To have made a fuss over spilt coffee.

Sitting on bench on station platform. Have carefully placed full cup of coffee beside me. Train comes in. Lady beside me gets up, and as she does so her shoulder bag swings and hits my coffee, terminally. She's very apologetic and offers to get me another on the train. I'm very annoyed but say no, they only do nasty coffee on trains, it's fine, these things happen. She insists and says she'll bring me a coffee and asks for my carriage number, which I tell her.
Now I'm feeling bad because she was so nice about it and perhaps it was my fault for putting it down on the bench. Am I a snarky twat or does she owe me a coffee?

Erm .. You get free coffee in first class?! This is my first YABU.

(Also I imagine she would have noticed a small child appropriately sat on a bench as opposed to a cup on coffee inappropriately placed on a bench)

MadHattersWineParty · 13/07/2016 14:19

Presumably she would have been more aware of a child sitting there instead of a coffee cup OP! Unless it was a miniature pixie sized inanimate child Grin

A child isn't that comparable to a takeaway coffee cup, IMHO.

TheWitTank · 13/07/2016 14:20

She would have noticed the child. Child size/coffee size -very different.

Lorelei76 · 13/07/2016 14:20

er, coffee vs small child....you think it's easy to overlook a small child while seated on the bench? How small is this child?

Pinkheart5915 · 13/07/2016 14:21

You can't compare a coffee cup to a small child, umm one you notice one you probably don't

VioletBam · 13/07/2016 14:22

A bench IS a silly place for a drink. It's a shared space and not a surface for anything but bottoms. If it HAD been a small child then that would have been your fault...if a child had knocked the drink over I mean and perhaps burned itself.

FoggyBottom · 13/07/2016 14:22

I suspect she may have changed her mind when she realised I was sitting in First Class.

Well in First Class, you're generally given coffee and snacks in my experience, (unless you're travelling on a cut rate weekend ticket).

In those situations, I think it behoves us to be gracious and accept thankfully her offer of replacement. You put your coffee cup in a silly place, so she was kind to offer you a replacement & I expect she felt a bit bad, so it was a way of her feeling better about being a klutz. But next time what's wrong with putting it on the ground next to your feet, away from other people? Or holding it?

monkeywithacowface · 13/07/2016 14:22

Unless she's a rugby player I doubt she got up with enough force to topple a small child with her handbag. Come on OP you lost your nice coffee and only have yourself to blame!

EttaJ · 13/07/2016 14:23

Your fault entirely.
Yup to snarky twat.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 13/07/2016 14:27

A small child instead of a cup of coffee?

That would need to have been a very small child indeed.

MotherBluestocking · 13/07/2016 14:27
  1. It was a very big cup of coffee. And too hot to hold.
  2. The free coffee is just as vile as the paid-for coffee.
I shall go and read the paper now, but do feel free to carry on flaming amongst yourselves.

Hmm
Timetogrowup2016 · 13/07/2016 14:36

Mother -
You did ask...

Timetogrowup2016 · 13/07/2016 14:37

Btw Yabu

trafalgargal · 13/07/2016 14:38

I'm sitting here crying with laughter at the "what if it had been a small child comment". If anyone rings up to gets their broadband fixed this afternoon and gets someone who can't stop giggling...... I'm sorry but it's the OPs fault.

(I realise it wasn't that funny ....it's one of those comments that just really tickled my funny bone ).

And yes coffee in hand or on floor NOT on a seat ....be nice to her when she brings you a replacement

Pinkheart5915 · 13/07/2016 14:39

post in AIBU people say YABU and it's like oh I don't like this good bye Hmm

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 13/07/2016 14:43

I think she jumped on your dick over nothing to be honest. All you'd have got off me was an I'm sorry and that's it.
She knocked a coffee over, she didn't kill a puppy.

JudyCoolibar · 13/07/2016 14:43

Perhaps she's waiting till you get to a station so she can buy you some nice coffee?

trafalgargal · 13/07/2016 14:44

Or a small child

HermioneJeanGranger · 13/07/2016 14:45

Maybe she doesn't want to buy coffee for someone who was so rude to her over an ACCIDENT.

MyKingdomForBrie · 13/07/2016 14:46

Why are you getting arsy when you asked the question?! It's a bench not a bloody table, she's hardly going to be looking out for small spillable items on a bloody bench.

Pretty entitled of you to use the bench space for your cup in the first place, especially to put it to the side of you where others would sit. I think she was very nice about it. You need to unclench and think about where you put your things.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 13/07/2016 14:50

I would not be pleased with someone to spill my coffee and give me a small child in return.

alleypalley · 13/07/2016 14:50

YADBU. You left your coffee in a stupid place. All you would have got from me would be an apology, although if it had landed on the floor and splashed all over my feet I would be expecting an apology from you. I would not have been offering you a replacement coffee, and I certainly wouldn't get you one if you were sitting in first class so were getting free ones anyway.

StealthPolarBear · 13/07/2016 14:56

Lizzie carriage and seat numbers are shown on my reservation. It's the basis for the "someone sitting in my seat" threads

Lorelei76 · 13/07/2016 14:57

Chardonnay "I would not be pleased with someone to spill my coffee and give me a small child in return."

There's a comedy sketch that needs to be written asap! Grin

if the coffee's too hot to hold you get a sleeve thing or a napkin. Also even more stupid to leave it on a bench if it's that hot and could easily get knocked over and burn someone. (probably the small child that the woman just knocked flying, not)
