If I say Mumsnet attracts a certain type of person?

Let me start of by saying that I've been on quite a few other forums and the opinion/views of them are a lot different/ diverse.

Things most MN members seem to agree on:

Ear piercing views

Schooling views

Baby showers (haven't actually come across a MNetter who hasn't labelled them grabby).

If I were to mention these subjects elsewhere, the comments would be a lot more diverse and lenient.

So, AIBU to say Mumsnet attracts a certain type of person (overall)?

Whether that's because of social class or personality, I can't decide. It's interesting to see what you all think Smile

And I think you only have to look at the wannabe middle class obsession with waitrose- it's a supermarket. Can you get more boring than that?

KeyserSophie · 30/06/2016 12:25

I think MN is mainly populated by well educated, socially liberal but not very rich people. It has major left leanings (their polls always come out to the left of the general populace) in line with that. MN'ers tend to be crunchier than average when it comes to parenting (no jars,
co-sleeping, no willy chopping, no ear piercing, no formula, cloth bums, baby wearing, etc). In real life most people I know are pretty relaxed about all that other than the willy chopping and ear piercing (but we just keep our mouths shut with our Jewish, American and Indian friends).

I do love the fact that on MN we had full on vaccine fights before they became cool. Now you cant move on FB for anti-vaccers and naturopaths getting taken down.

MrsKoala · 30/06/2016 12:55

I just don't agree. It's defo the uber wealthy who push the popularity of art along, and the mc who make it and buy it/consume it. As the mc are the auteurs it is their translations we often see. They control how we see our world.

SpiceLinerandHoneyLove · 30/06/2016 13:01

I think MN attracts some people who thinks using the forum makes them posh, the same way they think voting Tory makes them establishment and posh

HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 30/06/2016 13:08

I thought the majority of MN'ers were bored office workers, who want something more interesting than FB to spice up their days?

I think if you use it judiciously there is a lot of interesting debate and knowledge here, from a broad spectrum of people and views.

Dontyoulovecalpol · 30/06/2016 13:12

Do you think? Using an Internet forum is a bit common and low brow I'd say

Or is it that people thinking being on MN makes them middle class Because MN thinks of itself as a MC forum?

tootyflooty · 30/06/2016 13:13

I go on mumsnet when I am at work and it's quiet , not sure if that makes me typical, I have only started one thread several years ago to get some honest opinions, but mostly I enjoy reading the "banter", and if I have a strong opinion on something may leave a comment.

I go on mumsnet when I am at work and it's quiet , not sure if that makes me typical, I have only started one thread several years ago to get some honest opinions, but mostly I enjoy reading the "banter", and if I have a strong opinion or hopefully some friendly advice on something may leave a comment. I do find some of the comments can be rather harsh ( troll like!), in a way that you probably wouldn't speak to someone face to face, but if some impartial advice is required I can see why this forum fills a need.

1 Basic definition of theft.E+W. (1)A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and “thief” and “steal” shall be construed accordingly.

Stealing? Really?

Dontyoulovecalpol · 30/06/2016 14:25

Woods wrong thread!

poptothetop · 30/06/2016 14:48

Shopping in Next is MC? I always thought the MC lot had a sense for quality and not toot Grin

pop yes I am giving examples of things people have perceived as being MC to illustrate that there doesn't seem to be a concrete definition or markers of MC. I know Boden and Joules are often cited on here as being markers for the MC but I think nowadays they have become fairly mainstream.

I was in hospital once with ds and another mum complained about the "posh" canteen. I have been in it many times and it is anything but. When I enquired (thinking it must have gone upmarket) her idea of posh food was potato wedges!

HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 30/06/2016 15:04

isn't MC in Britain mainstream?

dolkapots · 30/06/2016 15:08

His I wouldn't say so, but then again my definition of MC might be different from yours.

MrsKoala · 30/06/2016 15:21

I think there are shades of MC aren't there? Like lower middle, middle middle and upper middle. There are also mc with different political leanings and social aspirations. So liberal wooly lefties living in Brighton growing their own veggies and eating vegan and riding bikes and fetishising anything foreign and home schooling, are as mc as Telegraph reading, living in T.Wells, waitrose shopping, land rover driving, Polarn o Pyret wearing and private schooling people. Altho different they are both still very mc in my eyes.

I wouldn't say Next is mc, altho i know people who would, who consider themselves mc, whereas i think they would come under the upper working class category.

Tanaqui · 30/06/2016 15:56

Yy MrsK- the middle class is vast, From the upper middle pony club, public school (maybe Tonbridge rather than Eton) second home in France or Scotland, down to the lower middle whose parents were working class but their DC got a degree, professional job, might still call themselves working class but their friends and colleagues probably wouldn't agree! Personally, I think the range of the MC is wider than that of any other.

DilysPrice · 30/06/2016 16:07

Absolutely MrsK. David Cameron claims, technically correctly, to be "middle class": he's not landed aristocracy, so he is "merely" Upper Middle Class. But the difference between him and the millions of people in the lower middle class is vast.

HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 30/06/2016 16:13

Well I'm foreign anyway - all this British class stuff is largely bollocks to me.

DollyBarton · 30/06/2016 16:17

YABU. I've come across so many people on mumsnetting who are living lives I cannot comprehend.

Plus I use a loo brush, I have several. And I don't wash my towels after every use.

minipie · 30/06/2016 16:39

I would say MN is, compared with the average:

left of centre
well educated
mostly better off, but with a significant proportion who are not
more likely to have disabilities or children with disabilities
fussy about spelling and grammar
foodie
led by official advice

WickedLazy · 30/06/2016 19:18

"Do you think? Using an Internet forum is a bit common and low brow I'd say" said no wc person, ever Grin

EastMidsMummy · 30/06/2016 22:03

I think Mumsnet is also more Scottish than average.
