We've done Charlie and the chocolate factory and the magic faraway tree - (she loved both) -what else would be good to try?

If they like the Magic Faraway Tree, you could try the Wishing Chair books as well.

Also the Moomins.

Dazedandconfused We read DD TLTWATW when she was four and she loved it. DH also read her The Hobbit but he had to simplify it a bit.

I think I also did Blyton at this age and I remember Those Dreadful Children being a big hit. Also The Secret Island but she may have been a little older by then.

I had forgotten the Sophie books but, yes, she did like those too.

I second the faraway tree and the wishing chair. Also my 4 year old loved the dragon master series, and currently enjoying how to train your dragon

My 3 year old seems to be enjoying the Hobbit ATM, though given that he has taken to carrying a Lego Shelob round with him I made the Mirkwood spiders naughty and had Bilbo give them a good telling off.

Roverandom is a good introduction to Tolkein for younger children. 6yo DS loved it and it's not scary like The Hobbit.

DS just getting into chapter books and we've done the Twits and George's Marvellous Medicine so far.
I'd like to get him a beautifully illustrated copy of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe next

My almost 4 yo loves the famous five and Secret Seven books. We've also read Roald Dahl Matilda, George's Marvellous Medicine, Esio Trot, Giraffe the Pelly and Me. We also read The Borrowers, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

If she is fully understanding the books you've already read to her, you could read the first Harry Potter.
Loads of excellent suggestions above.
Have you read books 2 & 3 in the Faraway Tree series?
There are loads of Rainbow Magic books, if you don't find them too hideously girly!

Both my dd and my ds loved the Barry Loser books. Very funny and lots of pictures. Hilarious, in fact.

When I read the thread title I instantly thought of The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse. It was read to me at that age and I was mesmerised by it.

I have not read anything other than the title so sorry if things have been mentioned.

My favourite childhood memories were my dad (who I didn't live with) reading me Matilda.

Even nearly 30 years later I remember how lovely it was esp now he's gone!

Pippi Longstocking

My Naughty Little Sister ( my daughters still love these and they are a lot older than 4!!)

We've done a lot of these (Faraway Tree, Wishing Chair, My Naughty Little Sister, Milly Molly Mandy, BFG, Adv. of Little Wooden Horse, Pippi Longstocking).

The Anna Hibiscus stories are lovely. She also enjoyed Tales of Olga da Polga and Clever Polly & the Stupid Wolf.

Famous five is next on our list...

Can I ask, when is old enough for chapter books? My dd is 2 and 8 months... And looking at all these lovely stories I can't wait! When is she likely to understand them?

There are four magic faraway books:
The Enchanted Wood, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Folk of the Faraway Tree and Up the Faraway Tree. Really imaginative stories with humour, a bit of danger etc. Loved reading them to mine. Each chapter the exact same number of pages, just the right length for bedtime.

The Tales of Olga da Polga by Michael bond is brilliant. There are more in the series if she likes it. The heroine is a guinea pig who likes telling stories.
