Posting here for traffic as need some advice quickly. I'll try and keep it brief without drip feeding so please bare with me!
I'm 38+2 weeks. Last Tuesday my waters went whilst waking the dog. This is my
3rd child so I know what it was. As I got back to my car the gushing stopped and immediately my crippling sciatica went. As in just stopped suddenly. Baby had dropped and come off the nerve. I had a scan booked for 4.30 anyway to see if breach (she isn't) so I went home and cleaned up, changed underwear etc and headed off to hospital. When there they did a test (like a pregnancy test on a piece of paper in my vagina) to test for amniotic fluid. It came back negative to everyone's surprise. I didn't think much of it at the time but the midwife did comment that in the 6 months since the tests had been introduced she hadn't had a single positive. So they sent me home. I had mild contractions coming and going on Tuesday and Wednesday and nothing since.
Anyway I was due a sweep today with my usual midwife. I told her all the details about last week and she was shocked. Said that my hind waters had gone and should have been induced after 24 hours. Said she couldn't do a sweep and sent me straight to maternity day unit to get checked out. She talked about risk of infection being high as waters had gone and mentioned meningitis. I have been exposed to meningitis as I visited my friend on Tuesday and her newborn baby was diagnosed with it on Wednesday. I was Monitored in day unit and all Fine so they did the paper test for amniotic fluid. Again negative and 2 very surprised midwives. Then midwife says that she too has never had a positive in 6 months. So they proceed with the sweep and whilst I am on the bed my waters are literally filling the midwives hand. She can see and feel it coming from my cervix. So she happily repeats the test which comes back negative again. Now I'm no expert but I would say these are faulty or inaccurate tests. Seeing as for the last 6 months every woman passing through the doors thinking her waters have gone have been wrong. HmmGet chatting to some ladies in reception and two out of five are in same position. Waters have gone but they won't be believed as the test says not. So basically they have sent me home and I see a midwife next Wednesday for another sweep of nothing has happened. I asked for antibiotics as a precaution but can't have them as, my waters haven't gone! My midwife today was as frustrated as me but basically her hands are tied as despite her years of experience and eyewitness to the waters and me knowing myself, if that paper says no then that is that. So WWYD? I'm so worried about infection. My regular midwife said this morning I need to be firm and maybe I wasn't firm enough. It's been over a week since they first went and could be another week before I see anyone again. That's a long time of worrying. Does anyone else have experience of these tests? Do I just go back and insist on antibiotics as a minimum? For info baby is moving we'll and healthy in all aspects so it is just the risk of infection that is concern. Thanks if you got
This far!!

Hope all is going ok! Without wanting to sound dramatic I really hope you can get back up there first thing this morning and demand a second opinion. all of my babies were born prematurely due to PPROM and sadly the last one was critically ill when born die to infection - bearing in mind I was on antibiotics and 3 times a week blood test checking my infection markers. He was lucky I demanded a second opinion from the fetal medicine consultant.

Absolute worse case - take yourself to another hospital - present yourself as waters broken more than 24hrs ago and let them take care of you X

cherrytree63 · 21/07/2016 07:29

The unit I worked in used to have those tests, but they were like sanitary pads (you said the one you used went in your vagina).
They stopped using them as they were unreliable.

cherrytree63 · 21/07/2016 07:30

And agree with PP, in your position I would go to another hospital.

fizzingmum · 21/07/2016 07:55

Yes Cherry tree. It's a small strip of paper placed in the vagina for 1 minute timed. Then the paper is placed in a small capsule of fluid and wriggled around for a further minute to transfer the water from paper in to the fluid. Then a test stick is placed in the fluid for a further timed 5 minutes. If the stick gets two lines it is positive. If not your waters haven't gone and the water covering pants and the midwives hand and the bed.... Well that it's just my imagination! Hmm
Are hind waters any different in content to fore waters? Maybe what they are testing for isn't present in hind waters and only within the sac that baby is in and that's why they have had no positives in 6 months?
I've left a message for my midwife to call me urgently this morning and my other half has said he will take me to the next town if I need to. I'm worried as in the last week I have had sex twice and been swimming as I was told my waters hadn't gone. Now I know how wrong they were I am worried these things will have made it worse. I'm going to be much firmer today.

A hind water leak is less likely to cause infection ( from what I was told ) however I had to be very pushy with my consultant who sadly thinks she is God Hmm my scans showed a decrease of 11cm of fluid over a week and yet she tried to say it was my imagination Angry AFI can vary based on baby wee output and position but not 11cm ....

My hospital don't use that test because it's considered unreliable. Personally ( and I hate to admit this) I found the phrase " if you aren't taking this seriously I want you to write in my notes you accept full responsibility for any negative outcomes due to this" - this is what prompted a second opinion for me - and delivery - and literally just in time ( bearing in mind my waters went with dc4 very very early before viability so obv different )

flanjabelle · 21/07/2016 14:38

Oh goodness op. I would be turning up at the hospital and refusing to move.

I would repeatedly state that fluid from your vagina covered a midwifes hand and the bed. You had witnesses. I can't believe they are trusting a piece of paper over an experienced midwifes opinion.

