...to feel terrible for Reeva Steenkamp's parents as once again her murderer Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to far less than the mandatory minimum?

I've just watched the sentencing live. He was sentenced by the same judge who erred in the first case and caused it to be sent back for review. Supposedly the mandatory minimum for murder, the crime for which he was convicted, is fifteen years, however Judge Thokozile Masipa gave him...six. Six years for pumping four high-powered rounds through a bathroom door at a person whose identity he claimed not to know, a person who he knew had nowhere to hide from those rounds. To top it all off as Reeva Steenkamp's poor parents sat there they had to hear their daughter repeatedly referred to as "the deceased" without even the courtesy and dignity of her name.

I do hope there's a procedure for judicial recall in SA and this judge gets to go through it. So much blatant favouritism through both trials and sentencing phases, it makes me ill.

From my experience with you on other threads, Green, you may well be making these remarks without actually reading my posts!

I would ask you where exactly you think the proof it about Oscar killing Reeva knowing who she was but let's just not because I have babies to bath and you seem more interested in my state of mind than the strength of your 'case'. Which indicates intellectual confusion to me - or laziness, one or the other Wink

At the end of the day, it's irrelevant. You've indicated that you think the sentence should be longer because of the nature of the conviction. I see that point of view. We have failed to move each other a particle from our respective viewpoints. Again. And we'll never get those minutes back....

Now if you'll excuse me...

I've quoted your posts at length - it's how I pointed out all your factual errors.

The proof of "Oscar" (are you mates with him or something?) killing Reeva is that she was heard screaming before he did so.

Go on. i dare you to try and lay Roux's stupid timeline on me.

Yes, Apricot, also the stomach contents evidence did not fit with Oscar's story, nor did the expert police ballistics evidence. The neighbours evidence shouldn't have been disregarded just because the Defence asserted "Oscar screamed like a girl (oh, but like a man at the same time) Hmm What nonsense.

Also - damage to bedroom door, to the bathroom cupboards, duvet on the floor, a man so paranoid about security, but going to sleep with balcony doors open and a ladder against the wall, reeva's bag packed (because she was a very neat and tidy person) but her jeans on the floor, neighbours saying the lights were on, when Oscar said they were sleeping in darkness.

I thought this article from the Guardian was really interesting, and pretty much on the money. Not sure if it's been posted before.

This is good to hear.

Prosecutors are going to appeal for a longer sentence for him.

(p.s. it's a safe link. It's the Guardian. I speak as one who has clicked on something and got a virus!)

I just saw the same thingin the Telegraph. I am glad the sentence is being appealed.

""The sentence of six years imprisonment, in all the circumstances, is disproportionate to the crime of murder committed (and) shockingly too lenient," the National Prosecuting Authority said in a strongly worded statement.

The NPA said the sentence was "an injustice and has the potential to bring the administration of justice into disrepute",

Does the third trial go back to the same judge like number two trial did ?

AyeAmarok · 21/07/2016 13:53

If it goes back to that same judge for a third time I think SA will need to admit that its judicial system has absolutely no credibility whatsoever!

I have just read that there isgoing to be an appeal against his light sentence, despite reading yesterday that there would be an appeal at all.

C&p statement

THE NATIONAL PROSECUTING AUTHORITY'S FULL STATEMENT
The NPA has carefully considered the sentence handed to Mr Oscar Pistorius and has decided to file an application for leave to appeal in terms of section 316(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 against the sentence imposed by Honourable Judge Masipa in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, on July 6, 2016.
The papers will be filed today, July 21, 2016.
We respectfully submit that the sentence of six years imprisonment, in all the circumstances, is disproportionate to the crime of murder committed, in casu, that is to say, shockingly too lenient, and has accordingly resulted in an injustice and has the potential to bring the administration of justice into disrepute.
We hope that this appeal will also clarify further the principles of sentencing, particularly in crime categories for which there are prescribed minimum sentences ordained by legislation, notwithstanding the fact that a judicial officer has a discretion to deviate from the minimum sentence after considering compelling circumstances.

Surely they can't can they... I mean three times? It doesn't seem possible does it, but I was surprised at the second time TBH
