Dogs on buses near babies

Just to be clear, this isn't a goady thread about dogs and I don't hate dogs. Interested in others opinions as I have to take the bus daily!

I think owners should keep them away from prams and only take them on buses if there's plenty of space! AIBU?

Today, coming back from a long walk at a local beauty spot, someone plonked their husky-type dog right next to DS in his pram (pram was in the area with fold-up seats, 2 other prams opposite). As dog was on eye level with 10-month DS I asked him to move the dog. He assured me dog 'won't hurt him' but I said I'd rather not take the risk thanks, especially as DS will try to grab anything furry and interesting. He reluctantly moved dog into the aisle, where it meandered around on the end of a long lead, sniffing people and getting in everyone's way.

I've had similar with someone's dog licking my ankle on the bus, owner didn't seem to think it mattered Confused

Did I overreact or AIBR to think dogs should be kept on a short lead on buses, sitting next to their owner, away from babies/small children?

Jesus I've been reading this thread like this Shock

Right so you were on the bus first dog comes and "plonks" itself next to you with the owner. If the dog had have been on the bus first would you have
A. Got on the bus and sat next to the dog as that's the only available space for your pram.

B. Got on and demanded the dog owner get off or move

C. Waited for the next bus to avoid any hassle

Surely if you have a problem with something it's upto you to move or get off the bus? That dog owner has as much right to be on there as you do. You also can't really complain that it was in the way of the Isle either after you've asked him to move where is it supposed to sit? The owner obviously sat in the bay because to dog is big, it isn't going to fit behind a seat or be able to sit on one.

Why should dogs be banned from buses because you don't like them or want them near you? Hmm You are an adult, get up and move or get off. I can't say I'm fond of screaming children and babies on buses but I figure it's something I have to deal with sometimes if I want to get the bus.

Tell you want else I have to deal with, children coming upto my ON LEAD dogs and fussing them when out on walks (without them or their parents asking whether I'd mind or whether the dogs are ok) because they are "little and cute" so obviously can't be snappy or nasty Hmm fortunately for me and those children they aren't, might be a different story with a nervous dog.

I suggest everyone keeps their children on a short lead or teaches them to ask before they pet strange dogs. Grin

Firstly, I have German Shepard puppy and I am a mom to to DC. My dog is amazing.with children and has the patience of a saint. However, there is absolutely no way I would allow her to go ANYWHERE a baby. In fact, she goes out in public with a muzzle not because she bites but because its responsible.

NavyandWhite but then how will people be able to warn others of all these nasty wild animals that may bite their children to death otherwise Grin

NeedACleverNN · 23/07/2016 15:58

The only dog that should be muzzled is a legal pit bull, an ex racing greyhound due to little dogs and other furries and an aggressive dog. I also think that people aggressive dogs need walking on private land. Dog aggressive dogs are fine in public just need muzzling

I have a Labrador puppy, we use buses a lot. Being a Typical Labrador, she loves attention and being a puppy she gets a lot of attention. I wouldn't sit her near a baby on a bus. Not because I think she would bite but because she would no doubt try to lick the baby and I would not want her to do that! My pup loves kids/adults anyone that looks as if they will give her a pat.

I apologise if she licks people but most people say its fine. I get that not everyone likes this. But dogs should not be banned from public transport.

Same here Navy

I also can't abide fabric muzzles that don't allow dogs to pant properly. If you have to muzzle, it must be a basket muzzle and not a fabric one

HerRoyalFattyness · 23/07/2016 16:06

Get the dog biting into some perspective please!

There are some men that rape. Does that mean that I have to view all males as potential rapists?

According to some on here yes. All males are potential rapists and you should fear for yourself anytime you are in the presence of a male.

coco your poor dog. I had a GSD. He was never muzzled. He didn't need to be. He wasn't aggressive.

Greyhounds are used to them. Especially racing hounds. They are terrors to small furries because of the lure they chase. Some become tolerant to cats and other small dogs but often most ex racers can't be around them. Muzzle protects the cats and dogs

candykane25 · 23/07/2016 16:10

Just for general info. Sometimes a guide dog is muzzled but that's because it eats everything in sight and it's for its own safety. Mine isn't.

I am disgusted by many many things. A dog lick isn't one of them. If a dog luck happens you can use soap and wife to wipe the skin just like you would wash your hands after taking a shit if you are afraid that dog has been licking its genitals.
Never seen CandyDog lick her bits yet though. She's groomed everyday and has all her jabs and tablets and her health is clis kY monitored.
Obviously a responsible dog owner doesn't encourage their dog to lick but it's really not a massive problem that can't be dealt with quick and efficiently by the lickee should this random incident occur.

candykane25 · 23/07/2016 16:12

Soap and wife! Most hilarious autocorrect ever!
Please don't use your wives :)

SurfBored73 · 23/07/2016 16:12

Navy, you're still here seven hours later defending the indefensible. And have the temerity to call the ignorance card when all you have done is ignore the sound and valid opinions of other people and all the evidence presented to you this morning. Obtuse? Just a bit. Seriously idiotic.

NeedACleverNN · 23/07/2016 16:13

Ah yes muzzling to stop scroungers! Yes that's another one that needs doing. Especially if the dog had allergies that need to be controlled by diet

candykane25 · 23/07/2016 16:13

Indefensible?

NeedACleverNN · 23/07/2016 16:14

Isn't it undefendable?

HerRoyalFattyness · 23/07/2016 16:14

I understand that some dogs are muzzled for reasons other than aggression, but to muzzle a dog just because you can like coco upthread is upsetting to me.

HerRoyalFattyness my GSD isn't aggressive either, but like all dogs she has the potential to be. She is an animal after all. If I think a muzzle is needed in a certain situation, then I will use it. She's not bothered by it, it comes off as soon as it is possible. She's not deprived of water etc. She's an amazing dog, spoilt rotten. She's currently lay on a three seater sofa while I am sat on the floor. Hardly a poor dog.

HerRoyalFattyness · 23/07/2016 16:21

Of course it's poor dog. She has no reason to be muzzled. How would you like it if someone handcuffed you. You weren't being aggressive and hitting anyone, but you have the potential to.
