I live in a middle class area which is dominated by lecturers , gp s , social workers etc -my Dh fits into that catagory and I am an x that catagory .
It's a really pretty area and the kids roam between houses etc
Recently - I seem to be a little irritated by its predictability and 'niceness '- tho am aware it's a good area I really am .
I'm
Grumpy menopausal creature at present !
The paint work is mainly Farrell and ball, same kitchen appliances , similar dress code .etc . Whilst I too have Farrell n ball in one room and may therefore fit into the cliche myself (!) I'm becoming quite amused by it all in a way but don't know why .Part of me loves it part of me wants to say rude words and act up and be a Harridan !
Why do we follow these 'tribal 'things ? .the estate agent once reffered to the area as all lentil s and lintels . 😃

However we live in a 200 year old house, and F&B is a far better chemical composition to cover old walls as it allows them to still breathe

My builders and I had a long conversation about that. But as we'd had to replace some of the old plasterwork, and the whole place has insulation anywhere the builders could cram it in, we thought it was a bit unnecessary.

Marysunshine · 12/07/2016 21:22

Snobbery V inverted snobbery is all this is about

MaQueen · 12/07/2016 21:26

foggy we're going to have to have a new damp course put in as the old one has failed. I assume that will mean a lot of new plastering [sigh]

FoggyBottom · 12/07/2016 21:27

Working class people - ever get on your nerves - let's have a lighthearted dig and laugh at the things they do? Not sure how that would go down

Well, quite, Mrs Koala - if some of us started going on about the chavs, oh my, the abuse ...

MaQueen · 12/07/2016 21:32

Yes, exactly...

pollymere · 12/07/2016 21:41

We're not all like that. It sounds very pretentious and artificial. What we call Overheard in Waitrose or Organic Quinoa people. Life isn't about organic quinoa. I suspect you're living in a nice area because the people who live there thought it was one. I live in a decent area with a wide range of people. I live near a variety of outstanding schools, a fab Waitrose and an organic butchers. However, I also live near a Sainsburys, various other shops, loads of charity shops etc. What makes it great is the community, variety and serious lack of pretentious people. Maybe you need to move or find some non-plastic people to come around for non-organic coffee and doughnuts that are so wrong they're right. Remember the Witch in Into the Woods... " You're so NICE, you're not good, you're not bad, you're just NICE" break from the mould of nice! 😁

FoggyBottom · 12/07/2016 21:42

MaQueen I miss my builders. I practically lived with them for a lot of last year & I'm now trying to think of projects I can get them back to do. But they did the refurb job too well - everything works!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 12/07/2016 21:42

Oh I don't know. Have been thinking about this thread for a couple of hours and I just think it is the stratospheric levels of self satisfied smuggery that really annoys me about many middle class people.

Most of us are middle class or working class (with perhaps 5% either end being truly impoverished or aristocracy) and we just quietly get on with it.

FoggyBottom · 12/07/2016 21:44

stratospheric levels of self satisfied smuggery that really annoys me about many middle class people.

And you know what annoys me about the lower classes? Their narrow-minded snobbery.

But of course, to say something like that is to e classist or some such bosh.

Elsa3boys · 12/07/2016 21:45

I moved from farrow and ball middle class Bath to proper rural. I fee like a fish out of water!! I don't miss the pretentiousness of the white company brigade, but I do miss mums with brains on the school run.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 12/07/2016 21:48

Foggybottom - I don't know all that much about "the lower classes" and their prejudices, although you seem to think you do. I can only speak for the class I come from.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 12/07/2016 21:49

"I miss my builders"

What a pile of shite.

NameChanger22 · 12/07/2016 21:57

Does anyone want to swap with me?

In my street there's constant dog poo, a number of people who drink far too much, a strange guy who lives in the rubble of a disused factory and an old broken fridge that's been there for about a year. My area has character, it must be right for one of you? I kid you not.

