Dogs on buses near babies

Just to be clear, this isn't a goady thread about dogs and I don't hate dogs. Interested in others opinions as I have to take the bus daily!

I think owners should keep them away from prams and only take them on buses if there's plenty of space! AIBU?

Today, coming back from a long walk at a local beauty spot, someone plonked their husky-type dog right next to DS in his pram (pram was in the area with fold-up seats, 2 other prams opposite). As dog was on eye level with 10-month DS I asked him to move the dog. He assured me dog 'won't hurt him' but I said I'd rather not take the risk thanks, especially as DS will try to grab anything furry and interesting. He reluctantly moved dog into the aisle, where it meandered around on the end of a long lead, sniffing people and getting in everyone's way.

I've had similar with someone's dog licking my ankle on the bus, owner didn't seem to think it mattered Confused

Did I overreact or AIBR to think dogs should be kept on a short lead on buses, sitting next to their owner, away from babies/small children?

Yanbu. A lot of people forget that not everyone likes their dog. I'd be fuming if a dog licked me.

IHateDoors · 22/07/2016 19:19

It would be incredibly unfair on people who can't drive to say dogs can't use public transport. Horrible unfair!

IHateDoors · 22/07/2016 19:20

*Horribly. Damn phone!

Farmmummy · 22/07/2016 19:21

As someone with 2 DC and 4 dogs none of which have been on a bus btw my mind boggles at the thought (that's the dogs not the DC lol) I don't think ybu. My Dd2 is 16 months and loves dogs but would automatically want to reach out and touch and although a dog lover myself I wouldn't want someone else's that near DC or indeed mine near anyone else's kids in case of something unexpected.

honkinghaddock · 22/07/2016 19:21

It is ok to let dogs lick people. You would be risking a meltdown with ds (who hates uninvited touching).

There was a time I could only get my dog to the vet on a bus.

He was much better behave than most children, and some adults.

YABU.

Propertyquandry · 22/07/2016 19:22

I wouldn't be happy at a dog licking my ankle. Most people would be grossed out at a person licking them yet we're supposed to find an animal licking us cute?

And small children grab all the time. My DD is very grabby and would almost certainly hurt a dog too close to her. Unless you can guarantee that dog wouldn't react aggressively then it's massively unreasonable to bring it onto a bus.

honkinghaddock · 22/07/2016 19:22

It is not ok

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 22/07/2016 19:23

Well, here's a novel suggestion - watch what she's doing.

Newes · 22/07/2016 19:23

Dog in the Op wasn't acting aggressively, Property.

mypropertea · 22/07/2016 19:24

People may "know there dog" and think it is fine. Witch is great if it is there kid. Unfortunately I don't know the people well enough to trust there judgement so I wouldn't want them too close. I probably would move my pram though.

Propertyquandry · 22/07/2016 19:24

Ok, I'll keep her on my lap and hold her hands if you do the same to your animal.

Lostwithinthehills · 22/07/2016 19:24

I have a terrier, if I took him on the bus or train it wouldn't occur to me to deliberately sit us away from a baby, I would just be looking for a space for both of us to fit. He would probably sit on my lap, so at around baby in a push chair height. I'm sensible, my dog is well behaved and he'd have a collar and lead on so if I reassured you that he wasn't going to lunge manically at a baby I would be really expect to be believed.

I'm fortunate enough to own a car these days but when I was younger I relied on public transport and regularly took my previous dog on buses and trains. I don't know how else I could have managed to visit my family who lived a couple of hours away, or how else I could have escaped from the, pretty dire, area I lived in to have a few hours walking my dog somewhere nice. I didn't ever have a problem.

harderandharder2breathe · 22/07/2016 19:24

If you think dogs should only be on not-busy buses then so should prams and pushchairs which take up far more space

Yes dog should be controlled, sounds like it was...

Yabu and overreacting

BlurryFace · 22/07/2016 19:25

If you need that much control over your's and your children's travelling conditions, learn to fucking drive. This is from a dog-owning, non-driving mum, BTW.

Newes, I didn't suggest the dog was aggressive. I was saying that animals can be unpredictable.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 22/07/2016 19:26

My dog's not going to grab your DD.
You are the one who said your child tends to grab.

Xmasbaby11 · 22/07/2016 19:27

Yanbu. I would be uncomfortable with that too.

SweetPea79 · 22/07/2016 19:27

I'm a dog lover but I don't trust my child with dogs, dog and child are mostly kept apart in my house. Until I can train my child to behave around dogs then I would not let him in arms distance, especially not with a dog that could not move freely away.

it also worries me that a lot of dog owners cannot tell the subtle signs of stress that prempt even a snarl or a growl.

ApostrophesMatter · 22/07/2016 19:27

On threads like this there are always a few odd people who think dogs are as important as people. As though there is some kind of equality.

They aren't and there isn't.

Dogs should always be kept away from people they don't know and a dog wandering around is out of the control of the owner.

PinkyPlumet · 22/07/2016 19:27

captain taxi?

amarmai · 22/07/2016 19:29

My gs is deathly allergic to dogs. So YANBU Op.
Waiting for someone to say their dog is deathly allergic to cc.
