We are GB white lived in the area for 18 years.
No Ethnic minorities here.
Out walking the dog.
This child looked at us and taunted "you are Muslim."

Sounds like he intended the word to be perceived as an insult.

Back when we lived in Saudi, we were giving a lift to a little Palestinian boy (family friend's child) and he horrified everyone by opening the window and yelling 'JEW!' at a random door guard (who looked like just another Middle Eastern man). Again, clearly intended to be an epithet.

Scary times.

GabsAlot · 01/07/2016 14:40

its this for real?

either the kid misunderstands what muslim means-as they do with alot of words or youre winding us up

Iwillorderthefood · 01/07/2016 14:40

Armani that family does not sound very Christian to me.

If it was a taunt then yes this is shocking, if this is OP's reaction to being referred to as Muslim in a non confrontational way, then the OP should examine their own reaction and question it.

SymphonyofShadows · 01/07/2016 15:06

That was entirely unnecessary Symphony

The whole pearl-clutching OP was entirely unnecessary. You must live very charmed lives in these places of all you have to worry about is being called something you are not by a child.

concertplayer · 01/07/2016 16:17

I totally agree with those who said a Muslim can be any colour..
That is a fact of course. No no headscarf. In fact no one round here
wears one.
Someone must have put an idea into his young head that it is ok to speak
in this way about a religion. That is what I found pretty bad.

I think kids generally these days often lack respect
And it seems that parents don't actually really give them into trouble a lot of the time Things would be much better if they were taught respect!

LurkingHusband · 01/07/2016 16:45

I think in general it's shocking that an 11 year old would randomly insult an adult in the park.

Not if you grew up in the 1970s Sad. Overt racism is on the rise Sad

GabsAlot · 01/07/2016 16:58

how do u know how old he is?

PortiaCastis · 01/07/2016 17:03

I was called MILF earlier Angry

JessieMcJessie · 01/07/2016 17:41

But Lurking the boy and the OP are the same race, so in his head it was not a racist insult it was just a random insult. Not that it would have been fine if it was racist, of course. Also we are no longer in the 1970s.

hotdiggedy · 01/07/2016 17:59

so what did you say to him? the extreme christian family - was that in the UK??

amarmai · 01/07/2016 18:21

It was 2 boys around 7/8 and their parents were stood out on the lawn laughing and jeering as my dd and I walked past minding our own business. We were so taken aback we just kept on walking after staring at them in astonishment. Do some
Christian sects actually still believe in witches? It was in a large city in CAnada in. A middle class area.where we had been living for nearly 20years.What is the reason for your questions?Where do you stand on this type of behaviour?

hotdiggedy · 01/07/2016 18:43

I thought it sounded like something that would be more likely to happen in America than England since there are so many extreme Christian groups over there. Who are the ones that stand outside shouting abuse at passers by with placards and slogans on tshirts that Louis Theroux interviewed once. Where do I stand on this type of behaviour?? Where do you think?

Destinysdaughter · 01/07/2016 18:48

In the the eighties, I got called a 'paki' once. I was 13 and white but had long dark brown hair, in 2 pigtails. The teenage boy who did it was on his bike and only saw me from behind. Idiot!

laurenwiltxx · 01/07/2016 18:51

So?

Just5minswithDacre · 01/07/2016 18:53
Confused
KissMyArse · 01/07/2016 19:10

Who are the ones that stand outside shouting abuse at passers by with placards and slogans on tshirts

Westboro Baptist Church

OP - what did you say to the child who called you a Muslim? Did you challenge and try to educate him about why bigotry is unacceptable?

OldManJenkins · 01/07/2016 19:46

I would of asked them why they believe I was muslim and if i was what the issue would be.

amarmai · 01/07/2016 22:12

You have not said andiwillnot guess Canada also has these extreme sects, in fact out last PM Harper belonged to one !

mimishimmi · 01/07/2016 23:46

i thought PM Harper was Jewish? I used to get all sorts of insults for my dark hair, eyes and olive skin. I think might have said "salaam aleikum" to him Grin

thecook · 01/07/2016 23:53

SymponyofShadows

Bitchy and uncalled for.

The OP states she lives in an area where there are no ethnic minorities I lived in a town in South Yorkshire until I was 25. 0.0001 of the population were from an ethnic minority FACT.

StrangeLookingParasite · 01/07/2016 23:54

Muslims can be white, you know. Or any other colour. Calling someone a muslim isn't in itself an insult.

I don't think that's the issue here.

mumoseven · 02/07/2016 09:45

I walked down the street with my lovely ginger 4 yo, some passing 11 yo children said 'ew, a ginger'. I was fucking livid, stopped them and asked what the problem was.
They were shocked to be pulled up on it(I was calm and polite to them) and said sorry. I really don't think they'd thought it through

ItsBrexshit · 02/07/2016 10:12

My son has two European grandparents, he was racially abused at school this week. It's the first time it has happened. Being white British I found it shocking, probably because wasn't racially abused growing up. It is my first experience against my own flesh and blood. Friends at school had to deal with it and that made me angry but being on the receiving end still comes as a shock.
