Dogs on buses near babies

Just to be clear, this isn't a goady thread about dogs and I don't hate dogs. Interested in others opinions as I have to take the bus daily!

I think owners should keep them away from prams and only take them on buses if there's plenty of space! AIBU?

Today, coming back from a long walk at a local beauty spot, someone plonked their husky-type dog right next to DS in his pram (pram was in the area with fold-up seats, 2 other prams opposite). As dog was on eye level with 10-month DS I asked him to move the dog. He assured me dog 'won't hurt him' but I said I'd rather not take the risk thanks, especially as DS will try to grab anything furry and interesting. He reluctantly moved dog into the aisle, where it meandered around on the end of a long lead, sniffing people and getting in everyone's way.

I've had similar with someone's dog licking my ankle on the bus, owner didn't seem to think it mattered Confused

Did I overreact or AIBR to think dogs should be kept on a short lead on buses, sitting next to their owner, away from babies/small children?

Child owners can equally be awful for assuming that every person wants to hear their loud parenting or indulge their free spirited sweetheart running around the restaurant or smile repeatedly when their cherub kicks the back of the train seat for 30 constant minutes or listen to their boring story about whatever milestone their brat hit. Don't inflict your lifestyle choices on me and I will return the favour.

I second waitrose i wont put a muzzle on my dog as he is not an agressive dog and he would hate it as i tried a halti collar on and he would not walk. I appreciate there are people with allergies/phobias etc but why should good owners who care properly for their dogs have to muzzle them.

kali110 · 22/07/2016 23:31

PinkyPlumet because disabled people have loads of money to get taxis everywhere don't they Hmm

Lilacpink40 · 22/07/2016 23:31

I like well trained dogs, but I find some people are besotted with all of them. I wouldn't lick a stranger nor would I let my DCs lick a stranger, but the 'all dogs are angels' group think it's fine for dogs to do so.

Now dogs should have priority over small people on buses?

Seems so strange, I'm with OP.

kali110 · 22/07/2016 23:31

I'd rather be on a bus with a dog than some people.

hazeimcgee · 22/07/2016 23:34

christina where does it say on the post the dog paid? Or perhaps more likely the dog was paid for?

planeymcplaneface · 22/07/2016 23:35

Its not as if a dog walks down the street thinking oh i think ill lick so and so because they looked in my direction Hmm

hazeimcgee · 22/07/2016 23:38

Hmm my son probably does

I just knew when I came back to this we'd have had the 'all dogs should wear muzzles' crap. We just need someone to pipe up with a story about how their friendly family dog suddenly went for them one day.

It's really easy to stop your child grabbing a dog. That's what every responsible dog owning parent does 24/7. The idiots who don't are the ones who cause the accidents when 'our friendly dog attacked our dc unprovoked'. Obviously not including meeting someone like honkings ds in that where it's clearly not just lazy precious parenting.

Melfish · 22/07/2016 23:50

Do dogs still have to go upstairs on buses? Haven't seen many on buses recently but seem to remember a friend carrying her terrier up the stairs when I was a teenager.

kali110 · 22/07/2016 23:53

lurked yep this will blatantly turn into a dog slagging off thread.
Grin saying dogs shouldn't be on there.
I'm not a dog owner but take my pets on there when we go to the vet.
I can't drive i suppose the disabled people who need to take their dogs/pers anywhere will just have to use their vast amounts of cash to get a taxi everywhere Grin

Any dog can snap, they are animals, they don't have human reasoning. If their puppies misbehave they snap at them, why wouldn't they do the same with human puppies?

If dogs are tired/hot/irritable /off colour they can be grumpy just like the rest of us. However if we snap we need to apologise (unless we actually assault someone ), if they snap they could be put down. It is up to the owner to protect their dog from themselves. I don't fully trust my dogs with my 10 year old. I am constantly warning ds to be gentle with the dogs and wary if it is hot/they have a bone/they are excitable. I watch them like a hawk with any child, for both their sakes.

I've never encountered this level of dog hatred in real life. I don't take my dog on the bus, however if I was sat down with him and he was behaving, I wouldn't take kindly to being asked to move. If you are worried or allergic surely it's your responsibility to sit some where else?

WaitrosePigeon · 22/07/2016 23:59

Wild animal Grin

I knew it wouldn't be long for the hysterics to start.

BurningBridges · 22/07/2016 23:59

Lurked It's really easy to stop your child grabbing a dog - WTAF?! the baby is 10 months old!! In a pram where there is no room for the mum to move inbetween the dog and the baby!

Most dog owners control a dog/small baby situation by keeping the two a fair distance apart not crammed up against each other on a hot bus!

WaitrosePigeon · 23/07/2016 00:00

Bastard, people are only this nuts on MN. It doesn't happen in 'real' life.

planeymcplaneface · 23/07/2016 00:02

I sit in the wheelchair/pram bays with ddog if i have him on my own with no buggy but i move if a wheelchair or pram get on as its designated for them primarily

TheDuchyOfGrandFenwick · 23/07/2016 00:06

What's wrong with a muzzle? Confused

...and I absolutely do not hate dogs😔

WaitrosePigeon · 23/07/2016 00:07

Nothing is wrong with a muzzle in genuine circumstances.

What was funny was you suggesting all dogs regardless of their temperament should be muzzled at all times. How silly.

Liz09 · 23/07/2016 00:08

Kids are far more irritating in public than dogs. That's my opinion.

WaitrosePigeon · 23/07/2016 00:11

Yes I think we should muzzle all kids and babies.

Lurkedforever1 · 23/07/2016 00:20

burning if the dog is under control, and minding it's own business, then yes, of course it's up to the parent. What kind of prams are these babies in? So small and low sided a 10 month old can reach out and grab a dog, and yet so large the parent can't fit their arm down the side or turn it round? How does that work? And no, I didn't stop dd hurting dogs by keeping her at a distance at all times either. I just always kept my hand/ arm in the way till she could understand how to treat them.

duchy I'll muzzle my dogs just as soon as we start handcuffing all adults in public 'just in case'.
