To worry about the safety of baby headbands?

A few women in my friendship group and/or with children in dd's class have had baby daughters recently, and have all been putting flowers and bows on their babies heads. They have all been bought from a local seller on FB I believe.

AIBU to worry that:

  1. They may not conform to safety standards and therefore pose a choking risk and
  1. It will be 30 degrees here by Monday, the poor little mites might overheat.

Headbands are similar too, but slightly larger than the ones shown.

They are obviously hideous but as long as they are removed before naps I think ok, safety-wise

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 16/07/2016 12:46

I cannot for the life of me see how anyone could think these things enhance the appearance of their babies. They're totally hideous. What is the big deal about wanting people to know if the baby is a boy or a girl? It's almost as bad as piercing little girls' ears when they're only a few months old. Makes me shudder.

LucyInTheSkyWithDonuts · 16/07/2016 12:46

Id be worried about the choking/strangulation thing as well.

They also look bloody awful, why would you do that to a gorgeous baby???

CatThiefKeith · 16/07/2016 12:49

Apparently I am not completely unreasonable. Link

Wouldn't particularly worry about choking or overheating.

Would worry that people would think I had incredibly bad taste in baby accessories.

Wordsaremything · 16/07/2016 12:53

Hideous. And the headbands are tasteless and tacky too. Grin

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/07/2016 12:59

To me they're over-twee and frankly tacky.

Any self-respecting baby should rip those things off, pronto. And have a good scream while they're at it.

ImperialBlether · 16/07/2016 13:00

I'd be more concerned at my baby looking like a giant wrapped up Easter egg

WorraLiberty · 16/07/2016 13:10

I'd be more worried about someone tipping a watering can over their heads.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/07/2016 13:13

YABU about the overheating thing.

YAB less U about the choking thing, but I guess that depends on what kind of trim they have on them. Feathers and diamanté would be a no no, for e.g.
But then, I wouldn't have been caught dead putting one of those things on my baby if I'd had a girl. As it was, I only had boys.

They seem to be a bit of a "thing" in the area I live in - in fact, women who have girls are encouraged to put them on as soon as possible, before the babies have the ability to remove them, to "get them used to wearing them". Hmm Poor things!

amarmai · 16/07/2016 13:17

Being concerned about safety does not mean feeling smug . Why post that?

ConcreteUnderpants · 16/07/2016 13:31

I've thought about the strangulation risk before, but mostly object to them as IMO they are hideous, chavvy and just downright fugly.

Then again, I seem to be one of the rare/old-fashioned types who prefers my little babies in babygrows, not 'proper' clothes.

P1nkP0ppy · 16/07/2016 13:40

'Get used to wearing them'
The poor little sods can't reach them to rip them off if they're hurting/scratchy/itching/downright uncomfortable.
Of course that's all fine if it's 'fashion' 😨

Wordsaremything · 18/07/2016 22:00

What's the equivalent of this tasteless horror for a male infant? A scud missile model stuck jauntily behind the ear?

redexpat · 18/07/2016 22:08

They are fucking ridiculous and ugly.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 18/07/2016 22:11

My BIL always says "Why don't people just tattoo "I AM A GIRL" on their faces?"

They do seem a bit pointless. And they look constricting, like they're squashing the babies head. Not sure about the choking risk, those stoopid amber bracelet things worry me more.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/07/2016 22:17

I had a ridiculously hairy baby girl. Masses of hair. I remember going to a baby group and there were lots of bald babies (girls and boys). DD got lots of cooing for her hair. The next week, a few girls had these on. I attribute this to 'baby girl hair envy'.

I have to say that I made a few cracks about hot-gluing flowers to babies' heads. Because I'm mean.

SalemSaberhagen · 18/07/2016 22:19

It is nearly always the bald babies who wear these, isn't it?

DD had a thin, soft cotton one when she was about a year, but that was to keep her curly mop out of her eyes. Those giant flowers look horrid.

SalemSaberhagen · 18/07/2016 22:20

mrs baby girl hair envy is actually genuine isn't it? Also the mother of a DD who could have had a top knot at a week old.

applesvpears · 18/07/2016 22:22

I saw someone with a baby who looked about 7 months old with a beaded necklace on !

Badabingers · 18/07/2016 22:23

DD doesn't mind, isn't going to choke and won't overheat. YABU.

reallyanotherone · 18/07/2016 22:28

What about pp whose paediatrician told her they can damage the soft skull plates, and cause them to fuse incorrectly? That doesn't bother you?

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/07/2016 22:31

True Salem! DDs also grew out two tone and I had people ask me how I did it 🙄
