. Op enjoy your hairdryer! Might look into getting one myself. You have gorgeous hair btw.

SpaceKablooie · 23/07/2016 07:18

Eats, I also have anther question about your Dyson fan Smile - does it actively cool the air, or do they just say cooking because it's a fan?

SpaceKablooie · 23/07/2016 07:19

Ahem Grin, ^cooling

DurhamDurham · 23/07/2016 07:34

Blimey op only wants a hair drier, a tad more expensive than some other brands but still just a hair drier.

MsJamieFraser · 23/07/2016 07:35

Frances YABU, she did not ask for your judgement BS, or your idiotic moral hypocrite BS.

I hope you preach what you state!

Heatherbell1978 · 23/07/2016 07:57

faster yes keratin straightening is amazing. For me it didn't straighten it as such but removed the frizz and made it so much more manageable. If your hair is anything like mine though you'll need the treatments that you need to keep in for 3 days rather than the wash in wash out ones which aren't as good. You can't do it if you're pregnant though and it's expensive!

GipsyDanger · 23/07/2016 08:33

FrancesNiadova · 23/07/2016 08:45

Thank you for all the personal insults.
I am more than happy to stand, a lone voice, against you.
I was being a tad facetious yesterday evening, I admit, and as I stated in my post earlier on with the example of donated clothes, it isn't the best long-term option.
Isn't it interesting that the 1 voice who finds a £300 hairdryer so wrong, is subjected to such personal abuse. I most certainly shall not stoop to that level. I shall put to you an alternative opinion.
We are conditioned to believe that we must have that latest whatever, that somehow it will make us a better person, make our lives happier.
In a world of limited resources and global poverty, a system that tells us what we buy equates with our personal we'll-being, economic progress and social fulfilment, is a recipe for disaster.
Anyone who challenges this very aggressively marketed view of success, questions the mass view of what success is and their core values, which reflect this consumer driven ideology.
For me, getting back to, "AIBU to buy a £300 hairdryer," this is against my core values. Such excessive consumerism is against all that I believe in. So my answer is, "yes, YABU."
The aggression which supports the, "You are what you buy," mind set is also completely beyond my comprehension.
