Bonjour tout le monde! Smile

It seems that French music has often had a bit of bad press or mixed reviews on this side of the Channel Grin (perhaps Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin are slightly responsible for it with Je T'aime? Or maybe Vanessa Paradis??)

Anyway - I'd like to ask you all please whether you listen to French music, and if you do, who your favourite singers and groups are!

If you like any current musicians, it would be great to hear who you like!

I'm a huge fan of French music by French-speaking singers and groups, but always on the lookout for new recommendations.

At the moment, I really like the Belgian singer Stromae and the French singers Indila, Bénabar, Louane and Vincent Delerm.

I also like Baloji, who are a Belgian group, the French-Canadian singer Coeur de Pirate and the French rapper Soprano.

How about you all? Would be very keen to get some thoughts on who you're into Smile

I was trying to remember the name of Negresses Vert last week, so thank you to those that mentioned them.

Huldra · 29/06/2016 16:00

I had to exorcise A Plane Pour Moir from my head by repeating it whilst driving down the M4.

RangeTesKopeks · 29/06/2016 16:31

DramaAlpaca (great username btw!) I love Ça Plane Pour Moi!! Grin

I looked up the lyrics when I first heard it to try to make sense of it and I'm still none the wiser..! Hmm

The only bit I can sing along to is when he says: 'en quatre couleurs' and the 'paillasson' bit!

Merci, Range Grin

I have to admit I love it too. I'm not sure the lyrics make sense at all, tbh, but it's certainly a very persistent ear worm.

DieSchottin93 · 29/06/2016 16:51

YANBU, Stromae is bloody brilliant and I really love Dernière Danse by Indila Smile However my true love will always be German music Grin Grin

Kennington · 29/06/2016 16:54

I love the song song poetry style of some French music.I also love the over dramatic descriptions of love and heartbreak.
The 60s stuff like joe dessin are great too.

Opened this thread to specifically mention her. Have been listening non-stop for a couple of weeks now.

I really like MC Solaar, he's been around ages but still fantastic. Raps well, sounds good, and with a social conscience!

Huldra · 29/06/2016 18:17

Yes to Christine and the Queens.

Anyone got good German recs? I like Milky Chance. Anyone remember Einstürzende Neubauten? I saw them live in the late 80's or early 90's, that was a noisy gig.

Shizzlestix · 29/06/2016 19:39

Dunno if that will work. It's a Mylene Farmer epic cost over a million to make back in the day video. Pourvu qu'elles soient douces. Amazing.

Etienne Daho blast from the past!! Used to love him.

velourvoyageur · 29/06/2016 19:41

Love Daft Punk (& Roulé stuff, Le Knight Club, solo Thomas Bangalter), adore Cassius and Etienne de Crécy, SebastiAn, Breakbot, in fact pretty much anything Ed Banger or Kitsuné, Para One, Motorbass, The Supermen Lovers, DSL, Hocus Pocus, DJ Mehdi, Dmitri from Paris, Bob Sinclar, C2C, 20syl, MC Solaar, Benjamin Diamond, Alan Braxe, Fred Falke and of course the incomparable (pimples de goose)

Thread has moved on a bit but I don't like Indila because 1. I think she is a bit cheesy and meh and 2. My baby son loved Love Story and I was forced to listen to it on a loop with Vianney's Pas la for about six months.

So not really her fault, just horses for courses.

Can't believe I forgot Calogero and Shy'm.

BIL really likes Francois and the Atlas Mountains too, but I think that some of them are actually from Bristol. Smile
