I live in a middle class area which is dominated by lecturers , gp s , social workers etc -my Dh fits into that catagory and I am an x that catagory .
It's a really pretty area and the kids roam between houses etc
Recently - I seem to be a little irritated by its predictability and 'niceness '- tho am aware it's a good area I really am .
I'm
Grumpy menopausal creature at present !
The paint work is mainly Farrell and ball, same kitchen appliances , similar dress code .etc . Whilst I too have Farrell n ball in one room and may therefore fit into the cliche myself (!) I'm becoming quite amused by it all in a way but don't know why .Part of me loves it part of me wants to say rude words and act up and be a Harridan !
Why do we follow these 'tribal 'things ? .the estate agent once reffered to the area as all lentil s and lintels . 😃

No takers? Figures...

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2016 09:33

I don't think I've ever come across a poster who made less sense than ailith. Which is ironic given how she's trying to assert her intellectual superiority all over us.

Having said that, I'm curious about what an S&G thread is.

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:37

Spelling and Grammar.

paxillin · 19/07/2016 09:37

Professionally, I am a lecturer at medical school, ailith. On mn, I am chatting using a phone as big as the palm of my hand. I can see that grammar is your thing, mine is medicine. I won't test you, that would be a bit pretentious.

I am not in awe at most teachers' education and intellect, they are usually ok. It tends to be what is expected of any university educated youngster. But I do marvel at their ability to educate children and their kindness, which is their job after all.

Check out the Pedants Corner unless they are too common for you Grin.

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:38

Clearly, you do not run to those.

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:40

I probably stopped making comma splice errors - if indeed I ever made them - when I was about 8 years old!

paxillin · 19/07/2016 09:40

Many mnetters, myself included, are not native speakers. English is my third language so grammar pedants can frankly fuck off. Unless in pedants' corner.

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:41

paxillin:

And? Are we meant to be hugely impressed given that you make such basic errors?

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2016 09:42

I can't think of anything more boring than debating on a S&G thread - and I have a PhD in English so forgive me if I'm not too worried about your judgement on my intellectual ability

But, each to his own and all that.

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:43

In addition, why do so many of you swear so much? It's not impressive.

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2016 09:43

I probably stopped making comma splice errors - if indeed I ever made them - when I was about 8 years old!

I'm sure your medal is in the post.

HandbagCrab · 19/07/2016 09:44

I've learned everything you need to know about umc/uc from Jilly Cooper bonkbusters, as have some of the posters on here by the sounds of it. Tes is for teachers, who are all, without exception, lefty communists with hairy toes.

I like the idea of mc as it seems fairly sheltered from certain aspects of life. However, all this angst about paint, boden, waitrose, Cornwall, schooling, the age of your home is so very dull. It seems to be proper mc something has to be worthy in some respect which inevitably adds expense or limits access. Sounds like hard work.

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:45

Why are some of you having to justify your existence by insisting we know what your occupation, qualifications etc. are?!
Hilarious!

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2016 09:46

Mumsnet is sweary. It's part of the character of the site.

Doesn't sound like you like it too much here ailith. It's not obligatory.

Kitty6 · 19/07/2016 09:46

I have worked for an aristocratic family as Curator for the last 10 yrs. I have to disagree with Doobigeta - they put massive value on education..yes the generation before are laughed at for not ever opening a book, but the family I have worked for and their friends have been very keen to get all their kids into good schools and through University.

They go on at great length about whether people are interesting. If someone is dull that is their worst criticism. Round where I live - suburbia - it is full of middle class aspirational, they value fitting in. They are extremely gossipy and curtain twitching! There are some traditional mc (uni educated, prof jobs) who really don't care what their next door neighbour is driving or who visited over the way at midnight...imo it is the aspirational mc's who are the worst, insecure, buying things like handbags for the label rather than quality, not educated...sorry I value it too...and jealous.

HandbagCrab:
Thank you for bringing this fascinating thread back on track. Smile

paxillin · 19/07/2016 09:48

Your ability to spot grammar errors (and give a shit about them) is really cool. 8 year old native speakers can do it as you say and you've mastered it, well done.

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:50

Kitty6:
Good post.

Of course this is the case but those who are trying rather pitifully to score points resort to stereotyping. The irony...

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:53

Paxillin:

Not all 8 year olds are able to do so. Obviously. All of the posters on this thread were 8 years old once and clearly they have not mastered the basic skill of correctly placing the full stop.

Kinda the point, don't you think? ( No pun intended!!)

ailith · 19/07/2016 09:54

Correction:
...some have not mastered...

I intend to stick around although I will not resort to the use of vulgar language! But hey, you carry on if you wish. Not everyone has to, however.

AppleSetsSail · 19/07/2016 10:20

I intend to stick around although I will not resort to the use of vulgar language! But hey, you carry on if you wish. Not everyone has to, however.

You've managed to avoid any spelling errors in this sentence, but surely you can see that you're not exactly an elegant writer. So why are you wandering around MN critiquing everyone's writing?

paxillin · 19/07/2016 10:36

English is an additional language for many mnetters. Third language for me, I learned it in my 20s. It is really nasty to pick at people's grammar.

ailith · 19/07/2016 10:55

ApplesSetSail:

Sentence? I make that three sentences, actually...

paxillin · 19/07/2016 10:59
