To be worried that these random terrorist attacks are our new way of life?

Having just seen the news about another horrific attack at a shopping mall in Munich I can't help but feel that this is becoming a way of life from now on. Will it ever come to an end or is it just going to get worse and worse and something we are all going to have to live with. I find it so terrifying.
And as I'm typing this I can hear Donald Trump's acceptance speech for the presidential nomination on the news which makes the future seem even more terrifying. How can I stop living in fear of the future? I feel like taking my family and heading for the hills.

I suffer from anxiety and this is bothering me too OP.

No answer except to rationalise with perspective, keep on keeping on, and be vigilant.

Have to admit Laurie's comment made me 😂

UnexpectedBaggage · 24/07/2016 08:25

It is a small anxiety, just as the IRA attacks were. I'm a bit more aware on the tube etc but otherwise just live my life.

FruitCider · 24/07/2016 08:27

There have been 838 terrorist attacks so far this year. The world is unsettled, and will be for many years to come. But you cannot let fear rule your life. We are in relative safety in the UK. 90% of terrorist attacks take place in Muslim countries.

Any one of us could be ran over by a lorry tomorrow or get into a freak accident. Humans are not invincible.

VulpesVulpes · 24/07/2016 08:36

The Munich attack wasn't to do with religion or "terrorism". It was an 18 year old boy born and grew up in Munich who'd been bullied all his life, was a loner and was obsessed with reading about mass shootings, according to the local media here in Germany.

The police have consistently said there is no terrorism links in this case.

FoxesOnSocks · 24/07/2016 08:41

Yes that's true as well Vulpes Munich wasn't a IS. Random attack by people still occur.

I think the problem here is there's a clueless crowd who think 'northern Ireland' means IRA attacks in England.

TBH -and I'm not minimising- I think sometimes English people don't realise that the vast majority of deaths in the Troubles occurred in NI. The bombs and many scares in England in the 70s and 80s were awful but the numbers were very small in comparison.

One difference is that in NI/mainland attacks the perpetrators weren't suicide bombers. A bomb had to be placed/concealed somewhere.

Suicide bombers have much more opportunity and flexibility to wreak havoc.

And also what is very worrying are the "lone wolf" attacks, encouraged by internet hate-mongers. The idea of driving into groups of civilians is one that has been suggested, encouraged and applauded on the net. Even lone wolves need to acquire "inspiration" and of course weaponry from somewhere.

wigglesrock · 24/07/2016 09:24

Surferjet I have read some staggeringly naive and ridiculous comments on MN over the past 8 years but your past few posts are just showing you up - hopefully showing you up to be thick as opposed to offensive but I have my doubts.

Fuckyoucancer....... yes, you're right- I've noticed on MN in general but more pointedly over the past year a shocking disregard for NI in general.

TimeforaNNChange · 24/07/2016 09:28

Fruit, have you got a source for that figure? I'd be interested to know what the definition of "terrorist attack" is that has led to that number Confused

throwingpebbles · 24/07/2016 09:37

Shocked at the ignorance about NI being displayed on here Shock

Sending love and Flowers to all those affected.

Can only assume those making ignorant comments were too young to have lived through any of it.

doing · 24/07/2016 09:38

I smiled Laurie Smile

Agree it's what we got used to with the IRA. We were always having bomb scares at school and having to stand outside for an hour dressed in leotards

Ahhh the leotard. I miss it not....

Brandonstarkflakes · 24/07/2016 09:41

peachpudding you really are talking bollocks.

Its not racist to suggest that if you mix to many people together to fast who have different cultures then it will cause enormous problems and that is what we are seeing.

This statement shows that you have no understanding of 'what we are seeing'.

You sound like my dad - 'the IRA were never as bad as these guys'. Hmm If your innocent child was murdered in cold blood then I seriously doubt you would give a fuck about comparing which murdering group was 'worse'.

FFS.

Brandonstarkflakes · 24/07/2016 09:43

Oh.i wrote my post before I saw suferjets posts. WTAF'?!

doing · 24/07/2016 09:44

It's scary how quickly the Troubles and the IRA seem to have been normalised and forgotten. Terrifying in fact.

You're still many, many times more likely to be the victim of a terrorist attack if you're a) Muslim and b) in Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc so for this reason it really is "keep calm and carry on" in Europe.
