To worry about the safety of baby headbands?

A few women in my friendship group and/or with children in dd's class have had baby daughters recently, and have all been putting flowers and bows on their babies heads. They have all been bought from a local seller on FB I believe.

AIBU to worry that:

  1. They may not conform to safety standards and therefore pose a choking risk and
  1. It will be 30 degrees here by Monday, the poor little mites might overheat.

Headbands are similar too, but slightly larger than the ones shown.

I think they look worse on bald babies, not so bad on older babies but still a bit tacky.
I had a dd after an 8 yr gap with ds and even that wasn't enough to make me want to inflict on of these on her.
Anyway she's a right little tomboy and would have thrown it out the pram as soon as she was able toGrin

dentydown · 20/07/2016 14:18

I was given one, but I only used it for 5 minutes to take a quick photo and then took it off again. It's a bit of pointless clothing really. I don't like them myself, but DP and his family like girls to look like little princesses!

ppeatfruit · 20/07/2016 16:44

There's an old fashioned saying but relevant here IMO It is " Why gild a lily"?

TheresaMarie55 · 20/07/2016 17:03

I like them. I have two girls (both with loads of hair from birth) and both have worn them. They aren't tight at all (not the ones I've used) and I take them off for naps etc. Each to their own x

Tessabelle74 · 20/07/2016 18:04

Yep,dangerous and personally I hate them! Unless you have hair why do you need a hair band?www.kidspot.com.au/health/family-health/safety/beware-the-baby-headband

Winemamma · 20/07/2016 18:07

I don't mind the plain ish ones without the big flowers on, but I never put one on my DD as I think babies look cuter without them. Never really thought about them in relation to choking or over heating. I wouldn't think the latter was an issue though.

Love26life · 20/07/2016 18:08

I also think they look ridiculous and I always remember headbands giving me a headache after a while so i wouldn't put them on my girl until she's old enough to want them and can take them off!

PerspicaciaTick · 20/07/2016 18:20

I give you BABY WIGS

underneaththeash · 20/07/2016 18:26

I think they can look quite tasteful, but you have to have your child's name tattooed on your neck to really bring it off.

They're so tacky... but my girlfriend and I enjoy spotting the biggest ones on friends of friends on fb, screenshotting them to our whatsapp group for an amusing one upmanship game... (probs slightly uncouth!!!)...
Bought one as a joke for friends newborn girl but her 2.5yo big sister nsbbed it as she actually loved it and refused to give it up for several weeks.... 😂

BringBackBagpuss · 20/07/2016 18:44

Fear not, you can make your little girls as pretty and decorative as you like without worrying about the risks of overheating or strangulation

I was bought several of these as presents when my daughter was born just under a year ago, she has always refused to wear them... Don't blame her really!! I don't think they really pose a choking or overheating M risk, after all parents surely have eyes on their babies? But I feel like it's an attempt to confirm its a girl. My friends wee girl is about 15 months old and bald as a coot and wears one of these everywhere. My daughter has a decent amount of hair, she is a twin, her brother is a boy and people assume a lot that it's two boys, it doesn't really bother me, her twin and his older brother were never confused for girls, it's strange..

lalalemon · 20/07/2016 18:49

Surely they should have a sunhat on their head in this weather?!

EttaJ · 20/07/2016 18:50

underneath 😂 So funny . I agree , they are the huns usually too.

dodobookends · 20/07/2016 18:52

My dd would never have stood for any adornment like that on her head - it would have been off in milliseconds.

Flossiesmummy · 20/07/2016 18:56

It's the pointlessness of them that winds me up. A baby needs to be clean, fed and clothed. Trashy hairbands that are purely decorative serve no real purpose. When I see them being worn it makes me think that the parents quite enjoy having an accessory rather than a child.

imwithspud · 20/07/2016 18:57

I hate them personally, I think they're tacky and stupid.

TiggyOBE · 20/07/2016 19:00

They will end up with heads like egg timers.

And imagine what would happen if one gets caught in a lathe!

CatThiefKeith · 20/07/2016 19:04

Have all the posters that think they don't make a baby hot read Wherethefucks post regarding how hot they made her, an adult?

Mycraneisfixed · 20/07/2016 19:06

They're ridiculous.

Pawprintz · 20/07/2016 19:11

Let's face it - floral headbands on bald baby girls are unwise and rather naff. Just like pink tutus, baby clothes with dodgy slogans, pierced ears on infants and so on...

Needateenhandbook · 20/07/2016 19:16

They are horrific Grin. Poor kids!

MotherofPearl · 20/07/2016 19:19

Bagpuss, that is just plain wrong!
