If you met me and my DD, you'd probably think no ethnic minorities here either. Even though my DD is in fact a little mongrel, a mix of at least 5 nationalities.
I have a friend who is Peruvian and her husband is French, not of Arab origin. She is a Hare Krishna, he's a Muslim.
Your comment and that boy's comment are ridiculously symptomatic of the sad times we live in.

My son has two European grandparents, he was racially abused at school this week. It's the first time it has happened. Being white British I found it shocking, probably because wasn't racially abused growing up. It is my first experience against my own flesh and blood. Friends at school had to deal with it and that made me angry but being on the receiving end still comes as a shock.

I walked down the street with my lovely ginger 4 yo, some passing 11 yo children said 'ew, a ginger'. I was fucking livid, stopped them and asked what the problem was.
They were shocked to be pulled up on it(I was calm and polite to them) and said sorry. I really don't think they'd thought it through

Muslims can be white, you know. Or any other colour. Calling someone a muslim isn't in itself an insult.

I don't think that's the issue here.

SymponyofShadows

Bitchy and uncalled for.

The OP states she lives in an area where there are no ethnic minorities I lived in a town in South Yorkshire until I was 25. 0.0001 of the population were from an ethnic minority FACT.

i thought PM Harper was Jewish? I used to get all sorts of insults for my dark hair, eyes and olive skin. I think might have said "salaam aleikum" to him Grin

Who are the ones that stand outside shouting abuse at passers by with placards and slogans on tshirts

Westboro Baptist Church

OP - what did you say to the child who called you a Muslim? Did you challenge and try to educate him about why bigotry is unacceptable?

In the the eighties, I got called a 'paki' once. I was 13 and white but had long dark brown hair, in 2 pigtails. The teenage boy who did it was on his bike and only saw me from behind. Idiot!

I thought it sounded like something that would be more likely to happen in America than England since there are so many extreme Christian groups over there. Who are the ones that stand outside shouting abuse at passers by with placards and slogans on tshirts that Louis Theroux interviewed once. Where do I stand on this type of behaviour?? Where do you think?

It was 2 boys around 7/8 and their parents were stood out on the lawn laughing and jeering as my dd and I walked past minding our own business. We were so taken aback we just kept on walking after staring at them in astonishment. Do some
Christian sects actually still believe in witches? It was in a large city in CAnada in. A middle class area.where we had been living for nearly 20years.What is the reason for your questions?Where do you stand on this type of behaviour?

so what did you say to him? the extreme christian family - was that in the UK??

But Lurking the boy and the OP are the same race, so in his head it was not a racist insult it was just a random insult. Not that it would have been fine if it was racist, of course. Also we are no longer in the 1970s.

I think in general it's shocking that an 11 year old would randomly insult an adult in the park.

Not if you grew up in the 1970s Sad. Overt racism is on the rise Sad

I think kids generally these days often lack respect
And it seems that parents don't actually really give them into trouble a lot of the time Things would be much better if they were taught respect!

I totally agree with those who said a Muslim can be any colour..
That is a fact of course. No no headscarf. In fact no one round here
wears one.
Someone must have put an idea into his young head that it is ok to speak
in this way about a religion. That is what I found pretty bad.

That was entirely unnecessary Symphony

The whole pearl-clutching OP was entirely unnecessary. You must live very charmed lives in these places of all you have to worry about is being called something you are not by a child.

Iwillorderthefood · 01/07/2016 14:40

Armani that family does not sound very Christian to me.

If it was a taunt then yes this is shocking, if this is OP's reaction to being referred to as Muslim in a non confrontational way, then the OP should examine their own reaction and question it.

GabsAlot · 01/07/2016 14:40

its this for real?

either the kid misunderstands what muslim means-as they do with alot of words or youre winding us up