I'm looking for an area full of lovely organic cafes which sell the latest artisan fads, arty people, pretty little boutiques and beautiful houses full of antiques and painted in Annie Sloan or F&B.

Please inbox me if you fancy it.

falange · 12/07/2016 22:12

I used to live in a fairly affluent area filled with those chattering classes who think they are superior to the rest of the world. I took great delight in being as common as possible (got the biggest satellite dish we could, lasted a day before it was reported, I drove a white flashy cheap car) I couldn't stand the smugness, still can't. Who on earth mentions the brand of paint when talking about decorating? How can anyone afford shutters? How?
But it must be said when they post on mumsnet they are are a source of endless amusement to me and my colleagues.

wigglybeezer · 12/07/2016 22:13

I live in a very posh ( by Scottish standards) village and my front door is painted Farrow and Ball " Pigeon", I too am a middle aged woman who feels a perverse desire to rebel against the locla MC modus operandi but I can tell you I have accidentally found the easiest way to cause a sharp intake of breath, having a child who comprehensively ballsed up his exams and ended up leaving school at sixteen and who is now in the process of joining the armed forces ( and not as an officer!). Honestly, people really don't know what to say, they only have scripts prepared for discussing uni choices!
I lived in East Dulwich 20 years ago when it was still a bit grotty, I remember the first coffee shop. I wish I hadn't pulled out of buying our landlords 3 bed terraced there ( we were given some poor legal advice), lord knows what it would be worth now?

FoggyBottom · 12/07/2016 22:33

Do you mean to be so rude, Bibbity?

GrandMarmoset · 12/07/2016 22:45

A good sense of the ridiculous and appreciation of the absurdity in life is a very healthy thing in my opinion. More fun if there's someone there who appreciates it too.;-)

BlackeyedSusan · 12/07/2016 23:02

I used to live in a middle class area (got even more middle class now) though both parents were definitely working class from council housing/tied housing etc.

I can just imagine the sort of area you are. Knew people like that. quite a few of the babies in creche ate at swmnbn scheduled time as it was very popular.

Luie54 · 13/07/2016 09:11

'Artisan'........that pisses me off. And snooting round waitrose with pristine hunter wellies.....I live in a very high 'tweed count' area, always have done.

Mynameisdominoharvey · 13/07/2016 09:22

Come to our highstreet; Greggs, charity shops and betting shops are all we have.
Don't forget the poundlands, McColls, and primark beardedladydragon
I'd swap in a heartbeat I live in a shit hole and have no idea what I have no idea what the fuck farrow and ball even is!! Grin

WindPowerRanger · 13/07/2016 09:36

I do get it though. it is the sameness and conformity, coupled with the tendency to cold shoulder people who are different, that grates, not the particular paint/food/car choices in question.

MissHooliesCardigan · 13/07/2016 09:48

bibbity There is a definite element of ED creep at the moment - have you seen all the roasteries, juice bars and artisan bread shops proliferating at the top of Rye Lane? However, it will be a long battle before the chicken shops, nail bars, hairdressers and pound shops admit defeat.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/07/2016 09:53

Smile no I never go to that end of Rye Lane!

I go to Peckham for the Lidl, Argos and Superdrug and occasionally the Clarks factory outlet! If I want artisan bread I've got plenty of choice closer to home Grin.

I want to move to Sydenham really but the plain truth of the matter is I cba to go through the monumental effort it involves.

EssentialHummus · 13/07/2016 10:30

have you seen all the roasteries, juice bars and artisan bread shops proliferating at the top of Rye Lane?

I'm giggling to myself a bit at this - I go into Peckham (from the Brox) every few weeks for Lidl and Burger King (classy, me), but there's apparently a whole new world on the other side of Rye Lane. Must visit!

MaQueen · 13/07/2016 10:51

foggy I know what you mean. When we moved here we spent 6 months renovating as the house is Georgian but hadn't been decorated since the Seventies Shock

DH still drinks and plays pool with our builders 9 years later Smile