JinRamen · 21/07/2016 14:46

I think you need to go to the a next town. Good luck - I hope they listen this time!

Anonymouses · 21/07/2016 14:55

Hope you have a healthy baby in your arms right now SadFlowers

BettyDraper1 · 21/07/2016 15:01

Sending you best wishes OP Flowers

londonmummy1966 · 21/07/2016 15:10

Hope all is going well - OP - I believe that Canestan now make an off the shelf test for thrush so might be worth a try - then at least you'll know they can't palm you off with that one....

pinkie1982 · 21/07/2016 15:11

My waters (both) went at 33+2. I went to hospital, was kept in for two nights, had 2 steroid injections, scans and discharged with antibiotics until 34w as they wouldn't induce until then.
People I knew were shocked too but apparently different maternity units have different policies,

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 21/07/2016 15:24

PPROM before 34 weeks is managed much as Pinkie said because it's generally safer for baby to be in than out till 34 weeks which is considered the tipping point - at term I would expect induction

fizzingmum · 21/07/2016 17:43

No baby and no call back from my message at 8 am this morning. Sad

OP contact PALS at your hospital, they're not just there for complaints after the event so to speak, they can help you get the treatment you need now. It's horrendous that you have to kick up a fuss just to get the treatment you should be getting anyway but getting PALS to back you up is more likely to get the outcome you need than just being persistent on your own behalf. I'm appalled the consultant is acting on the result of an obviously ineffective test rather than the MW's (and your own) knowledge and experience but the important thing is that you get what you need to keep you and baby safe so call PALS straight away and let them get on the consultants case for you. Let us know how you get on when you can Flowers

Garbadgeman · 21/07/2016 17:59

One other thing, I realise it's not your responsibility and shouldn't be your concern right now either but PALS involvement might just prompt an investigation into those tests and save this happening to other women too, the hospital will have to look into it if patients are officially complaining.

TheUnsullied · 21/07/2016 18:05

If the midwives' hands are tied, don't consent to that test. Pointedly ask them to use traditional methods to see if your waters have gone. Hopefully common sense will then prevail!

peneleope82 · 21/07/2016 18:11

I don't want to a scaremonger but please just go straight to the maternity unit and tell them you believe your waters have broken, you don't have confidence in the test and you want to be examined. They should be able to tell if your waters have broken by feeling. They should have at least swabbed you for Group B Strep.

Also google the NICE guidelines for 'rupture of membranes' and it will have useful information.

GloGirl · 21/07/2016 18:14

Go to the next town.

unimagmative13 · 21/07/2016 18:20

Surely they can feel them!?!!

I had a senior consultant swear blind she broke my waters. Nothing came out. Even the midwife was Hmm

I got the whole they are experienced shit.

They left me for 6 hours and I asked to be checked before they proceeded with syntocin. Low and be hold my waters we 'bulging' this was checked three times as my notes now said they had been broken 6 hours previous. They broken them and then I had to wait 6 more hours. I was LIVID!

Demand scream and shout - please!!

unimagmative13 · 21/07/2016 18:24

I've read some more posts, I had a bacterial infection too from all the examinations which I passed onto the baby. Please demand now!

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 21/07/2016 18:45

^ everything everyone else has said. Please don't put yourself and baby at risk - I know it can be difficult when you have a professional saying one thing ... But it's really important you insist on a senior consultant examining you and a proper care plan. If they insist on saying your waters are intact than they should be scanning you to confirm and reassure you all is ok

Masketti · 21/07/2016 18:51

I was induced after 24 hours of my waters breaking because of the risk of infection. I can't believe the variation in care between your Trust and mine. Can you pop to your antenatal unit tomorrow to speak to someone who will listen?

Boysnme · 21/07/2016 19:15

OP I hope you are ok Flowers

If you fee something is wrong with the care they are giving you please believe in your own instincts and go back and push to be seen / cared for as if your waters had broken. Mine went at 32 weeks and they didn't believe me and didn't want to see me. It was my second child so I knew fine well they had gone. When I got to hospital (went anyway) they agreed they had gone and gave me antibiotics. They then debated about how long to keep me for before inducing and agreed to get to 33 weeks. This was only a few days later and they got to that date and induced.

I've posted this not to make you panic but to just give you my experience. Please keep asking until you get someone who will listen.

Flouncy · 21/07/2016 19:18

Yet another vote for be polite but firm. Go back in asap. Don't take no for an answer and get seen by a consultant if needs be for logisitic go first thing tomorrow, its a Friday!

I don't want to be cynical but there are more senior staff around Monday-Friday and it's the day to make things happen. If you leave things another 24hrs you're possibly leaving any real action until Monday.

fizzingmum · 21/07/2016 22:07

Thanks everyone. I am seeing the day unit tomorrow at 9.40 and feel much more armed with this information. The strep B thing was a big worry. I hadn't heard of it until this week when it was on This Morning. With the power of mumsnet behind me I will be much stronger. Flowers for you all. I'll post again when I have been tomorrow. Xx
