I don't. But my definition of middle class is those that go to work but don't need to.

OP posts:

Well Vag I suspect it's so that they can find a socially acceptable form of displaying their supposed superiority over those whom they consider their social/cultural/economic inferiors.

MistressPage · 03/07/2016 08:18

EllenDegenerate I did! In terms of the culture stuff, not the baby- in-Waitrose stuff, although I was listening to classical music at that age and indeed from much younger :)

MistressPage · 03/07/2016 08:19

Also I'm nowhere near as old as 42!!!

couldntlovethebearmore · 03/07/2016 08:26

I know a couple who are very preoccupied with coming across as middle class-they are almost becoming a caricature of themselves

EllenDegenerate · 03/07/2016 08:27

Irrespective of whether you did or not, most MC twenty two year olds are a Glastonbury drinking pints rather than dinner parties quaffing mojitos.

And I'm sorry but classical music/jazz is something your parents listened to, unless you studied A level music/played an instrument past Grade 5/ studied it at uni.

Your definition, whilst indeed charming a a somewhat whimsical is very person/ generation rather than class specific.

Squeegle · 03/07/2016 08:31

Thank you Massivestrumpet, that was interesting. I'd always thought that middle class was an educated class- people who learn in order to find a job where they're not just counting the hours until it's over. Take Ken Barlow in Coronation St, he was a classic boy from working class background who became "middle class".

KP86 · 03/07/2016 08:33

Haven't RTFT.

I work even though I don't have to.

And to be honest, I probably would put us as pretty close to middle class, but I don't see that as a bad thing.

splendide · 03/07/2016 08:34

Well by that definition my DH is middle class as he doesn't need to work because of my income. If I didn't work then we'd lose the house eventually I suppose so I'm not middle class. Seems a bit unfair

ifyoulikepinacolada · 03/07/2016 08:35

I'm privately educated, have a cocker spaniel and do a lot of yoga. I'm going to a farmers' market in a bit. I'm middle class by any reasonable definition I think but I work full time - I have no independent income and don't particularly want any!

MistressPage · 03/07/2016 08:41

EllenDegenerate you are funny! How do you know what music my parents listened to? You really mustn't make such sweeping generalisations about everyone's musical taste :) To each his own...

EllenDegenerate · 03/07/2016 08:45

Oh apologies MP but I thought that was the point of your original comment.
You made a sweeping generalisation, therefore inviting others, myself included, to counter with those of our own Wink

blueskyinmarch · 03/07/2016 08:47

Gosh Ellen what strange views about music choices.

My DD is 23 and she loves Jazz -she is going to a Jazz festival later this year.

I on the other hand am 53 and love loud rock music.

I don’t think age and music tastes have any bearing on what class you are.

MassiveStrumpet · 03/07/2016 08:53

Certain music genres are favoured by different classes. Metal appeals to lower middle class, from my observations (and based on a few studies of class or education and music preferences)

That God-awful club shit seems to boom out of a particular class of boy racer car.

And it's pretty obvious that listeners of Radio 3 are middle class. Classic FM lower middle class.

EllenDegenerate · 03/07/2016 08:54

As has been explained up thread bluesky MP and I were merely exchanging rather sweeping generalisations at her instigatio.
And whilst it was rather diverting I don't for a moment doubt that your DD adores jazz or that you're perfectly entitled to claim the title of aging rocker Smile

I actually agree that musical tastes have little to do with class. My FIL is a builder but he has Mozarts marriage of figaro on repeat in his van.
I've even heard his quasi falsetto rendition of 'voi che sapete '
(When he's in the back kitchen rolling a fag)

Purplemonkeydishwasherpimp · 03/07/2016 08:56

The whole "class" debate is a bit cringey.

TheNaze73 · 03/07/2016 08:59

I would never let the middle class darken my door. I'd maybe employ one as a butler though

MistressPage · 03/07/2016 09:00

EllenDegenerate chill out, I made a lighthearted post about what being middle class means to me. I've no desire to get into an argument with someone who appears to be a bit of a twerp so I'm trotting off to my coffee and Chopin now :)

EllenDegenerate · 03/07/2016 09:04

Good.

Perhaps you'll now stop tediously and incessantly explaining yourself.

SpiceLinerandHoneyLove · 03/07/2016 09:07

Lol @ Ken Barlow being middle class. He's not

BeautifulMaudOHara · 03/07/2016 09:12

Has anyone posted this yet?

www.ifs.org.uk/wheredoyoufitin/

We're elite according to that

BeautifulMaudOHara · 03/07/2016 09:14

Sorry, wrong link

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22000973

SpiceLinerandHoneyLove · 03/07/2016 09:16

9th decile according to that. Means zip

JennaRainbow · 03/07/2016 09:17

Ridiculous definition, not that we should care about class anymore obvs. Some of the poorest people I know are titled upper class.

LynetteScavo · 03/07/2016 09:21

Apparently I'm established middle class.

I do need to work, though. Grin

LynetteScavo · 03/07/2016 09:24

And I've met plenty of right wing middle class. You don't GDR to read The Guardian to be MC. Grin
