To ask if it's embarassing to buy condoms

Me and DH were having a dissagreement about contraception. If I am buying condoms at the shop, he won't come with me as it's 'embarassing'. Aibu to think he should grow up? Its not like anyone cares....

Haha my DH is the complete opposite, he grew up in a house of women and no men, so has no problem calling me from the shop to bellow 'Hey, Tampax are on special offer, shall I get em in Supersize?!' Personal favourite - whilst shopping for DS no.2 who is due in 9 days - 'Don't forget the leaky tit pads!' AKA breast pads I believe... Sometimes a bit of subtlety wouldn't go amiss...

Polaroids, I had similar issues..
We were in Boots, Durex was reduced - considerably. Decided it was too much of a bargain price to not purchase but then the discounted price didn't go through at the till.
Cue the 17 (ish) year old male cashier having to tannoy for a supervisor, DH killing himself laughing, DD wondering what was taking so long and me just thinking something along the lines of - all I need now is a pupil and their parents to be in the queue behind me...

nothruroad · 28/06/2016 19:30

I have to admit I do check the tills carefully to make sure I won't be served by one of my pupils when I'm buying condoms. I'm quite brazen but that's a step too far for me.

Your DH need to grow up and get over his embarrassment.

I buy condoms (amongst many other things) online from Boots and then do click and collect (then all your items arrive in a box nearly sealed)

Polaroids I had a similar experience in superdrug years ago when I was about to go on holiday with my friend. We were both single so decided to buy condoms before we left. We stood for ages looking at the array debating if cheaper own brand ones were as good as durex. Spotted the 12 pack of durex were bogof so grabbed two packs and joined the queue...one till manned by a pleasant looking woman and the other by a young lad of about 19. Of course the lad shouts NEXT; he scanned them, winked at me and said 'Someone's planning a good night' I blurted out 'Oh no, nothing like that, we're going to Turkey for a fortnight'. Like that made it sound better Blush Blush Blush My friend was literally shaking with laughter Grin

I used to be fine with it until one time I went in a small local shop to get some and the creepy guy behind the counter winked and said "Someone's in for a fun night - naughty girl!" Confused

Never went myself again - on the plus side I really love my son so it worked out Grin

He is being pathetic, but then mine moans if I ask him to buy tampons. And then rings me while stood in front of them in the shop whispering "which ones? What? What's an applicator? Eh? Well what size? Super what?"
Men can be massively immature.

Pinkheart5915 · 28/06/2016 20:27

How is buying condoms embrassing, I do not understand. he could even order online or buy with a big food shop if he's that childish to buy them.

My DH has never had a problem buying when we used them, he's also brought pregnancy tests, breast pads, nipple cream, always pads and thrush medicine for me before.

StarryIllusion · 28/06/2016 21:59

I am firmly of the opinion that if you are not embarrassed to use it then you shouldn't be embarrassed to buy it. If I can walk up to the counter in Ann Summers at age 19 and ask what kind of batteries this vibrator takes then he as a grown man can buy a box of condoms. Ffs. Men are such children.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/06/2016 22:44

I'm reminded of when I was married and on holiday in France, where the condoms used to be much cheaper than at home. So since I did most of the shopping at this fairly small place, I'd buy a box of 10 most days to take back home with us

I didn't really notice the funny looks I was getting, but I certainly noticed them when I eventually took ex in with me and the till lady gazed upon him with something approaching awe. That's when the penny dropped that she thought we were using that many each day Blush

Vixyboo · 28/06/2016 22:45

When dp and I need them I buy them if he cooks that eve.

Win win.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 28/06/2016 22:49

Not condoms, but I used to buy Durex lube (no not for bum sex Angry ) with the Tesco shopping. DP would be mortified if he was with me and we had it in the basket, so I always ended up paying while he loitered around the sweets!

Once we were on holiday in Egypt and we ran out of it. The local shop had it on the shelf behind the till so we had to ask - no way I was asking but DP knew if he didn't get it he wouldn't get anything else that night either.

He pointed and mumbled and the young guy at the counter + two of his mates who were hanging around gave him a big back slap and cheered Blush Don't think he's ever been so embarrassed.

Use coconut oil now instead, which is handy as it can be used for moisturising and eating too, so not as embarrassing to buy!

VestalVirgin · 28/06/2016 22:56

I would be embarrassed by buying condoms, yes.

But then, I do not actually have any sex with men, so "too immature to buy condoms, too immature to have sex" does apply.

Also, I am not a man. I would expect that a male partner knows which brand and size of condom fits him best, so he would have to have bought some before I do.

It is childish to be embarrassed by buying condoms, and I fully intend to leave those feelings behind ... if I ever have reason to need condoms.

Changesofmind · 28/06/2016 23:18

Never bothered me TBH. It's a necessary part of life in the same way that I have to buy tampons, deodorant etc.
