Posting here for traffic as need some advice quickly. I'll try and keep it brief without drip feeding so please bare with me!
I'm 38+2 weeks. Last Tuesday my waters went whilst waking the dog. This is my
3rd child so I know what it was. As I got back to my car the gushing stopped and immediately my crippling sciatica went. As in just stopped suddenly. Baby had dropped and come off the nerve. I had a scan booked for 4.30 anyway to see if breach (she isn't) so I went home and cleaned up, changed underwear etc and headed off to hospital. When there they did a test (like a pregnancy test on a piece of paper in my vagina) to test for amniotic fluid. It came back negative to everyone's surprise. I didn't think much of it at the time but the midwife did comment that in the 6 months since the tests had been introduced she hadn't had a single positive. So they sent me home. I had mild contractions coming and going on Tuesday and Wednesday and nothing since.
Anyway I was due a sweep today with my usual midwife. I told her all the details about last week and she was shocked. Said that my hind waters had gone and should have been induced after 24 hours. Said she couldn't do a sweep and sent me straight to maternity day unit to get checked out. She talked about risk of infection being high as waters had gone and mentioned meningitis. I have been exposed to meningitis as I visited my friend on Tuesday and her newborn baby was diagnosed with it on Wednesday. I was Monitored in day unit and all Fine so they did the paper test for amniotic fluid. Again negative and 2 very surprised midwives. Then midwife says that she too has never had a positive in 6 months. So they proceed with the sweep and whilst I am on the bed my waters are literally filling the midwives hand. She can see and feel it coming from my cervix. So she happily repeats the test which comes back negative again. Now I'm no expert but I would say these are faulty or inaccurate tests. Seeing as for the last 6 months every woman passing through the doors thinking her waters have gone have been wrong. HmmGet chatting to some ladies in reception and two out of five are in same position. Waters have gone but they won't be believed as the test says not. So basically they have sent me home and I see a midwife next Wednesday for another sweep of nothing has happened. I asked for antibiotics as a precaution but can't have them as, my waters haven't gone! My midwife today was as frustrated as me but basically her hands are tied as despite her years of experience and eyewitness to the waters and me knowing myself, if that paper says no then that is that. So WWYD? I'm so worried about infection. My regular midwife said this morning I need to be firm and maybe I wasn't firm enough. It's been over a week since they first went and could be another week before I see anyone again. That's a long time of worrying. Does anyone else have experience of these tests? Do I just go back and insist on antibiotics as a minimum? For info baby is moving we'll and healthy in all aspects so it is just the risk of infection that is concern. Thanks if you got
This far!!

How awful!

Hope you get it sorted!

I had a positive from this test when my hind waters went x

blinkowl · 22/07/2016 01:51

Good luck OP. I agree refuse that test and ask they examine you otherwise.

GertrudeMoo · 22/07/2016 02:05

This is crazy! Hospital protocol is so random! I went for a checkuo on my due date after having strong bh contractions and they examined me and declared they could see "fluid" and therefore my waters had been "trickling out" and baby needed to be induced then and there as they had no idea how long my waters had gone. They didn't test the fluid at all. They assured me that it "could only be waters"...and stuck me on an antibiotic drip. Turned out not to have been my waters...
..however that was only after a failed induction (my waters really breaking...forward and hind) and an EMCS!
They were acting on a better to be safe than sorry attitude...but I think in your case when you and they can see/feel it actually leaking they should really be doing something about it!

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 22/07/2016 03:32

OP, telephone your hospital switchboard and ask to speak to the supervisor of midwives. They are the most senior midwife on duty that day and can help. They will have the experience and authority to question your management plan.

honeysucklejasmine · 22/07/2016 04:01

This is crazy. I was induced 24 hours after my waters went. Which was inconvenient as it was 5am. But hey. At least the ward was quiet.

I can't believe how you have been treated.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 22/07/2016 05:59

Good luck this morning.

