re: mother's reaction to list of baby names?

First of all, I know this has been done to death, so sorry!!
DH and I already have a Dd and have found out from our 20 week scan that we are having a DS this time
We both wrote our own separate lists of names we liked, swapped lists, crossed the ones off the we really didn't like and then put the remaining names together into one final list.
My DM looked at the list on Sunday, and had a less than enthusiastic reaction Hmm None of the names on the list are particularly "out there" or "yoounique" (think: Jacob, Rhys, Caleb).
She made it very clear that none of the names we liked were suitable, or "right" for her grandson Hmm
I said in the politest way possible, that it doesn't matter if my mother likes the name we choose, as long as DH and I like it. AIBU to think that I am right in saying that?!
DM seems to think I am being wholly unreasonable, and she should be able to have her say in the baby's name Confused

I'm always just a bit surprised people are so organised. We never found out the sex for any of our four and were always a bit taken by surprise. Babies were mostly about six weeks old before they were named. In the meantime they had daft nicknames, which tended to stick a bit.

corythatwas · 28/06/2016 13:47

If you are looking for decoy names, might I suggest Clottworthy for a boy and Dulcibella for a girl? Both genuine examples spotted on tombstones.

StarkintheSouth · 28/06/2016 13:52

We're refusing to tell ANYONE baby names until DD has arrived and we have fixed upon it. We gave our cat an unusual name (we got her from a Russian drug dealer who is besotted with cats to a crazy degree, and the story of how she came into her lives was a little unusual -so we gave her a Russian name!) The flak we got for that was enough and this was almost 5 years ago before we were even engaged. Right then and then we said when/if we have kids, we will not discuss names with anyone.
Seems to me your family is being rude and unreasonable. If you decide on a name you and DP love, go with it and I am sure you will be happy. BTW, my family now admit our cats name is great and suits her to a tee. Just goes to show you eh? Best of luck x

Tell your DM you have definitely decided to name your son Balonze. That will give her something to worry about until he pops out with a gorgeous name Grin

Congratulations Flowers

Caterina99 · 28/06/2016 16:21

decoy name is the way to go!

HighwayDragon1 · 28/06/2016 16:32

Pick the most polish name you can as a decoy Grin

HighwayDragon1 · 28/06/2016 16:35

lots of great names here

MyBreadIsEggy · 28/06/2016 16:40

I'll tell her his name is to be Eugeniusz Grin and see how she likes that!!

The funny thing is, there are a few Polish names on our list....but none that my mum would choose apparently Hmm

Oh god, never ever tell anyone name ideas for a baby. EVER. I told my friend my boy choice in error and she knee jerked with "bleurghhhhhhhh".

I just immediately thought "Tough shit tinsel tits; if this baby turns out to be a boy you'd better get on board" rant over

DerelictMyBalls · 28/06/2016 16:44

YANBU - don't tell her any more names if she is going to be so rude!

*disclaimer} I am 'a bit housing estate'

Lymmmummy · 28/06/2016 16:59

She has had her turn now it's yours - the names suggested sound innocent enough to me and not likely to disadvantage any child - like others have said you are letting her know for information it's not a starting point for a consultation on the matter

Of course you could be a bit mean and come out with a really outrageous silly name and say it's your favourite just to shock her😀 Then sure the prospect of a Rhys or Jacob would be very welcome .......

MrsJoeyMaynard · 28/06/2016 17:31

If her main worry is Polish names, you'd think she'd be delighted with Jacob, Rhys or Caleb. None of them are Polish, are they?
IIRC, Jacob and Caleb are both Old Testament names. And Rhys sounds Welsh to me, although I'm not sure if it actually is or not.

dotdotdotmustdash · 28/06/2016 17:37

Decoys: Boris or Nigel

Any other name would be a relief!

Welshmaenad · 28/06/2016 18:11

Rhys is Welsh. There have been several Welsh princes named Rhys. Though please don't use if if you're going to pronounce it 'Reece', only if you can say it the proper Welsh way Grin

MyBreadIsEggy · 28/06/2016 18:15

MrsJoey We are Polish, and it appears that my mum is expecting DS to have a Polish name.
We gave our Dd an English first name, but she has a Polish middle name....Mother wasn't impressed with that either! To this day she still calls my Dd Ewelina rather than her actual name (which is a similar sounding English name but that's not the point!)

MrsJoeyMaynard · 28/06/2016 18:21

Sorry OP, got that back to front!

Regardless, it's entirely up to you and your DH what name you pick.

Cubtrouble · 28/06/2016 18:28

What does "a bit housing estate" mean?

Did you mean a bit "council house" as in the misconception that people who live in council houses are chavs with stupid names for their kids???

I quite like Clarence

MyBreadIsEggy · 28/06/2016 18:37

Cub the poster who made the "a bit housing estate" comment left that little gem and then fucked off.....as goady fuckers tend to do on these kind of threads.

Sounds as if she has vetoed your Polish name choices as well as your English name choices - which makes me suspect she would say she didn't like any of your names whatever they were.
Not her baby not her choice - she's had her turn (I assume you and siblings if you have them have Polish names)

My cousins have one Polish name and one English name - to reflect their heritage (One of them has his middle name Polish, the other has first name Polish - but it's a name that is the same in both countries).

mouldycheesefan · 28/06/2016 18:40

I made the comment and I haven't fucked off. I stand by the comment. Just because a name is biblical doesn't elevate it and caleb as a surname I don't mind. But I do think Jacob is a far wiser choice. It is classless. Rhys and caleb are not.

LarrytheCucumber · 28/06/2016 18:40

Tell her you've decided on Percy.

MyBreadIsEggy · 28/06/2016 18:41

Kurri I think you could be right :/
Both myself and my sister have Polish first names and English middle names (my dad is British). My mum can be a bit of a control freak I guess Confused
