I just find her unnecessary and patronising. If I'm watching the news I really don't need someone to bla bla bla about how they interpret events. It's so patronising and irritating. I mean this evening Angela Merkel meets Theresa May. 'It's so important these two ladies get along and make a good impression' Laura informs us. Gee thanks, would you know it?
So irritating. AIBU ??

Yes Robert peston thing is called speakers for schools and looks very interesting

I think Laura seems good. I am glad she is not one of those plastic dolly women they have in America and on good morning Britain you know ridiculously even featured with plastic looking skin who seem to defer to the male presenter.

myownprivateidaho · 21/07/2016 06:42

I like her! And she is the BBC's political editor so some "bla bla bla about how she interprets events" is a pretty important part of her remit!

Flashbangandgone · 21/07/2016 06:48

I think she's good... Doesn't suck up to politicians and gets stuck in with tough questions.

As for her supposedly not liking Jeremy Corbyn, I'm assuming that's because she's asked him tough, probing questions (I.e. Done her job) and their reaction that tells you more about Corbyn and his supporters than it does about her!

As for her commentary, if you want the news entirely in embellished commentary, try the 2 minute news in the hour on Radio 4 - straight to the point and over before you know it.

Everytimeref · 21/07/2016 06:50

I cant stand her and do find her bias. A report yesterday concluded that the media in general including the BBC is very bias and anti Corbyn.

annandale · 21/07/2016 06:55

I like hearing from the political editor, I would so much rather hear any of them than from the politicians tbh. I was slightly shocked when someone on a thread aeons ago (about two weeks back) said that the EU referendum coverage or perhaps situation was male dominated - I'd only really been listening to Kuenssberg (sp) so it didn't feel like that to me. I like her writing and think her presenting style is very low-key, it doesn't feel like she dominates as a personality and that's right for the role I think.

Felascloak · 21/07/2016 06:58

I can't find that report every could you link it?
op I like LK, she's certainly no more annoying than any of their other editors. She's clearly been working very hard the last few weeks.

In general I find the reaction to women on TV quite illustrative of sexism in society. Not seen a thread like this about Nick Robinson or John Pienaar and LG is just as entitled to air her analysis of the political situation as they are.

Everytimeref · 21/07/2016 06:58

And I say that as some you is anti-Corbyn

Everytimeref · 21/07/2016 07:00
  • someone who is. Phone fail!
PaulDacreCuntyMcCuntFace · 21/07/2016 07:53

Agree with the PP about liking her 'sceptical resting face' Grin

It's nice to see someone who isn't fawning and brown-nosing politicians and takes their soundbites with a wheelbarrow pinch of salt.

absolutelynotfabulous · 21/07/2016 08:43

Anyhow, what's happened to Nick Robinson? Has been retired due to ill-health?

The coverage on the day Cameron left Downing Street with Simon McCoy and the other guy whose name I've forgotten was cringe worthy.

KingscoteStaff · 21/07/2016 09:00

Surely part of her job as Political Editor is to share her analysis of the news?

It was her predecessor Andrew Marr's analysis that first got me interested in politics. You need an insight into the background/secondary motivation of decisions and pronouncements to properly understand what is going on.

Otherwise we're back to "Is there anything you'd like to tell the nation, Prime Minister?" broadcasting.

redshoeblueshoe · 21/07/2016 09:03

Nick Robinson is now on the Today Programme, well I think he still is as I've stopped listening since he moved there

Felascloak · 21/07/2016 09:06

Yes he is and he has a tv show.
Tbh it drives me more mad that Nick/Andrew can be seriously ill in a way that affects their TV performances and still get plum presenting jobs (that's great and not at all my issue) and the women get sacked off once they are older. Can't imagine a female presenter being allowed to present a prime time show if she had the double whammy of being older and unwell. It is very sexist. Sorry a bit off topic.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 21/07/2016 09:09

She replaced Nick Robinson as BBC Political Editor (IIRC) and is the first woman to do the job. I think she gets stick that a man wouldn't. Nick Robinson used to do a much more patronising "I'll explain it to the viewers at home" spiel and is arguably more biased (used to be chair of the Young Conservatives).

redshoeblueshoe · 21/07/2016 09:17

Felas I agree with you, and I don't think its off topic. I am totally pissed off by some of the threads on MN such as Mark Carney - where posters are falling over themselves to say how much they want to shag him, instead of discussing what he is actually saying/doing. (Probably not the best example, as there were 2 threads about him, and I only looked at one)

Cherrypi · 21/07/2016 09:21

She's great to follow on Twitter. She gets a lot of scoops.

PollyPerky · 21/07/2016 09:21

I can't abide her.

Why?
Her voice grates. It's screechy and she has a very asymmetric face that she pulls into weird expressions. Nothing personal- just not good for a high profile TV presenter.

Her pronouncements come over as FACT. They aren't, they are simply her own opinions and interpretations of events.

She is no longer reporting the news, but giving her own slant on it and it therefore can't be impartial.

I just wish she'd go on holiday and give us all a break.

situatedknowledge · 21/07/2016 09:28

I find her right wing bias irritating, predictable and dull. I do wish Andrew Marr could come back.

FlattenedWhite · 21/07/2016 09:28

Surely part of her job as Political Editor is to share her analysis of the news?

Otherwise we're back to "Is there anything you'd like to tell the nation, Prime Minister?" broadcasting.

Exactly! I'd be very interested in what a news report that restricted itself to the recitation of verifiable facts, rather than analysis, narrative-making, speculation etc looked like.

And surely on Mumsnet we're waaay past the stage of disliking women on TV because of their faces and voices?

Modalverb1 · 21/07/2016 09:37

Felascloak - been thinking the same thing about Marr/Robinson

Redshoe - I cringe when MNETTERS mention a man in the public eye and announce 'I would' It's horrible when men say it about women but acceptable on MN for women to say it

Squills · 21/07/2016 09:41

I agree with KingscoteStaff ... 'Surely part of her job as Political Editor is to share her analysis of the news?'

I like her. She's clearly a very intelligent woman.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/07/2016 09:55

You don't need editorial - interpretation, insight, journalism? You just want politicians speaking for themselves? Ok.

But who would decide which politicians get how much airtime? Editors. Doh.

PollyPerky · 21/07/2016 10:53

My dislike of LK is not because she is a woman. What an odd comment to make! Surely being a woman doesn't mean I can't make negative comments about another woman?

I dislike her because of her screechy voice, her accent, and her contorted expressions. I'd say the same thing about a man and indeed use to hate Peston for the same reasons.

Being a presenter on TV or radio is not just about what you say, it's also how you say it and how you present it in terms of tone of voice, pitch, pronunciation, appearance etc. Or it used to be.

ginghamstarfish · 21/07/2016 10:59

I don't mind her, but these people should be unbiased. As for Robert Peston, I cannot bear to hear him and have to change channel or mute. He may be a perfectly nice guy but I don't understand how he gets these jobs - surely the ability to speak in a reasonably normal manner which does not distract enormously from what is being said is quite important for someone in this position?

BeJayKayven · 21/07/2016 11:05

I like her analysis and insight. I guess we can't all choose our face, accent etc but being highly intelligent and good at communicating is more important to me.
