AIBU to highlight this statement?*

Something the industry have known for while but the public just don't seem to get. We are at below 60% food security in the UK.

The U.K. Is unprepared to feed its own people

What a bloody scary statement, this isn't a BREXIT thread it's a "think local" thread. We have become so reliant on cheap imports, on retailers choosing what's best for us, never shouting British on products, so forgetful that our grumpy farmers are the only ones standing between us and starvation that this has quietly happened.

We are an island, the world is uncertain, God forbid there were war and blockades now. EU or non EU when will we start paying for food security?

*Sarah Boumphrey, global lead for economies & consumers at Euromonitor?

In defence of some supermarkets we're in contract with 2 that treat us v well. It's a new scheme where is the price of inputs goes up or down our price does too therefore reflecting a fair and consistent margin.

In the 3 years we've been doing it its taken away our boom and bust cycle.

So don't feel bad about going to Asda - they are improving.

WellErr If you hadn't said you were not in England I'd have thought you were my old neighbour. Smile

As for 60% food safe: yes, coffee, chocolate, rice, nuts, exotic fruit, many cheeses and a whole host of other foodstufs are in that missing 40% and a lot of food is exported.

So it isn't as simple as we couldn't feed ourelves, mainly we couldn't feed ourselves as well, with such variety!

And well, the source of much of that other food is, erm... non EU!!! So... as you were, keep buying your Kenyan coffee - and green beans! Smile

Ppeatfruit, that's very interesting about French supermarkets.
Booths does pretty well at local food too.

Interesting piece here about food security, from 2012 a non Euromonitor piece (point taken about bias!).

For those taking the mick DACC it explains the JIT system we run out food supplies on (just in time) and how we maintain a policy of no reserves so our backstop is just the food in the system at any given time, enough to feed the UK for ten days.

Also about not the EU systems are actually creating food shortfalls.