6demandingchildren · 22/07/2016 06:56

Place marking to hear of babies arrival.

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 22/07/2016 09:00

Hope this morning goes ok! I don't suppose your hospital is ESH by any chance?

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 22/07/2016 17:21

Hope all is well and baby is safely on their way Grin

allowlsthinkalot · 22/07/2016 18:17

This happened to me with dc2. Waters went early and leaked on and off until she was born six weeks later. But test was negative so I was made out to be a liar and it was suggested I was weeing myself.

Fortunately dc2 had no problems whatsoever and some reading I did suggests that a tear in the amniotic sac doesn't carry the same infection risk. That could have been what happened.

Haven't rtft but have you had a scan to check fluid levels around the baby?

bumbleymummy · 22/07/2016 18:27

This all sounds awful and very stressful for you :( I hope things went better for you today Thanks

fizzingmum · 22/07/2016 20:00

Update, I was due in at 9.40. When I got up around 8am I felt a gush and my front waters went. I packed up my knickers and several soaked tiers to take with me to appointment. After all they said last time if I had kept the pad or knickers they wouldn't have had to check. I refused the test again following advice from here and asked for some old fashioned midwifery. The gushing onto the bed and finally I had some common sense. Midwife witnessed it and confirmed waters gone at 11am. So now I have to wait until 11am tomorrow morning and if nothing has happened they will begin inducing me then. I asked about a scan to check this but as I had one less than two weeks ago it wasn't recommended. I did insist they do a blood test and swab for strep B. And also that I see a consultant to agree the plan. So I am home Now and waiting to see what happens overnight. But worse case is induced tomorrow morning. I'm now both nervous and excited. And grateful for the advice that gave me the strength to be bolshy firm this morning! I'll report back on delivery when she arrives. Xx

Flowers fingers crossed! Hope everything goes well.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 22/07/2016 20:26

Thanks for the update. Hope it all goes well.

Ilikegin · 22/07/2016 20:32

Is there another hospital you could go to? Just for the test hopefully theirs would not be the same batch!? I'm due in three weeks and reading this makes me nervous as its my first and if they don't listen to someone on their third why would they listen to someone on their first! Scary stuff! Hope you get sorted ASAP

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 22/07/2016 20:33

Go baby. You should have been induced after 24hrs. Even the rubbish hospital I went to had me induced just over this time.

Kick up a fuss if you need to

Ilikegin · 22/07/2016 20:34

Oh sorry OP didn't see your last post! Good luck Flowers

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 22/07/2016 20:36

And this is why I should read the thread first. Good luck with tomorrow. You won't shouldn't be let home after they have started induction so pack for a few days in actual hospital bag and also have a few days worth of stuff in the car for you. I had 5 days in hospital from my day of induction

BananaChew · 22/07/2016 20:37

Exciting update, hope you have your baby in your arms very soon!

Glad it's all sorted. Please do complain to PALS once you and baby are home and settled though; you shouldn't have had to be put at risk like that.

From what i read on Google, the test kits are just a PH test that will show a positive if the PH of the liquid is higher than 5 or so. I'm sure if they've been stored incorrectly that could skew the results.

TooTweeOrNotTooTwee · 22/07/2016 21:34

Pleased to hear about progress OP! Good luck and looking forward to seeing cuddly newborn photos WinkSmile

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/07/2016 10:10

Good luck

Cyrli · 24/07/2016 08:47

Has OP updated on another thread? I'm sure she's busy, but it would be nice to.hear that everything turned out ok in the end.

fizzingmum · 24/07/2016 14:07

After the longest induction ever, baby Florence was born at 9.22 this morning weighing 7lbs and 4oz. We are staying in for observation as my waters went so long before delivery! Confused the irony! But we are both fine and she is beautiful. Thanks for all the lovely comments and support. I know this is an Internet forum but your words translated into real life actions and really did help me. Emotional wreck still Grin
