AIBU to fear Theresa May being dead set to be a PM

From what I've seen so far, she is biting like a shark for no.10 allready, while Johnston is reluctant at best to
take it on. I always had a nasty feeling she keeps Thatcher's photo in a silver frame on her nightstand. Even the possibility of her at the helm is blood freezing, IMO...

However, why should she? Whoever takes it on has got a terrible job ahead of them with not a lot of thanks to be had.

Because she's almost 60 now. Assume there isnt a snap GE. If she waits until 2020, and then Labour win, she'll probably never get to be PM as she'll be too old. If the Cons win in 2020, then whoever negotiated the shark infested waters of Brexit will stay on as leader. If she wants to be party leader, this is her chance

Bishybishybarnabee · 27/06/2016 07:35

Out of the likely contenders I'd pick May, the best one to negotiate us through this mess. Whether she'd particularly want to though is a different thought, she's had s very successful record to date, whoever takes on the leadership role is very unlikely to come out the other end looking good.

Floisme · 27/06/2016 07:47

Ok I'll admit it, the idea of Johnson having to clear up his own shit did briefly cheer me up a couple of days ago. But seriously, no. No, No, No, NO NO. If Boris takes the fall, he will take us all down with him.

It has to be May. Which means it won't be.

Floisme · 27/06/2016 07:48

Sorry for shouting.

AuntieStella · 27/06/2016 07:51

AIBU for 'fear' yes, that's the wrong word, and now politically loaded.

And end to all manifestations of any Project Fear would be a jolly good thing.

Not least because it doesn't have a track record of actually working.

Letseatgrandma · 27/06/2016 07:54

Gove would be even better in my opinion; he successfully took on the blob in education

In what way would you say Gove was successful in education?

JoJoSM2 · 27/06/2016 07:55

I pray that's it is May and not Johnson. She is a grown up and he's a liar and a farsical human being. She kind of kept quiet in the Brexit campaign but she made her views known - there's a few page document on her/conservative website. I encourage you to read it as it is factual and she supports her views with information. Whereas we all know that Boris has been spouting nonsense by the bucketful.

supersoftcuddlytoys · 27/06/2016 08:29

How do we feel about this though? Personally, I was appalled.

AIBU to fear Theresa May being dead set to be a PM
NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 27/06/2016 08:56

I would have said Gove was the most unpopular education Minster since Baker and possiably the most unsuccessful

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 27/06/2016 08:57

What, that she respected her host's customs? I take off my hat in church, and on the one occasion I was in a synagogue put on a kippah.

jay55 · 27/06/2016 09:13

I'd welcome her purely as she's not part of the boys club.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 27/06/2016 09:13

I'm struggling to see what's so appalling about supersofts picture.

Is it the religion she's visiting that's the problem?

That a woman is wearing a head scarf as a mark of respect? And you believe no woman should be made to cover her head by a man? (Might agree with you) but it is the tradition May is actually being very respectful, how can you want other cultures to respect our traditions if we don't respect theirs

TotalConfucius · 27/06/2016 09:19

I trust neither Johnson nor Gove. Both jovial cheeky chappies, if you like that sort of thing, but I wouldn't take them along to a meeting with my bank manager - likely they'd steal the pencils as some sort of jolly jape. Which it would appear they saw this whole referendum as.
With minor tweaks May could summon up some gravitas.
Not of course, the same gravitas, experience and demeanour that an elder statesman such as Major could, were we inclined to appoint a caretaker pm on a fixed term.

japanesegarden · 27/06/2016 09:22

My father, now dead, was a local Conservative party member back in the late 70s/early 80s, when Theresa May was just starting out on her career and was based in his constituency; he did quite a lot of mentoring of her then. He was an absolutely honest person of the sort who couldn't tell the smallest lie even if it would clearly be much better for everyone to do so, the sort of local political activist that everyone in local politics, even on other parties, respects, because they know they are genuinely doing what they believe to be right (he had his faults too!) He always thought very highly of May's character, knowing her well back before she was in a position of power - she was honest and hard-working and trustworthy and straightforward, in his view. If you compare what she was like in her early 20s with what the Bullingdon lot were doing at a similar age, I can't help feeling she comes out of it pretty well. Of course, I have no insider knowledge of what she's been doing for the last 30 years.

BarbarianMum · 27/06/2016 09:23

Ha, bloody, ha. Is he fuck. We are currently enjoying Act II "the reluctant hero being persuaded to save the country from the mess he has made ". Just like a dog who farts then turns round to see what the noise was.

Mysillydog · 27/06/2016 09:42

I'm hoping Theresa May will be on the ballot paper. She may be a little authoritarian but show me a Home Secretary that isn't. In terms of civil liberties she hasn't been as bad as many of her predecessors. I think Tories may go for her because she could unite the party in the way that Johnson would struggle to. Don't forget lots of Tories were for Remain and she was a remainer with sympathy for leave. The Tories may be a very divided party but they like winning elections.

I would like a similar uniting candidate for Labour if they can find one. My dh has pointed out to me that Chilcott is due to be published next week which may throw up uncomfortable questions for anyone who was serving under Blair.

LittleLionMansMummy · 27/06/2016 09:47

Just like a dog who farts then turns round to see what the noise was. Grin

Fuck sake supersoft. I'm agnostic but don't swear in church or blaspheme much. If anything it shows she has the ability to speak with people from many different backgrounds - exactly what is needed now.

In a professional capacity I've seen TM talk quite a few times and worked closely with her civil servants. She's very well respected. We don't need a slick, style over substance member of the old boys' club who can speak well but doesn't have the wherewithal to carry off the hard work. We need someone who can negotiate well and broker a deal. In that respect she's the best candidate by far.

I too am off to wash my mouth out, having never voted Conservative in my life.

HazelBite · 27/06/2016 09:49

Londoners voted remain because after having Boris for Mayor they didn't trust him, Gove takes absolutely no interest in any of the departments he has been given recently (doesn't listen to his civil servants) May is an unknown quantity she kept a very low profile throughout all of this, so who knows, it really is a bloody mess.

BaboonBottom · 27/06/2016 09:53

She's the only conservative i like.
She comes across as strong, well measured, calm, strong, knowledgable and unusually for a politician, trustworthy.
I like her. What she stands for, i haven't a clue. AS i said on another thread she reminds me of judi dench in bond.
It always amazes me that politicians jump from role to role. I would like to see someone whose worked in education running it, someone whose worked in the NHS running the health etc etc. The way they jump from role to role, really unsettles me.

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/06/2016 11:15

I'd rather her than any of the others ghouls on offer.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/06/2016 13:18

Gove? Gove was good at his job? As Education Minister?

Hahahahahahahaha

peachpudding · 27/06/2016 13:33

May for PM, then she can appoint Boris into a new post in charge of Brexit and he can take the blame if he messes up. Gove into the foreign office.

Then we dont need an election, party comes together and we can get on with article 50 and making the country a better place asap.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 27/06/2016 13:45

May does seem best of a bad bunch...

Glittershoes22 · 27/06/2016 13:49

I voted Bozza for London Mayor as he has character, I don't want that character for PM!!

I would definitely take May over Bozza but I was really impressed with Andrea Leadsom in the debates, calm, considered and not angry! She deserves a shot and I think she would do well.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 27/06/2016 14:03

I never ever though I would type these words.

I really miss David Cameron
