To get really wound up by people who put letters after their name on Facebook!

Just what I said in my title really! For example 'Jabe Bloggs BSc hons' as their Facebook name.
I accept it's irrational that it winds me up so much but it seems odd. Are they showing off? Proud? Think it's just what people do when they've graduated? Or am I overthinking it?!

Exactly the same, HeadDreamer. I would rather just always be 'Margaret' (not my actual name), but I'd rather be Dr than Mrs Cavendish. I also hate it when students call me 'Miss Cavendish' - again, I'd much, much rather they call me Margaret, but I do note that I get 'Miss' and yet they often call male PhD students 'Mr Suchandsuch'.

MargaretCavendish · 28/06/2016 15:24

Wait, I messed up that last sentence so it made no sense in context. It should have read:

call male PhD students 'Dr Suchandsuch'.

123lekl · 28/06/2016 15:25

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking it's odd. Only 1 of my 'friends' does it (a recent addition) but when I noticed it on her account, I then typed BSc into the Facebook person search (just to torture myself!) and there's bloody tons of them!
And 'Jane proudmummy bloggs' too which is equally as nauseating.

Ask them if the BSC stands for Bronze Swimming Certificate (joke nicked from Red Dwarf!)

That's seriously pretentious. I have loads of friends with impressive postgrad achievements, and not one of them has letters after their name. I've never used BA, even in real life. Who even cares? Half the population has a degree now!

MargaretCavendish · 28/06/2016 15:29

Yes, my cousin changed her FB name first to 'Jane mummytobe Bloggs' and then to 'Jane Joesmummy Bloggs'. She also lists her occupation as 'proud mummy' and company as 'best job on earth!!!!!'.

It actually made me quite cross when Facebook started telling people that they couldn't have false names on FB - they were saying this to abuse survivors, transgender people, etc., but apparently they were happy to accept 'mummytobe' as a genuine middle name!

dingdongdigeridoo · 28/06/2016 15:30

Oh yeah, and I have a friend who is called Jane proud2bfulltimemummy Bloggs. Fucking hell. I'd forgotten about her because I unfollowed her due to the sheer amount of minion memes she was posting.

Hulababy · 28/06/2016 15:34

Never seen it, before or after names - I have a few who are Drs, etc but not on their FB pages. Some may have them on their professional social pages I guess.

If it is someone who has just graduated I think it is acceptable though - they'll be proud of what they've just achieved. But anyone else - would seem strange.

One of my Facebook friends lists ALL the letters after her name, her degrees and all her diplomas etc. I feel a bit embarrassed for her, really. It just makes me laugh. She's definitely not a recent graduate, she's the same age as me.

Bohemond · 28/06/2016 16:00

I had an acquaintance that put BA Cantab on her business card of her first job post graduation. Wrong in every way Grin

ImperialBlether · 28/06/2016 16:02

I'd be tempted to put my Bronze Survival award on there and my shorthand qualifications.

DrSeuss · 28/06/2016 16:04

My old boss signed letters with EVERY qualification he had, even the ones that were a minimum requirement and that even the most junior of us had. Pillock.

DavidPuddy · 28/06/2016 16:05

It's just people being proud of their achievements. Why begrudge it?

ImperialBlether · 28/06/2016 16:05

Where did she go to university, Bohemond? I know Cantab is for Cambridge, but isn't it MA Cantab, not BA?

alexandragimenez · 28/06/2016 16:10

I have never seen this either, I would definitely find it really weird, stupid and unnecessary but I wouldn't really care about it anyway, its their own facebook, their own life, they can write whatever they want to. Don't overthink it.

ChicRock · 28/06/2016 16:11

I don't have anyone on my Facebook that has done this, but if they did, and I noticed, I'd be tempted to write on their wall "Oh you have letters after your name? There We Are Then".

I have a very low tolerance for FB though and more than likely in reality I'd just quietly delete them for being a pretentious arse.

CountessOfStrathearn · 28/06/2016 16:15

imperial, if it is her first job post graduation, she won't have the MA yet, just the BA. You get after 3 years, assuming you've not gone to prison etc, and then get to come back for another party.

GeekyElspeth · 28/06/2016 16:17

Never seen this (thankfully...)

I did work with someone in my 20s who had brought the title "lady" online and used it on all her official paperwork including her work ID. She said she did it when drunk and now had to use it - no one believed her Hmm

Fuzzywuzzywasabear · 28/06/2016 16:19

I'm disappointed I can't find anyone when I searched only some seriously dubious profile pictures Confused

Blink1982 · 28/06/2016 16:22

off to go change mine.... may have graduated in 2010 Grin

Hassled · 28/06/2016 16:22

I have a friend who managed to get a credit card in the name Lady Jane Bloggs (she's no lady). I sort of wish I'd thought of it. She said there was a lot of deference and forelock tugging in restaurants etc (back when they actually looked at your card).

MrsJaxTeller · 28/06/2016 16:32

I deleted three people from my FB who use the MrsJoeBloggsMummyToBabyJoeBloggs and the Stay At Home Mummy at Best Job in the World brigade. Can't be arsed with that. I've never come across anyone who puts their degrees after their names on FB. That's just weird.

MurphysChild · 28/06/2016 16:53

One of DS's friends did this, but to be fair she had just graduated, and it stayed up for about six months.

DontDead0penlnside · 28/06/2016 16:57

I admin a local job vancancies page on FB. I have seen people with names like

Jane TitsOut Bloggs
Mary HunniPie Smith
Jim CrazyWanker Jones
Billy EllaMaesProudDaddy James

It's endless. And these people actually reply to local employers vacancy posts under these names (unsurprisingly it's usually a "intrested, info plz thnx hun xxx" type shit reply, so I guess they aren't really that interested in gainful employment).
