to think a great job may not be worth a 50 min commute?

I started a new job in London a couple of months ago. The job is great, fantastic company, great office, awesome team, really good money (+60% compared to my last position), nice benefits. A dream job.

The only downside is that it takes me 50 mins to get there from where I live Sad

The commute is: 5 mins walk - 30 mins on tube with one change - 15 mins walk (the office is faaaar from the closest tube station).

I work ft Mon to Fri 9-6, regular hours. I am in my late 20s, own my place with DH (so I can't move) and I don't have DC yet.

I really dislike this commute. I love the job but I am starting to think it may not be worth it.

AIBU to doubt whether a great job is worth a 50 mins commute?

Op, you are being a bit precious tbh! I Swapped a 1h40 drive for a 1h40 cycle, train, tube, walk. I start work at 0800 though so tubes are quiet. I get loads of work done, listen to some I books, read the paper and so on. Plus the cycle and walk mean I never put weight on!

Could you start work a bit earlier so you miss the rush hour? 50min is nothing for a good job. Our minimum wage porters at work commute longer than that and do shifts.

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 21:10

I commute from Canary Wharf to the Souther bit of Chelsea. Closest tube stations are South Ken and Sloane Square.

A 50 minute commute in London is nothing. That's normal.

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 21:12

I think the suggestion to try to make the commute more enjoyable/ useful are spot on. I should really plan this better!

That is a bit of a pain TBH. Do you actually get on at Canary Wharf?

WanderingNotLost · 28/06/2016 21:16

Jeez, my commute used to be a half-hour walk to the train station, 40 min train to London (and that's when it wasn't delayed) 15 minutes on the tube and a 5 minute walk to work.

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 21:16

I walk 5 mins to Canary Wharf station, take the Jubilee line to Westminster, then change with the District/ Circle line and get off at Sloane Square and walk 15 mins. If the District/ Circle are down, I change at Green Park with the Piccadilly and get off at South Ken and walk 15 mins.

Both Jubilee and District/Circle are PACKED.

That is no commute at all. Mine is 20 min bike, 45 min train, 20 min tube.
And a toddler and a baby at each end.

EmpressTomatoKetchup · 28/06/2016 21:18

make positive use of the time cycle or walk for the excersize, listen to music, audio book, podcast, read a book, magazine, whatever.

If you hate the crowded trains could you try to go in earlier? Seriously, 50 mins is nothing. And pretty good for London.

Libitina · 28/06/2016 21:19

Is a pushbike or moped a viable alternative to the tube?

KayTee87 · 28/06/2016 21:20

That's really not a bad commute at all!! Mine is 35 minutes (Glasgow ) 5 minute walk, 20 minute crowded train journey standing most of the time, 10 minute walk and I've always thought its amazing (previously was 25 minute walk, 25 minute train journey, 10 minute walk). I've just finished work at 36 weeks pregnant and was fine doing that commute, just took a little bit longer towards the end as I got slower.
Unless you have a health issue this commute really shouldn't be draining, are you getting enough sleep and had your iron levels checked recently? My mum was finding walking draining and it turned out she had a very low iron count.

RiverTam · 28/06/2016 21:20

So Jubilee or Westmister, then Circle/District to Sloane Sq. No bus from SS? Can you cycle the journey?

I can imagine that's a pretty hideously crowded commute, if you don't get a seat at the very least at the start it's awful. It's why I never understand the appeal of living on the Northern line, all the Clapham stops are vilely overcrowded, give me trains any day of the week!

Summ3rW1nter · 28/06/2016 21:21

50 minute + commute to live and work in London is normal

50 minute + commute to live and work out of London is normal

I know people that do alot more than 50 minute daily commute !

EmpressTomatoKetchup · 28/06/2016 21:21

That's about 7 miles according to google. Personally, I would cycle that, might even be nice if you try and do most of it along the river.

Does a river boat thingy run along that way?

RiverTam · 28/06/2016 21:22

Sorry, very slow x post. There's fuck all you can do on a jam packed tube train. I'd move Grin.

could you cycle from Westminster to Sloane Square? Or green park could be nice. Earlier would be better though.

MrsLouisTomlinson · 28/06/2016 21:31

Fair play to you OP, in Lpndpm it might not be much, but anything more than my 15 minute commute in the frozen north would seem excessive to me. I'd hate to add hours onto my already stupidly long day.

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 21:31

you have to sacrifice style for comfort and element proof your outfit and change at work if you need to

Yes to this. Today I wore a lovely pair of red suede ballet flats and by the time I got home they were brown thanks to the pouring rain Sad

*london

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 28/06/2016 21:33

Is there any way you can take the river boat? Not sure if it goes far west enough, but it is a really relaxed way to commute, and stops at canary wharf.

The Jubilee line is ok I think, I guess you are switching to the district/ circle at Westminster, and that is a horrible line. Could you get off at Westminster and cycle (Boris bike) or run?

50 mins is pretty typical for London, but commuting can be draining and horrible, it depends how you weigh that up against the job.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/06/2016 21:34

I don't think you're bring unreasonable but then I wouldn't take a job that involved using the tube so I'm probably not the best person to ask!

zoobaby · 28/06/2016 21:35

Can you start and finish earlier? Or take a shorter lunch break? When I start earlier (on tube by 7:30ish) then it's really quite pleasant. Then as long as I'm out of work between 4:00-4:30 then the return trip is pretty good too. Getting a seat makes all the difference to your enjoyment/tolerance.

Destinysdaughter · 28/06/2016 21:36

Podcasts are your friend.

bertsdinner · 28/06/2016 21:37

I do a 90 min commute to get into Leeds, including two buses and 15 min walk. You get used to it, and if its a good job it will be worth it.
I like the morning commute, I zone out and just daydream/listen to music.
