To be worried about going to EU on holiday because of Brexit?

Totally paranoid perhaps, but I'm worried that we are now the most hated nation in Europe and could have problems overseas. I realise that countries wouldn't want to damage their tourism, but equally I'm concerned that there will be many seriously disgruntled Europeans who may want to seek some form of retaliation. The way some of the Poles here have been treated in the last couple of days has been truly shocking and, I have to say (naive of me I know), totally unexpected. It makes me want to leave the country tbh but I know I won't be welcome anywhere else!

...the most hated nation in Europe...

Get a fucking grip.

Biscuit
TiggyD · 25/06/2016 21:22

Good question. Why not post it in the referendum section?

WaspsandBeesSting · 25/06/2016 21:22

Totally paranoid perhaps

You aren't kidding.

catbasilio · 25/06/2016 21:23

Apparently there are issues: here

Scottishthreeberry16 · 25/06/2016 21:23

'I really love my holidays in Europe but I worry that if the Europeans find their lives affected by decisions made here, we won't be the most welcome nationality!'

You do realise that you ARE in Europe, don't you ...?

Lottielo · 25/06/2016 21:23

In all fairness, you don't know which way I voted.

I appreciate all your replies. I'm sure it's the lack of sleep making me irrational! I've also been concerned about some of the racist comments directed at immigrants in this country in the last couple of days. Dh (EU migrant) has been told that he'll have to go 'home' now!

I can't imagine that hotel staff or waiters or shop keepers on the continent will give a shiny shit while you are spending your money there. I think some of the British have an over inflated sense of their own importance

This!

And also why would they be angry at us? We have lost an awful lot more than them!

Lottielo · 25/06/2016 21:24

Of course I realise we're in Europe...you know exactly what I meant.

Lottielo · 25/06/2016 21:26

So our decision will only damage our economy and not the other member states?

I live in Germany and have only encountered mild curiosity about my feelings on the referendum. Everyone wants to talk to me about football though (which I hate).

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/06/2016 21:31

So our decision will only damage our economy and not the other member states?

No we are damaging the rest of the EU, as well as ourselves. I think the majority of Europeans are rather amused and incredulous, however yes there is some irritation, the UK has always been a PITA in the EU, and it is continuing to be so with its refusal to invoke article 50 in a timely fashion.

You will be fine.

Quills · 25/06/2016 21:32

Seriously, what the hell do you think they're going to do to you?! It's the racist scum crawling out of the woodwork in this country now we need to worry about.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 25/06/2016 21:34

I think many Europeans would agree with the Brexit lot tbh. Have you ever talked politics with someone from Nice for example ? There is a lot of ridiculous naivety on Mumsnet at the moment Hmm
And yes you can still safely go on your holidays.

Mymakeup72 · 25/06/2016 21:35

Other than having to spend more money on your euros, it won't affect anything. You could always go to Turkey though if concerned !

BMW6 · 25/06/2016 21:37

OP - it is NOT 3 September 1939.

Rosa · 25/06/2016 21:40

Fine in my part of Italy, i have been the brunt of a few lighthearted jokes ...but the baker sold me my bread, the austrian on the beach near to me had a chat about it , I diddn't see anyone English in the restaurant being treated badly either... And I am in a holiday area right now..Totally OTT OP

Liiinoo · 25/06/2016 21:41

I wouldn't worry at all. 99% of the Europeans you meet won't give a s* either way and a lot of those who do will be approving. I was chatting to a German acquaintance yesterday and he reckons it is just a matter of time before Germany calls its own referendum.

Brits holidayed in Europe long before the EU and our money will still be welcome after the divorce.

Lottielo · 25/06/2016 21:45

I was just worried about general dislike/rudeness, I didn't think they'd attack me! I'm a sensitive soul, so would find it hurtful!

I am extremely worried about the racism here, especially with Dh being an EU migrant, although he finds it quite amusing when people tell him to go home!

OP posts:
RepentAtLeisure · 25/06/2016 21:45

I'm not sure we're hated. From what I've seen online 'pitied' would be the more accurate term. Also 'worldwide laughing stock'.

bertsdinner · 25/06/2016 21:48

I wouldnt worry, I doubt they'll care less, and a lot of other Europeans are also disgruntled with the EU (as I found in Greece recently). Maybe take Euros though in case there are problems with exchanging money (as reported happening in Kos).

Cherryguitar · 25/06/2016 21:50

"many seriously disgruntled Europeans who may want to seek some form of retaliation."

This made me laugh. I don't think anyone is interested in the English abroad. They were never very much liked to begin with.

Lottielo · 25/06/2016 21:52

Thirty years ago, Dsis and I went to a restaurant in Holland and a big chunk of broken glass was placed in both our plates food (so there was no chance of actually eating it by accident). Turned out that because we were both blond haired, the staff said that they presumed we were German. When they found out we are English, they were unbelievably apologetic and it was free food and drinks all round and much talk about how much they love the English. So I suppose that incident long ago perhaps led to my paranoia!

OP posts:
goddessofsmallthings · 25/06/2016 22:25

I've also been mistaken for German when in Europe.

The UK is by no means the "most hated" country in Europe and Brexit won't change that fact; in some countries we'll be applauded as heroes because we've led the way out and they'll follow suit.
